They can't even make international credit cards work with their billing system.

Unknown, I have not lived in the United Arab Emirates for over 2 years, and since going to work for an information security company I have pretty dropped almost everything communications related. Info. Sec. demands a massive amount of my time - pod casts, white papers, info sec. blogs / mailing lists and SANS. I probably spend 8 to 10 hours a week alone on keeping up with what is transpiring in the security landscape, and what I need to be on the look out for.
Google results seems to stagnate post 2007, which does not sound promising.

Yes, but then I will need a Twitter account, plus will have to send all my
updates to a UK number, as you mentioned. That will turn out to be expensive in
the long run.

Apparently there are only 5000 Twitter users in the Middle East compared to 1
million Facebook users. Didn't think doing something with Twitter was worth my
time, especially because I was thinking only local users would find the app
interesting.

I could have(still can) setup the application to SMS users their friends' status
updates, but then that will cost me money to send outbound text messages and I
will have to make this a paid service, which I didn't think was a good idea.
Thanks for the feedback,

You could achieve this with Twitter years ago. Twitter will accept "tweets" from your mobile via sms - It's an international SMS so your solution may be cheaper if you're using a local destination number.
So with the Twitter solution what you once your sms's are becoming tweets is link your Facebook status to your twitter tweets and you're "social-networking" on two platforms, not just one, via SMS.
What would be great is a service where you can select one or two key Facebook or Twitter contacts and have their status sms'ed to you phone - This is something that Twitter already doesn't but isn't available on Etisalat / Du.
Thanks for the app' though ...

I know there are a lot of apps that does the same job IF you have a smartphone with a data plan but I wanted something that worked without a data plan. The official Facebook Text Messages only works in a few countries with selected operators(only Du supported in the UAE). SmsMyStatus will work in all the countries, using any mobile networks.

For the curious, I built the whole thing using Gammu: http://wammu.eu/gammu/.
Before you ask the question - Yes the app and the service is free, you obviously
have to pay your mobile operator for every SMS you send.
Give it a try when you get some free time and let me know if you have any

Wow. I knew that Etisalat required that they should be able to tap / listen into any VOIP Based PABX chatter but I had no idea they had decided to listen in on emails and SMSes as well. Sadness. Dan

Spyware In BlackBerry Updates For Users in the UAE

"An update pushed out to BlackBerry users on the Etisalat network in

crippling battery life. Sent out as a WAP Push message, the update
installs a Java file that one curious customer decided to take a

battery drain."
Addition it is very slow when connected to network. Without connecting to network it is very fast.

Hi to all,
I have a problem with OpenOffice 3.0. It is very slow in opening files. I was using Staroffice 6.0, Openoffice 2.4 with Win98 and speed of openining files was okay/faster. Ever since I have put Xp with 1GB RAM and now Intel Core2 Quad processor with 4GB RAM it takes considerably longer time to open file(25 to 30secs). Majority of my files which was created in Staroffice 6.0 version.

Aamir. The higher colleges of technologies (at least 4 years ago)
also run Linux on the desktop in some of their labs, and were at the
time quite pleased with the results and were going to expand this to a
wider range of people. However it has been 4 years and I no longer
work for Novell, so cannot go check either :)

Your effort to bring in Open Source into school is quite appreciative. There are few school in Sharjah which uses Linux as desktop , not all but around 50% of total PC are installed with Linux. The IT staff tired out with it first and then they installed at the lab, This was about 6 months back . What I have heard from them is that they do have plans to use Linux for their PBX and CCTV
Another school which name I forgot , They had implemented Linux for their academic purpose , If I am not correct Network Gulf had implemented it
Hope to hear from you more about the Linux implementation Thanks

From: Aamir Sajwani <aamir.sajwani@...> Subject: [dubailug] Hello, and Linux at The Westminster School! To: dubailug@yahoogroups.com Date: Friday, 8 May, 2009, 3:46 AM
Hello, everyone.
I'm Aamir Sajwani, 19 year old Linux user who's been hooked to Linux ever since I tried out zipslack all those years ago. I'm glad I finally found a LUG in the UAE, and I think that serves as purposeful, brief introduction.
For rather useful reading purposes, I'd like to state that it may be likely that Ubuntu may be used in a computer lab or two at The Westminster School next school year, as part of my initiative for improved computer security. I approached the Principal of the school with evidence that I'd been able to retrieve the facebook usernames and passwords of at least 70 students merely by placing a 10 year old keylogger on one of the machines, which spread rather virulently, considering the number of USB memory sticks and data transferred between computers. He was quite concerned about the situation, despite the fact that all computers have Sophos antivirus (lol, sophos) with the latest updates and virus definitions, and yet it could not detect the keylogger.
He said he's quite open to the idea of trying out Linux, and was especially pleased to know that it's completely free. Hopefully we'll be seeing Ubuntu in a computer lab as a test run next year. If this goes ahead, would this be the first time a school in the UAE is utilising Linux on the student level? If so, I'd feel rather happy and proud about that :D
I think that's enough for now, looking forward to hear from you soon!
