Subject: Setup networking on the Mac to communicate with Dugan Model-E and E1
bbiengineering
Send Email Send Email

Just want to point out for the Mac users that you don't really need to reconfigure your Mac's primary Ethernet IP address to be in the same subnet as the Model-E/E1. You may create a secondary ethernet device. In your network preference window, click the "+" button to add another network device. When prompted, set the interface to Ethernet, and you may leave the service name as it suggested or call it Dugan Model-E. Once a new device is created, set the "Configure IPV4" to manual and set the IP address and subnet mask to match the Model-E/E1 subnet. For example, the latest Model-E1 firmware factory preset the IP to 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. You may then set your secondary ethernet device on the Mac with IP 192.168.1.123 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Your Mac will now work with the Model-E/E1 and being able to browse the internet at the same time (assuming that you connect the MAC, the Model-E/E1 and your internet access to an ethernet hub/switch). This setup works even if your primary ethernet device is set to use DHCP, provided your DHCP server is not giving out IP addresses in the same subnet as the Model-E/E1.

Similar setup can be done for the PC running Windows OSs. But the primary ethernet device cannot be in DHCP mode.

What are the 2 consoles used in the picture? Yamaha "something" on the left and

Denny is correct, it's an M7 (I know, how did I talk you into that?) and a DDA
CS-8. Based on the Illy cup in the photo I'm 99% sure this is that gig we did at
the Madarin for an international accounting a consulting firm, not one of those
for the international sprits firm. I also recall Pete being shocked at the
flatness of his RF analyser when all the mics were shut off.

Bill

Bill is absolutely right, as is Denny - I was so tied up in the beverage gig over the past few years, that I did not look closely at the photo. Thanks for reminding me that we 'prototyped' that multi-Dugan E setup in DC and Thanks, Bill for your support on that one. It had its challenges...
I should have remembered the Illy; the Mandarin is a nice venue - the sushi is outstanding as is the case at most Mandarins. I do remember Colin Powell presenting on stage in his socks, shoe-less. Another story for another time.

Yes Dan, I have to agree.

I find that when mixing panels with numerous participants on lavs, that once the
gains and everything are set, I often am riding the weight controls and maybe
mutes. This is because good speakers don't speak in one continuous monotone
voice, the 20 others on stage are also making some noise on their mics while the
current speaker is speaking, somebody elses's mic falls off, someone else is
getting a drink of water, all in the middle of a bit of dialog that may tend to
get quiet and delicate. Being able to keep a finger on the weight control helps,
and having quick access to mutes too, but then you also have to be able to
restore all that was done when the next speaker chimes in. Software controls
operated via mouse or paged access just don't lend themselves to be nearly as
quick for accurate reacting as a complete set of dedicated controls via control
panels.

Thanks for reaching out for our feedback, Dan!

I would agree that the music system is not the reason we use the D2.
In fact, I've never used the music system :(

If control of the D4 were to be limited to iPad or iPhone, that might be a bit
challenging for those of us that don't have those devices.
So I wonder if it would be possible/practical to include computer (ethernet?)
interface as well as iOS interface?

For what it's worth, I recently did an informal survey of Dugan E users and
found that almost no one actually connects an external control to it. They just
assume it's set at default settings (or reset to them) and go!

Thanks again!

Very few ever have. Years ago I added the D-1 as my second product, it was (is)
a Model D with just the speech system for a lower price. I figured it would
succeed the Model D. I was surprised that people still wanted to buy Model Ds,
even though then didn't actually use the extra features.

All my new mixers will have web control panels in addition to iOS control
panels. I'm going to reconfigure my whole product line this year, stay tuned.

I'm not at all surprised. I had a session with my manual writer yesterday, and
we decided that the "quickstart" for the Dugan-MY16 (Yamaha card, coming soon!)
shouldn't include getting the remote interface up--just patch post-fader and go.
Different Yamaha mixers address their screen differently, so we can't have
operation using their screen. The Dugan-MY16 has ethernet in the back and web
control + iOS control. We will have a live demo at the NAB.

Dan,

So great that this discussion is happening.

For the years that I was mostly mixing on an analog desk, just about the only controls I used were the bypass to bring channels in and out as people entered or left the stage (assuming all the same mic types).  Now that I use more digital desks I move the insert point to be post fader and I dont even have to use the bypass anymore.  If I have a Dugan E I just go with "out of the box" settings and I am fine.  I dont even need to have the units within reach.

Having said that, I think that it would be nice to have more than one platform available for a non PC interface.  Android?

Thanks again for starting this dialog.  I wish more designer and manufacturers would do this.

I have a user reporting "When using in analog mode, high pitched artifacts in the audio, and were getting level readings on the mixers at -40dB with all 8 inserts plugged in, even though the trims were down on the console and were not feeding the channels with any audio" when using a Model-E1 with several Midas and a Crest mixer. I received the unit back and found no problem with the Model-E1, channel cross-talk was less than -100dB and noise floor was clean.

I'm wondering if anybody tried using the Mode-E1 with Midas consoles and would like to share their experience.

Dear Colleagues,

The first batch of Dugan-MY16 cards will be shipped next week! I don't know how
long it will take them to get through Yamaha's distribution system.

We've been sold out of E-1s for a few weeks. The new batch is being assembled
now, and we hope to start clearing the backlog of orders mid-September.

I have four talks (two each day) scheduled at Yamaha's Audioversity
<http://www.audioversityexpo.com/> in Las Vegas next week.

I'll be in booth 641 at the AES show in New York, October 21-23.

Hi,

Just signed up for this group. I have it in my budget this year to purchase a
MY-16 for my M7CL/32. I have not used the Dugan stand alone units before, but I
am really excited for this addition to our system.

I looked at the User's Guide and it indicates that the MY-16 should set to
Manual for singing and that there is no functional difference between Manual and
Bypass.

This unit will be very useful for our speech applications such as panel
discussions and conferences, but I just want to confirm that the functionality
is not designed for Musical Theater.

Welcome to the list. Traffic has been very light, but with the addition of the
Dugan-MY16 I suspect there will be more action.

That's right. The Dugan Control Panel controls all connectable Dugans, and those
with Analog I/O (currently E and E-1) have hard-wire bypass relays. So with
those models the buttons do different things.

The Dugan Speech System algorithm increases the separation between mics. That's
the opposite of what you want to do when people or instruments are performing
together. Currently the Model D-2 and the discontinued but soon to be replaced
Model D-3 have the Dugan Music System.

The Speech System will work nicely for the dialogue parts of a musical and
solos, but switch to manual if more than one person is singing.

Just a reminder that the current firmware updater that's in the Files area of
this Yahoo list site, and in the Downloads area of dandugan.com, will update all
computer-connectable Dugan models. You won't see files specific to the E, E-1,
or Dugan-MY16 any more.

When you launch the updater Java app (just double-click on the .jar file),
shortly you will see a list of connected units. Click on one to highlight it. If
the "update firmware" button is grayed out, you have the current firmware. Also
in the package is a .txt file that lists the current firmware versions for all
models.

The new Dugan Control Panel is a stand-alone Java app, and will run all models
(together, if you want). No browser needed, just double-click on the control
panel app.

Dan,

I just received my MY16 card yesterday and I'm going to take it on it's maiden
voyage tomorrow. Woohoo!

Just to be clear, the USB port on the motherboard of the card is not necessary
for any user side upgrading or programming, right? Any firmware upgrading is
done as it is on the E-1 where you access via LAN and the control panel,
correct? Just want to make sure I don't have to do any upgrades before I
install it in the console.

Many thanks for your great products; they have covered my @$$ for years!

The USB port is for factory testing only. You run the control panel and the firmware updating from the network connection. There may be newer firmware than your card has. Download the most recent files from the user group site or http://www.dandugan.com/downloads. There is a zip file that has the most recent control panel and firmware updater in it.

Many thanks for your great products; they have covered my @$$ for years!

Thanks, Jens! Please send in your registration card so I can inform you of new developments.

Is anybody on this list using audio networking now? Running audio over CAT5?
What species network are you using (Cobranet, Dante, Aviom, NAS…) and what do
you think about it?

Comments from people not using it but studying it for the future are also
welcome.
