When a distinguished but elderly scientist says that something is
possible, he is almost certainly right. When he says it is
impossible, he is very probably wrong.

**Note on long URLs: Since I posted my resume last week, I actually
have received a couple of emails from readers saying that the link
wouldn't work and that they were distraught at not being able to
see the document. (OK, I added that last part).
Anyway, I thought that I would remind folks that sometimes the links
for the stories and/or files in this newsletter may be too long to
fit on one line. In that case, they are wrapped to a second line,
sometimes leaving them clickable and sometimes not. The fix is to
simply cut and paste the two lines into your browser's address
bar. Hope this helps.

The downturn in the economy and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks have

that should fuel even more growth in the rapidly growing sector,

SCHOOLS ASKING LIBRARIANS TO DEVELOP E-LEARNING SERVICES
Increasingly, librarians at higher learning institutions are being
tapped to develop new services for online learning programs. However,
librarians seldom have new resources with which to achieve this. The
varied approaches to online education throughout academia have meant
that libraries must create equally diverse programs to serve new
users, making the task even more difficult. Read full story at

NEW BOOK TOUTS VALUE OF "INVISIBLE" WEB RESOURCES
Some of the best online resources are hidden from view, according to
Internet search consultant Chris Sherman and reference librarian Gary
Price. Such resources and how to find them are the topic of their new
book, "The Invisible Web: Uncovering Information Sources Search
Engines Can't See." The authors contend that there are billions of
Web sites that search engines do not index, either for business
reasons or because of technological incompatibility. The book
identifies 1,000 databases directly accessible through the Web which
cannot be indexed by the automated "spider" programs search engines
use. Sherman says that he and Price consider this portion to be
the "biggest part of the invisible Web, and the most important reason
people should care about it."

SCHOOLS FIND PRACTICAL USES FOR WEB-BASED TECHNOLOGIES
Colleges and universities across the country are embracing Web-based
and wireless technologies not for the implementation of full-fledged
e-learning programs, but in the hopes of improving educational
experiences for students and streamlining administrative procedures.
Wake Forest University has built a wireless LAN as well as student
portals used to store and manage course work data, records, and
transcripts. Meanwhile, Albertson College has implemented a program
in which students are given standardized laptops connected to a
wireless LAN. It is designed to foster easier collaboration, access
to campus services, and assignment checkups.

RIAA Turns to Hacking to Battle Song Swapping
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) lobbied for
immunity from damage claims resulting from copyright holders'
attempts to crack private computers to enforce copyright protection.
Widespread criticism prevented that political strategy from working,
but the RIAA has apparently not given up on hacking tactics. This
ZDNet story reveals that the RIAA is developing software which will
masquerade as a user on popular trading networks like Gnutella and
Morpheus in order to disrupt the file traffic. The software would
essentially create a denial-of-service attack by repeatedly trying to
download the same song. We assume that it would not be difficult for
developers to quickly identify and disable such attacks.
