Cool Site:

Most of you know that I am big computer-gamer type. Well, here is a
technology that can certainly have an impact on game-based learning
especially. Havok makes a real-time physics engine that allows
objects and their interactions with other objects in simulations to
be modeled in real-time. It's amazing to watch (the site has
demos).

I just wanted to include a couple of notes here. First, thanks for
your patience. As I mentioned last time, I have been down at the
I/ITSEC conference this past week. The conference was a great
success. Attendance was in line with past years and the program I
work on, ADL (www.adlnet.org), quite unexpectedly won the
conference's Governor's Award for innovation in training.
ADL's Plugfest 5 was also a great success. I also enjoyed meeting
a couple of my faithful readers – its good to know you're
actually out
there!

Secondly, I wanted to draw your attention to a couple of news items
that might otherwise slip by. In one case, the courts upheld a ruling
that said that a Web site could not even LINK to another site with
software on it that MIGHT be used for illegal purposes. Does that
mean that Google could be liable as well? Another case in effect
gave approval for the RIAA to use scare tactics and threats to
attempt to intimidate researchers away from commercially
controversial topics. These rulings are chilling both to free speech
and research.

And finally, yes I know it has taken me until Monday to get this out,
but I will get back on schedule this Wednesday.

Pentagon to preserve makeshift memorials for Sept. 11 victims
By Kellie Lunney : Mementos left for victims of the Sept. 11
terrorist attack on the Pentagon will be preserved for history, the
Defense Department said Thursday. The department has hired a moving
company to start collecting thousands of letters, photographs and
flags left on the grounds of the Pentagon to remember victims. Nearly
200 people were killed Sept. 11 when terrorists crashed a plane into
the Pentagon. The moving company, supervised by military and Defense
Protective Services personnel, started collecting mementos around the
attack site on Friday. The memorabilia will be catalogued and
preserved for history by the Army Department's Center for
Military History, said Defense spokesman Jim Turner. Full story:

How to Build an E-learning Community

Computers in Libraries: HOW A LIBRARIAN CAN LIVE NINE LIVES IN A
KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY: How people read and learn is no longer a
total mystery! You can get an idea of the different ways people work
in computer-mediated environments if you study and process the data
from log files of Web servers. You can discover how users behave
inside an interface, what they are actually searching for, and what
routes they take. This is a veritable revolution for publishing and
education, not just for libraries.

IT Training: WHY E-LEARNING IS FAILING TO CONVINCE THE MARKET
A huge obstacle in the uptake of e-learning is the current lack of a

ESSAY: REINVENTING PEDAGOGY
In an essay written for Syllabus magazine, Nishikant Sonwalkar writes
that the classroom-based learning experience is being transformed
into one that is Internet-based and student-centric rather than
teacher-centric. Technological advancements in voice recognition,
wireless PDAs, and virtual reality are naturalizing the Web-supported
learning environment. But using online technology to mimic the
classroom restricts a teacher's instructive ability; a much more
flexible, interactive, and adaptive paradigm is required, one that
supports multiple cognitive modes--kinesthetic, auditory, and visual.

Ask the Author: E-Learning
Quality e-learning programs are different from traditional
ways of learning, and e-learning is more complicated than
posting manuals and other classroom materials on the Web.

your questions about e-learning.

This time last year we made some predictions for e-learning, We said
that learning portals would be in a panic; that learning objects
would be ubiquitous; that e-learners would require human support and
that the demand for bespoke content would leave you struggling to
find a developer with capacity. As you would expect, these
suggestions were made without foreknowledge of economic downturns or
terrorist attacks - otherwise they would surely have been right on
target! Nevertheless, Clive Shepherd sticks his neck out again, with
his review of the e-learning world in the closing months of 2001 and
his fashion statements for 2002.

e-learning Magazine: NO MORE DIGITAL PAGE-TURNING
Elliott Masie: Whenever there is a new technology, early usage is
often modeled after something that is familiar. Right now, we see
many of the classroom or textbook metaphors shining through. About 98
percent of the e-learning content that is now offered to adult,
corporate learners, is modeled after a textbook or classroom
metaphor. The textbook "form factor" leads to extensive collections
of text-based information that is viewable or searchable by a
reader... I am waiting to see newer and more provocative design
models emerge for e-learning—models that combine classic
instructional design principles with the engagement components of
gaming and e-commerce. And models that recognize the unique
relationship of learner/keyboard/monitor and a learning process that
is much more latitudinal in nature.
