The factory is cranking again and we should be shipping D-2s and D-3s
very soon.
I've just about got the pricing worked out for the the internal audio
connector upgrade for all the analog Model D series.

Hi Dan!
Thanks for letting me join your elite group!
I use your automixers from time to time in the course of doing my job, which
for the last few years has been senior audio engineer for Audio/Video
Applications, Inc. <http://www.videoapps.com>
Prior to coming on staff at Audio/Video Apps, my work was primarily in the
touring music biz, so I only occasionally used your mixers when I was doing
corporate events between tours. <http://www.watamix.com>
But I've been using them for years, both the original and the newer D-2.
Ever since I first used a Dugan mixer, I've said that to do a large-scale
corporate event without a Dugan mixer is certain suicide!
I really love the new D-2, especially the simple linking system, so that 2
of them can be totally interactive with the simple addition of a couple
optical cables. Very nice!
I understand that we will soon be purchasing 2 of those wonderful D-2's for
Audio/VideoApps. How nice that will be to have them in our inventory!
Looking forward to hearing user hints and tips for getting the most from the
Dugan mixer!
All the best,

DUGAN ANNOUNCES UPGRADES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 27, 2004
Dan Dugan has announced the availability of an upgrade to his classic
Model D and Model D-1 Automatic Mixing Controllers.
Some of these units have been shipped around to jobs weekly for
eleven years. One type of connector, used for internal audio
connections between the back panel and the circuit boards, has begun
to be unreliable due to vibration and insufficient contact pressure.
Dugan recommends replacing all these connectors with a
higher-contact-pressure type as soon as possible. Dugan will do this
plus give a unit a full factory checkup for $222.00. For owners
wanting to do the upgrade themselves, a prewired parts kit is
available for $72.00. The model number and serial number should be
specified with orders.
"Dugan products don't have a design life" Dan Dugan said. "I intend
them to last forever. This upgrade will ensure reliable service for
many years into the future."

Dan,
Thanks for starting this group. Now that I know it's here I'm sure
to read and post often. I was glad to hear of the upgrade to the D
& D-1 models. After sub-renting several units this year I have been
running across some in major need of this upgrade. Rest assured I
forwarded the announcement from your website to all my vendors that
supply your processors.
Since this is my first post I thought I would express my enthusiasm
for your product. When I first met you at an AES convention in the
early 90's you told me (Proudly) that you created "the world most
expensive auto mixer." That is most likely true but they are worth
every penny. With the "Live Mics Processor" you have helped me
create my "Signature Sound" and I thank you for that. As the Audio
Director for Clark Media <www.clarkmedia.com> I finally purchased a
D-1 and life was good. Broadcasts, Webcasts, and Live Events became
a dream. My first experience was when I rented a "D" for a Tony
Little Infomercial. I used it to record audio on set (Tony Little
with 4 actors having dialogue amongst very loud exercise
equipment). When the piece made it to post, the studio guy couldn't
believe how good the audio was. I next used a D-1 on a corporate
industrial in a nightmare scenario... Theater in round at Riverfront
Coliseum, Cincinnati for 10,000 people. Oh yeah, did I mention the
presenters demanded lavs (All 6 of them). And of course they wanted
to dialog. With the D-1 it was a snap. Now when I am booked on a
teleconference or industrial it's the first piece of gear I
request. Thank you for your product and helping me build my
reputation.
I just started my own company "Earcraft Sound Design." You can bet
that as business takes off, I'll be owning my own D-2 or D-3
(however we gotta talk about that price tag.... Ouch!!).

Congratulations, Dan!
When I arrived here in SF a few days ago, the lead audio person, Mike Leal,
told me the story about how the engineer from ESPN called you one day,
asking what this Dugan thing did, and how to use it. Then they called back
shortly thereafter, to order a bunch of them!
Check out the attached photos of our nearly new D-2's, in use during the
recent Oracle Open World conference in San Fran.

Thanks for the pictures, Ken! They are the first I've gotten of the
D-2 in action.
Remember, the D-2 control panels are small now, and they don't have
to be off to the side in a case. You can put them on the meter bridge
or in front of the console.

I got a call from a company in Los Angeles yesterday (I think it was
Hollywood Sound Systems, but I neglected to make a note). They said
they'd rented a D-2 to a CBS job, and the client was complaining
about "delay." They were going to look for a D or D-1 in the area to
rent.
The latency of the D-2 is only 1.2ms. It does make a difference when
you're monitoring your own voice on headphones--it changes the tone a
little because of the combination of the sound through your head and
the delayed sound through the headphones. But I wonder what the
problem was.

Well Dan.....
Let me tell you about it....
As with ANY digital device, there is a slight delay ("latency") on the
signals being processed by the D2. I'm not telling you anything you don't
know, of course!
We own 2 of your wonderful D2's :) And of course we LOVE them!
What I have a feeling is happening at CBS is that someone not familiar with
digital devices and their inherent latency is using the D2.
What they are probably doing is (somewhere in their system, whether it's
wrong or right), combining the dugan-ed sound of a mic, or combining a
dugan-ed mic, with a non-dugan-ed mic, resulting in a "flanging" type of
sound.
This is something I had to get used to, in terms of solo-ing two mics at the
same time (that are on one person), one being dugan-ed, the other not, when
we first switched to the D2's from the D1's that we had been renting.
I hope this makes sense....

Perfectly. Mebbie they were trying to do a mix-minus post-Dugan. That
sure wouldn't work.

I got a call from Murdoch MacNeil at ABC in Washington this morning.
He was having problems interfacing D-2s with a Midas board. The Midas
had unbalanced TRS inserts. He said he was getting a low-level tone
around 800 Hz when the D-2 was active, not in bypass.
We've had a problem with power supplies beating against each other
with linked units, but in this case though they had two units they
weren't linked, and he said it still happened with one unit
disconnected.
Murdoch said he could solve it with isolation transformers on the D-2
outputs. Sam Wong and I are still mystified.
Anybody out there have a Midas board?
-Dan
There are a few Model Ds and Model D-1s out there with the balanced
output option installed. They will behave normally when hooked up in
balanced insert loops, but in the more common unbalanced insert
patch, the return will be 6 dB down. The gain will jump up to unity
when a channel is in hard bypass.
Balanced is fine if you're always using it with the same balanced
board, but a unit that's going around with different boards would be
better off wired unbalanced. People might think a balanced unit is
broken when the return comes back at a lower level.
It isn't hard for me to take out the balanced output option.

Hi Dan
This question came up the other day, as we were planning an event involving
38 table mics:
How many Dugan D2's can be linked together to work interactively?
I know that I've linked (2) units, using 2 optical cables, but if it's
possible to link more than 2, what's the plan in terms of link cables?
Thanks!

Ken Newman, you asked,

No problem!

Eight for 64 inputs.
>I know that I've linked (2) units, using 2 optical cables, but if it's

They connect in a ring. Link out to link in, then out from the last
unit to in of the first. See the diagram repeated on p. 23 of the
manual.

Just a reminder to anyone in the Bay Area (or willing to travel
there) that my annual open house is tomorrow, Sunday, noon to 10:00
PM. Food, friends, conversation, nature recordings, and a prototype
of a new Dugan product shown for the first time.

I showed the Model E prototype at the NAB in Las Vegas. I didn't have
the box yet, but I was able to demonstrate the circuit board,
working! I got another set of four headsets, so there could be a
Model E demonstration and a D-2 demonstrationg going at the same
time. My intern Brian Ward helped.
We also made a wood block mockup of the Model E with graphics of the
front and back panels pasted on. This inspired jokes about solid
state electronics and "knock on wood."
Everybody was happy with the small size (half-rack) and the low price
($2995.00).
I hope to be shipping in a couple of months.
-Dan
Good new, Dan. Any chance of a preview peek at its visuals? a photo of
the mock up, or designs for the case, would allay my curiosity...
Looking forward to it!

I just got the current issue of Sound and Video Contractor. It has an
article profiling "AV Industry Icons" and I'm one of them!
http://svconline.com/mag/avinstall_av_industry_icons/
I'm in impressive company with Leo Beranek (started the first big
acoustical consulting business), Yves Faroudja (video processing used
by everybody), Tim Berners-Lee (invented http), Don & Carolyn Davis
(equalization), Henry Kloss (the bookshelf speaker, video
projection), and Ray Dolby (tape noise reduction, quality sound for
movies).
They're all real engineers; I just play one at work.

Congratulations, Dan! Couldn't be in better company. You completely
deserve it.

You are indeed in esteemed company, but in my eyes, you are THE most
important of all of them!
Thank you for mixing all the panel discussions (not to mention the rest of
the shows) that I "mix".
