I always found the docs on this subject somewhat confusing, granted it's a very complicated topic though. I think I came to the conclusion,  it's been almost two years ago now, that XA is supported if the DB and driver support it for JMS transactions but if the JMS server additionally has a persistent store all bets are off. 

Weblogic 8.1 JMS just didn't have the full support for high availability that we needed. 9.0 adds more features and you might try reading the 9.0 docs as they might better explain the issues with these features since they more fully support them now. Good luck and I like to hear what you find.

I'd love to see a good overview of the new 9.1 JMS features if it hasn't been done at a meeting already.
