MidAtlantic Midrange is offering a Day Of Java and Websphere
Application Development with IBM's Claus Weiss of the Toronto
Development Lab.
This one-day seminar explores issues and techniques that will help
you develop applications to be ready for the browser as well as the
legacy on your AS/400 and iSeries using the latest and best methods.
Our intent is for even the newest OS/400 Java programmer to end the
day with the concepts and basic how-to's of writing their first Java
programs and becoming productive with applications in Java and
Websphere.
We start the day with The iSeries Developer Roadmap. Many iSeries
developers are confused in today's world of e-business about what
their options are to enhance their skills, while many architects are
confused about how to move their applications forward. You don't have
to become a Java or even a WebSphere expert, although you very well
might want to. This session will clearly lay out for an iSeries
developer a specific series of incremental stages to progress
through, to move your skills and
applications from SEU-plus-RPG to WebSphere Studio-plus-Java, or
simply to a Web user interface with modern RPG.
Then we move on to: Java for RPG programmers. Java, Java, Java. RPG,
RPG, RPG. Do they relate? Will the coming Java train leave me at the
station with my RPG baggage? Can I learn Java? Come and see the Java
language from an RPG programmer?s perspective and see why Java is
well within your capabilities. Java, after all, is not a cup of
coffee, but another language that can mix very well with your RPG
code.
Which is followed by: User Interface modernization with the IBM
WebFacing tool. The IBM WebFacing tool is an integral part of the
WebSphere Development Studio Client product. It allows to convert
existing DDS UI descriptions to Web based Java Server Page
descriptions to easily modernize current text based UI applications
by giving them a browser enabled User Interface.
In this session, learn:
1. How this WebFacing tool will convert your existing DDS source into
JSPs and XML.
2. How WebFacing provide a server runtime environment that allows your
existing iSeries programs (RPG and others) to communicate with these
converted browser enabled screens
Create new RPG Web applications with the WebTools in WebSphere
Development Studio Client. What is a web application? How does the
user interface get defined, how can it interface with server
RPG/COBOL programs, what does the servlet do in a web application.
How does WDSc help you to create a web application.
We end the day with RPG and COBOL tools in WebSphere Development
Studio (WDSC): The Remote System Explorer (RSE) The Remote Systems
Explorer (RSE) is the development environment within WebSphere
Development Studio client that allows you to develop RPG and COBOL
applications. This development tool is the 21st century follow-on to
the world of SEU, SDA, PDM, etc and even CODE/ 400. All the things
that a developer might wish were possible with a green screen are in
the RSE and some that you haven't even thought of yet!! Other
benefits include improving programmer productivity and morale, off-
loading host development workload and allowing existing applications
to be maintained more effectively.
After the Thursday session is the WAM User Group Meeting in College
Park. The subject of the evening meeting is RPG IV - the Next Stuff
and Beyond. Details will be on the WAM website, but to reserve space
at that should also RSVP to KB Soni at mailto:kbsoni@...
