Peter,
I can confirm Digital Atmosphere with RAOB and SYNOP but not sure
about GRIB.
In addition:
.Tiff files are clear with MS Office Document Imaging as are the Fx's.
Ps files work with Ghostscript (see other postings)
Wind plot, at least the version I have only seems to plot wind, and
pressures at various altitudes. Any ideas on this?
The DOS synop decoder is a bit clumsy, but then I am not a command
line devotee - there are some (expensive) windows versions.

David,
DWDSAT data started at 1445 today. Very efficient service from DWD and
EUMETSAT. Posted registration forms on the 30th June. Have received and
viewd TIFF, IA5 and RAR files. Grib files plotting with Windplot.

For information - MS IE will automatically unzip a .GZ file when
downloading, so rename and you can view the file directly in Windows
XP. No need for a special plug-in. By the way, the MSG Data
Manager would rename the equivalent file:
fx401-ana_pfr_na_p_000_000-0407010000-zv.tif
Cheers,
David
Hi,
I found out that the fax images found on the WebWerdis interface to
DWD data are actually compressed TIFF images that can be opened quite
simply in any web browser using a software tool like AlternaTIFF:
http://www.alternatiff.com
You just need to download the file and rename it, by getting rid of
the .gz extension and adding the extension .tif or .tiff.
So a file like:
fx401-ana_pfr_na_p_000_000-0407010000-zv---tiff.gz
would become
fx401-ana_pfr_na_p_000_000-0407010000-zv---tiff.tif
and would open up nicely in the browser once the AlternaTIFF plugin
is installed.
Note that AlternaTIFF, which is free software, also provides nice
tools like rotate, zoom and pan, all within the normal IE web page.
Highly recommended addon to IE!

Not one of the easier sites to navigate and mostly in German. As far as I can
see the main advantage is a plethora of charts for different atmospheric layers,
again in German (obviously). The images we have already. Am I missing something,
it doesn't seem to be worth subscribing to given what we already have and I
suspect that iso charts are in the pipeline for Eumetcast.

You would be best to ask one of those who is actually receiving data
for samples, as they may know what's typical and I do not. I have
seen resampled NOAA and FengYun orbiter images (not as high
resolution as HRPT), Meteosat-5/6/7 images, and a whole plethora of
weather charts in FAX/TIFF format. Windows XP will display all of
these directly. As yet, I haven't seen any PS, TAR or IA5 files.

David

Folks,
Although I am not receiving DWDSAT data myself, thanks to the
information and samples you supplied I have been able to start
updating the MSG Data Manager to process DWDSAT data. The functions
available so far are:
- recognise DWDSAT data received by Tellique
- copy the data from the Tellique folder to your \images\ folder
- recognise the date in the DWDSAT files
- so you get data in \images\DWDSAT\year\month\day folders
- rename the files for processing
- note that the text files are renamed to .IA5 rather than .TXT
- you can associate .IA5 files with notepad for reading
- but it might be nicer to have a program to display the data!
- delete the raw data
On the MSG Data Manager, Setup tab, Channel selection, Other tab,
you will need to enable:
- the DWDSAT data processing
- the individual file types you want to keep (IA5, PS, TAR, TIFF)
I have only been able to test on a limited set of data, so the sort
of issues you might see are:
- some files not recognised by the program, so they get left in the
Tellique received folder instead of being copied
- the date incorrectly decoded from some files, so that they end up
in \images\DWDSAT\ and not in the \year\month\day\ folder structure.
Any reports would be appreciated. You can pick up the beta from my
Web site.
Cheers,
David

Hi all.
Just a question: I have enabled PID 302 to receive DWD-SAT data (which i
have successfully registered for at eumetsat + dwd), but i receive no data.
Can anyone tell me whether i maybe have to enable a special channel for
that?
On which channel is dwd-sat data being received?
Thanks in advance!

I received the DWDSAT Licence Agreement and Schedule this morning to be
signed, dated and returned to DWD. An invoice will be sent by seperate post.
I note in the Agreement Article 5 para (2)
"Payments shall be transferred in Euro to bank account indicated in the
invoice. Possibly incurring bank charges shall be borne by the Licensee"
DWD accept payment by credit card for their shop products. I shall
email Kurt Winkler and clarify this point.
Peter
Many thanks to David for starting this list and Douglas for co-moderating!
Bernd and Thomas sparked my interest and Bernd forwarded info and files to
me as I don't have DWDSAT data (yet?).
Based on the TQ log I created a listing of the DWDSAT files received during
a period of 24 hour.
If I have access (I just subscribed to this group) I will upload this table
to the files area.
To give an idea of DWDSAT; in 24 hour it yields around 993 files, 191
different "products" in 8 different data formats.
Processing this data is different from Eumetcast. Data is not segmented and
mostly uses existing file formats.
But you do need to sort out on category and rename the files to be able to
open/view them on a PC.
*---tiff data contains a TIFF image and must be renamed *.tif
*-ia5 data contains Synops ascii text and must be renamed *.txt
*-tar data contains a tar archive, renaming to *.tar and unpacking using
Winzip gives around 8 binary GRIB files
Again rename these *-bin files to *.grb
*---ps data contains Postscript, rename to *.ps and view using
Gsview/Ghostscript
An extended MSG DataManager could do this, just as it is handling the
ATOVS/RSS data at this moment.
Alternatively a DOS script that renames and moves the data, initiated by
the MSGnotify option from MDM could do the job too.
But most work is going to be converting/viewing the data.
I successfully managed to convert the .ps data to colour PDF charts using
the free Gsview/Ghostscript package.
Although DWDSAT is a separate stream, I do see a lot of similarities with
the MPEF data present on Eumetcast here.
Both use GRIB data, GRIdded Binary data that needs to be interpreted and
projected on a map.
As I already tried to read the MPEF GRB+ files using different programs
without success so I tried the DWDSAT .grb files and have some success.
So we should be looking for a program/viewer able to read the GRIB files
(edition 1)
I tried ViewFax (part of the Airmail package) with almost no success.
Currently running a limited trial version of WindPlot 7 with mixed results.
I can convert some of the GRIB data to very nice colour maps.
A lot of commercial GRIB viewers are available but note that GRIB is a very
versatile format and most viewers are aimed at Sailers, not meteorologists.
I also installed a PC version of the GrADS package (Win32e GrADS), but this
needs a complete study!
Unfortunately I am still looking for a BUFR viewer to handle the .bfr+
files in the MPEF data stream !
Greetings,
Arne van Belle
Folks,
I *am* receiving DWD-GDS data and have not signed a licence agreement
with DWD or paid for the service.
I have an email here from someone at DWD (but not Herr Winkler) that
outlines my access to the data. I had considered copying it here but I
don't think that's very fair without the author's consent particularly
if, as seems increasingly likely, I have been incorrectly given free
access!
What I have done is emailed my contact with a copy of his original
message to me, explaining that the information given to others who are
wanting access to the data is rather different from what he'd told me.
If he stands by his original email to me, I'll get his permission to
post it here. (If he *doesn't* stand by it, I'll probably lose *my*
access. Ah well.....!)
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Allan

I think the quoted cost of 39p a day on a previous mail will actually be
nearer 26p a day if my calculations are correct. Is it not 145 Euros for the
annual fee which at the moment is less than £100.

David and Peter,
Same here.
I deally I would like to use all the GDS data except the Meteosat and
GOES images (doesn't seem much point in getting those!)
That is, the relevant fx,gts and sat01-noaa data to be separated out
by MSG data manager.
Thanks, David, for setting up the group.

David,
Maybe a good starting point to display the 175 GDS products as listed in
http://www.dwd.de/en/Technik/Kommunikation/dwdsat/dwdsat-gds.htm
Transferring and decompressing the GZIP tiff files from the received folder
into a directory structure similar to that at
https://tiofas13.dwd.de/lightversion/
Select Binary Data i ,ii and iii which appear to relate to the area covered.
I wonder why they persist with the tiff format ? I think the satellite products
are jpegs and all files GZIP.

Folks,
Welcome to the DWDSAT Yahoo Group. I hope we will have a lively

including how to decide which of the many data streams to process,
what presentation of the data suits us best, and how to manage the
many daily updates.
