Subject: D2 with unbalanced inserts?
watamixla
Send Email Send Email

Hello

I haven't ever run into this problem, but a friend of mine was telling
me that there is some sort of issue with using a D2 with unbalanced
inserts, such as with consoles that use a single 3 conductor 1/4"
connector for insert send & return.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with the D2 not liking unbalanced
signals, or if he simply had some cables that were wired with pin 3 as
hot or something like that...

Any light anyone can shed on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Now and then someone has a problem, usually with wiring, but so far
as I know, unbalancing the D-2 is commonly done. That's how I test it
in the inserts of my Yamaha here in the lab.

Inputs are active balanced. Only pin 2 is driven on the output; pin 3
is a passive source impedance balance network.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 9, 2008

DUGAN MODEL E-1 DEBUTS AT NAB

Dan Dugan Sound Design will show a new model in their famous line of
Automatic Mixing Controllers in booth N4217 at the NAB show in Las
Vegas, April 14-17.

The economy Model E was introduced in September, 2006, and has been
enthusiastically received by Dugan users. The Model E has been
discontinued in favor of the successor Model E-1, which implements
features that Model E users have asked for:

1) The E-1 has two pairs of ADAT connectors, one pair for digital I/O
and one pair for linking. The E-1 can be linked with the Models D-2,
D-3, and E.

2) A back panel switch changes the input from analog (TRS insert
connectors) to digital (Lightpipe). Both analog and digital outputs
are always active simultaneously.

The Model E-1 is expected to be useful in events staging, conference
sound reinforcement, houses of worship, video trucks, reality shows,
theaters, government chambers, distance learning, and
teleconferencing.

The price is $3,199.00.

Dan Dugan said "I'm pleased to be able to respond to our users' needs."

Dear Colleagues,

I'm replacing two of my three rental Model Es with E-1s--I've got to
keep one as a museum piece. I've already sold one and I have one to
go, so I'm offering it here first.

Dugan Model E, well used, good condition, with power supply, rack
mounts and manual: $1500.00 as-is.

Chris Mumaw complained:

I select the unit that I want to update. Hold down (control, shift, option) and click reset. I am prompted to find the file. I select the file and click ok. The unit reboots but still says Web UI 1.3. [should be 1.4]

Sam Wong experimented with it and found the answer:

"The file on your website is the latest. The update doesn't refresh the web page. At least on Firefox, clearing private data and cache doesn't change the web version since the Model E java object isn't cleared from the browser memory. If the user exits the browser and browses back to the unit, then it'll show V1.4."

Dear Dugan users,

I strongly recommend that you update the firmware in Models E-1, serial numbers. 119-209. It will fix a bug where a channel in Bypass mode isn't fully bypassed when using digital I/O. A zip archive containing the update file and instructions can be found at:

Subject: Models E and E-1 Firmware Updates
dandugan_1999
Send Email Send Email

Models E and E-1 Firmware Updates: New internal programs are available for both E-series models. They include an important bug fix, and improved routines for connecting to a computer.

The E-series now implements APIPA, which is also known as AutoIP. When the unit is in DHCP mode and there is no DHCP server available, after about one minute, it'll pick an IP address in the range of 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.255.255 randomly. It'll check if the IP is already taken, if yes, it'll pick another one randomly until it finds one which is not taken.

APIPA is already implemented in all PCs running the Windows operating system and Mac OS 8.5 and later, including Mac OS X. So for the end user, they no longer have to fuss with the IP address if they just want to talk to a standalone E or E-1. Simply set the PC and the E or E-1 in DHCP mode, connect the two with a Cat-5 cable (both straight and cross work for E-1, but only cross for E), wait a minute or so, launch the web interface from the PC and the E or E-1 will show up and will communicate properly.

Check your Model E's web control panel for your versions of the firmware.

Current Model E versions are Firmware 2.1, DSP 1.6, and Web CP 1.4.

Model E-1 versions are Firmware v1.2, DSP 1.6, and Web CP 1.4.

Zip archives containing the update files and instructions are in my downloads directory and in the files section of the Dugan Users Group. Do not attempt to install Model E firmware on a Model E-1 or vice-versa! The Web Control Panel CDs will run either model, no worry about mixing there.

Hi Dan,

We found a very obscure bug in the controller head. With certain magical combinations of the weight knobs and group A NOM knob, you can make a pair of channels doing christmas tree blinking. It is very difficult to reproduce, but indeed reproducible. It won't affect the audio at all, just the display going crazy. So far only one customer stumbled into that knob combination. We now have a fix, but can only be fixed by us, not by the customers. I don't think a recall is necessary. But just want you to be aware of this bug. We'll update any unit coming back for other problems. If any customer wants to have this bug fix, they only need to send back the controller head.

Sam.

That was the first model that barely worked. I don't recommend it at any price.
You could salvage a good set of octal socket plug-in preamps from it, though!

CORRECTION: the 1628 was the one that barely worked, and has the octal preamps
in it. The 1674/8 was the second model, better but still pretty poor. The 1684/8
was the last version that almost worked well enough to be a Dugan, but as in all
of the Altecs (and in the Dugan Model A) the calibration was unstable over time
because of the aging of the light-dependent-resistors in the VCA circuit.

They paid for my kids' schools, but they were never anything to be proud of.
Even after ten years the engineers still didn't understand how it worked, and
marketing insisted there be a switch that made them act like gates!

For Dugan mixers for installed sound, I recommend Protech Audio http://www.
protechaudio.com. They are quite economical.

Dear Colleagues,

In designing the Model D-4, intended to be the Dugan high-end product to replace
both the D-2 and the D-3, we have come up with an important question that you
can help us with.

We plan to make control panel interfaces for iPad for sure and maybe even
iPhone. We are tempted to leave it at that, because such a design could bring
the price down significantly!

The argument for a physical control panel is that an operator can have his or
her fingers on the buttons and eyes on the stage. I may be wrong, but I've
always thought that it is the physical control panel that makes the D-series
worth its high price, rather than the additional features (music system, groups,
etc.).

What do you think?
