I am new to DVD development. I need to develop an
application in C++ on windows that writes some file to
a DVD and then read those files.

I need to use DVD-RAM. Can I have some pointers

Self-Destructing DVDs Face a Breakdown with Consumers, 321 Studios Survey
Reveals

ST. LOUIS - Jun. 17, 2003 - In a survey released today by 321 Studios,
makers of DVD copying software, 76 percent of respondents stated that they
would not be interested in renting a self-destructing DVD. This survey was
conducted in response to the recent reports that Flexplay and The Walt
Disney Co. home video unit, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, will launch a
DVD rental program this August that makes DVDs unreadable after 48 hours.

The 321 Studios survey asked consumers, "Would you consider renting a
self-destructive DVD?" 3,839 respondents answered no. The results of the
survey demonstrate that consumers are not only uninterested in the rental of
impermanent home entertainment technology, they find the concept unfavorable
to their rights as consumers.

"This move to create self-destructing DVDs by Buena Vista Entertainment
implies that consumers are dishonest in their use of technology, and
consumers are not pleased with this implication. Customers should not be
criminalized when they go to rent a movie," said Robert Moore, president of
321 Studios.

In addition, consumers are displeased with the negative environmental impact
of these products. The creation of these non-recyclable, one-use products
will create unnecessary landfill waste or release harmful toxins into the
air when trash is incinerated. Environmental experts agree that
self-destructing DVDs are extremely harmful to the environment. Instead of
producing a disc that would be used when rented by 50 to 100 persons, the
resources and energy used to create that disc will be multiplied by 50 or
100 times. Consumers that rent DVDs - like the 5,051 respondents that
participated in the survey - overwhelmingly prefer to either to purchase or
rent traditional DVDs.

"This survey demonstrates that consumers do not react favorably to corporate
irresponsibility by movie studios or manufacturers. The self-destructing DVD
business model only benefits the makers of these unnecessary products, and
the losers are the environment and consumers," Moore stated. "We at 321
Studios are proud to give consumers a voice through surveys such as this and
our campaign, Protect Fair Use."

Survey results include:

-- 76 percent (3,839 respondents) of DVD users surveyed stated that they
would not be interested in renting a self-destructing DVD.

-- 15 percent (758 respondents) replied that they would rent a
self-destructing DVD only if the price were low.

-- Nine percent (454 respondents) stated that they would consider renting a
self-destructing DVD.

Methodology:

321 Studios administered a national survey targeting consumers that have
Internet access. This survey was conducted with the purpose of uncovering
information from consumers about DVD replacement. Industry studies by design
involve small samples of participants for exploratory research purposes.
This survey was administered on 321 Studios' Web site and via an opt-in
option. The survey garnered participation from 5,5051 unique visitors to the
321 Studios Web site.

About 321 Studios

I have heard of them and i definitely want to try them out. I do not
know much about them either, but it would be nice not to worry about
returns if the price is around $5.

I read about them.

Disney is going to start putting them out.

As soon as they are exposed to oxygen, the process starts. There is a
coating on them that disintegrates and then its unplayable. Apparently, you
have 2 days to view them.

They are NOT recyclable and I think this is terrible.
In 2002, 891.4 million DVDs were rented. If just 10% of those had been
disposable, that would have added more than 89 million DVDs to our
landfills, in addition to wasting valuable energy resources to create
millions more DVDs than are currently manufactured.

We already have enough disposable discs entering our waste stream, thanks to
AOL's ubiquitous discs, and services already exist to allow easier return of
rental DVDs, like Netflix's U.S. Mail return system. Video-on-demand
services are another alternative option that would not generate the waste
that this ill-conceived plan would generate.

Have you guys heard of the new disposable DVDs? Someone just told me
about them tonight. I guess, from what I heard, you get so much
allotted time to watch the movie and then the DVD isn't watchable
anymore. And then you can recycle them. I'm one of those people who
have late fees all over town, hehe, so this of course sounded neat to
me. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of them and what's going
on with them.

Taking it out of the country should not be a problem. It is
impossible to region code a DVD-R so you wouldn't run into that issue.

Copying the disc should not be a problem either as copy protection
can also not be applied to a DVD-R. You may have to copy the disc to
a hard drive first if you don't have both a reader and a writer in
your PC.

Most modern PAL televisions/DVD players can play a NTSC disc so that
shouldn't be a problem either.

Perhaps I can help with these questions. First off, a
DVD holds 4.7 gigibytes of information. When making a
DVD for video playback I think the limit is, on some,
3.95 and on some around 4.2. The rest is used for the
menues.
As for a 45 minute video, a DVD should be able to hold
up to 2 hours of video depending on the bitrate video
quality. I am making a collection of Barney Miller
DVDs. I put 3 22 minute shows on each. I could
probably get away with 4 at a lower bitrate, but it's
all planned out for 3 so I am sticking with it. With
the menu structure each DVD runs around 3.25 Gig.
All DVD video MUST be an .mpg file. .AVI doesn't
work. Some DVD burners, or authoring softare will
accept .AVI files as stock video, but will do the
encoding when creating the DVD.
I have yet to see on this list a good suggestion as to
what the best way to encode video. (IE. highest
quality/lowest file size.) I use VideoFactory to
encode the files and DVDit to author the DVD into a
folder, then Nero to burn the DVD. I've looked at
TMPG, but didn't see any improvement. And it's
slower.
I keep looking for suggestions though.

1) I assume your media is a recordable type , the only pressed DVDs I
have seen are silver, silver-black or gold in color.

2) You can get more info on what media is giving you trouble by
picking up ADVDInfo at http://forum.firmware-flash
.com/viewtopic.php?t=3352. I'm giving you the forum so you figure
out what the info means and it's numerous limitations.

3) My guess is that with DVD drive & Media prices dropping you are
seeing problems with your drive interfacing with the newer 2X media.
4x media is still a little rare.

4) In my case I use a Pioneer DVR-104 (DVD-R) drive and pretty much
exclusively use 2x purple media. According to the info this is
Verbatim but it it rebranded Apple or Maxell. I have had 0 problems
with this media. I use Nero to burn and have burned ~30 data disks
without any verify errors. If the media is DVD+R then it may be
another brand. It's also possible that some other mfg. is making
purple media.

Some suggestions:
        a) Make sure the supplier of the disk and your company have
flashed your drives to the latest BIOS. The BIOS contains look up
tables for laser strength based upon the media. If not in the table
a default value is used that may give you extra errors.

        b) Make sure the disk creator is doing it with verify on if
not use a program like CDCheck (http://www.elpros.si/CDCheck/)
You should run CDCheck with your disk and if you get errors return
the disk to the maker and have them do the same check. It may just
be a drive incompatability.

        c) Your company might consider telling the maker what brand of
media to use. You could even roll the cost of the blank media into
your fee and ship out good media to the maker.

        d) DVD drives are cheap (check pricewatch) you could pick up a
few different brands for <$50 each that may be able to be used on
problem disks.

I work for a company that does video streaming. We get our Real
Media and Windows Media files by transcoding from an MPEG-2 that we
have grabbed a live capture from a DVD or VHS source via a video
capture card.

Now here's my question. As of late, from 'studios' who produce less
than stellar material, we've been getting a rash of DVD's that seem
FAR more fragile if not finicky. Most of these DVD's are colored
red, blue, or purple (purple is the worst) They seem far more likely
to exhibit severe video problems as a result of scratches, dust, etc.

Are these just poor quality DVD's that are sold for a low price? Is
there such a difference in the price of these DVD's versus higher
quality DVD's?

Essentially, what I'm asking is whether or not I'm dealing with
people who are being cheap, or are simply buying the ONLY thing that
is available at a remotely affordable cost.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I am curious if anyone knows where I could get the basics on DVD development
aside from a book. 2 to 5 days in a training course that would cover the basics
of the process, enough to help me get started in the field. I already do a
interactive CD's using Director, I would now like to get started in the DVD area
but would like some advice on where to get that training.

Thanks in Advance

I'm not trying to copy protected DVDs or non protected
DVDs. In fact, I'm not trying to copy DVDs at all.
I'm trying to convert TV video to DVDs. I've been
recording Barney Miller from TVLand. I'm looking for
the best video compression to do so.
Also, I have a protected VHS movie that I'd like to
make a DVD of, but the protection on the tape won't
allow me to.
That is for my own use though. In fact they are all
for my own use.

I have been trying to make DVD with Mpeg streams of 90 minutes. The
file size is right around 3 gig, with a fairly thorough menu stucture
to navigate the video. I use Sonic's DVDit to produce the menu.
I've read that DVD can hold 4.7 gig, but that 3.95 is the limitation
for video DVDs. Why is it that DVD it tells me I am over size limit
with a video that's just over 3 gig? What is the Mpeg size limit for
this? I have been able to succesfully burn DVDs with 70 minutes of
video with an overall file size of 2.6 gig. That's pretty
dissapointing in the end if the size limit for a 4.7 gig DVD is
actually 2.6 gig. Can anyone illuminate me on this?

Hello,

I'm new in this group and new in DVD world. I have a problem with DVD
image stability. I think that is a problem of syncronization because
the image is always moving from left to right and I can't do anything
to stop it. I've tried to configure the EXT (EURO-AV connection)port
of my TV, but I can only set the vertical trigger.

any one of you can show me some light in this anomaly

thanks

xingles

Check out this new place for Auctions and Fixed price Sales (no
listing fee).

I personally liked the amazing : "AUTO-RELIST UNTIL SOLD" option.

Hi Guys:

I'm new to the forum.

I'm creating an enhanced DVD and I would like to include PS2 and Xbox
game demos that can be used on the actual respective game machines.
Anybody know if this can be done and if so how. All suggestions and
ideas appreciated.

Warm regards,
