I can understand the respons and we as technicall guys try to explain
tech stuff in normaly words. But mostly we forget because the
technicall work
takes up a lot of time. We would like to spend more time explain the
benefits of certain things but we sometimes don't get around doing
that.

Anyway in 486 or possibly even the 386 computer the HLT instruction was
introduced. This is a kind of quick on off switches that makes the CPU
idle.
It reduces energy consumption and also the heat developement! Especialy
in laptops this is important. Your hard ware lasts longer and your
battery
life increases!
Orginaly the _W4 kernel (which does not support multiple CPU's) had
support for CPU HLT instruction.

The SMP kernel we now use today in eCS (also on machines with a single
core system) does not have HLT support build in.
People tried in various ways to implement this. Andy Willes tried a
patch but from what I read that did not work in all cases.
Implementing such a patch is also no easy. It now seems David come up
with a such method.

As every CPU (amd and Intel) support his HLT instruction it should make
people there computers a lot cooler and reduce the electricityt bill
:-)

Thanks everyone for the explanations.

And thanks, David, for still another outstanding piece of work.

Hi all,

Not sure which is the correct forum for this question so apologies if
it's in the wrong place!

I'm trying to get to grips with Samba. I have installed Samba server on
my main eCS desktop in order to talk to a WIn7 notebook that I use.
This works from the Win7 machine, in that I can see the shares on the
eCS one and transfer files, etc. Despite reading & following Gene's
tutor for getting the Samba client to work with Win7, I just cannot get
it to work at all.

However, my immediate problem is with WinXP. I have a couple of WinXP
boxes on my network I need to communicate with and would like to be able
to do it with Samba. The Samba client on the eCS box sees them fine but
I'm confused about passwords in the first instance. When I click on the
Samba client icon I get asked to log on. What ID and password is
required here? If I ignore this box I can still get into Samba, see the
WinXP box & shares, but then I'm aske for another password. Is this the
password required to log into the WinXP box? I've tried this but get
messages saying that the login includes an illegal character - but I
can't understand this!

I'm really not too comfortable with networking as you may have gathered
so some help would be appreciated!

Dave

** Every iNTEL CPU commencing with the 4004(4-bit) and continuing
through the 8008,8080, 8088, 80188 (8-bit), 8086, 80186, 80286 (16-bit),
80386, 80486, Pentium (32-bit) and all AMD CPUs (and almost certainly
every other computer CPU manufactured) has had a HALT instruction -
included in its instruction set. From the 8086 onwards (it preceded the
8088) it is a one byte instruction opcode of 0xF4 which takes 4 clock
cycles, and is a privileged instruction (Ring zero).

This HLT instruction stops program execution and places the processor in
a HALT state. With interrupts enabled, receipt of a maskable interrupt
request on INTR, or NMI (non-maskable hardware interrupt - always
enabled) or a RESET will resume execution of the program(s). If an
interrupt (including NMI) is used to resume execution after a HLT
instruction, the saved CS:IP (or CS:EIP) value points to the instruction
following the HLT instruction.

HLT may be used as an alternative to an endless software loop in
situations where a program must wait for an interrupt.

CS:(E)IP = code segment and instruction pointer address

Mike

My apologies for the off-topic spam, but I hope you'll understand why I
feel that this is worthwhile. Also, sorry if you've received a variation
of this message from me already, but I'm trying to pass this along to
everyone I know.

As many of you are aware, for the past five years I've been living and
teaching at public school in Fukushima, Japan. The town where I live was
affected by fallout from the 2011 nuclear accident, forcing the village of
Yamakiya (one of our outlying communities) to be evacuated entirely. Many
of my students are from this area and have had their lives turned upside
down, forced to abandon their homes, their farms, and in many cases their
families' livelihoods.

Quite a number of them are members of the Yamakiya Taiko Club, an
award-winning group devoted to the art of traditional Japanese drumming.
They regularly perform at at national competitions, and have won several.
The club is made up mostly of schoolchildren and young adults from
elementary school to college age. I can tell you that they are some of the
most charming and wonderful kids anywhere.

In March, my predecessor in this position, Darryl Wharton (now an associate
professor of film in Baltimore) helped organize a trip for selected members
of the Taiko Club to visit the 100th Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington,
DC. The trip was an amazing success, both for the children themselves and
for all of the people in the U.S. who were able to see and meet them. Now
Darryl is trying to realize a new project for these kids: a documentary
film telling the story of the Yamakiya Taiko Club.

To this end he has launched a project page on KickStarter to raise the
necessary funds. The information is here, including a 4-minute proposal
video: http://kck.st/KvQ1cC

The fundraising period lasts until July 11th. We have only three days
left, and we're still not quite at our goal. Due to the way Kickstarter
works, the project will not receive any funding if we don't hit the target.

Even if you feel that you can't contribute personally, if you know anybody
else who might be interested in doing so, I would very much appreciate it
if you could pass this along.

Thanks!
Alex Taylor

Usually when I get Ring 0 Traps, a memory chip is going bad.

It might also be a precursor to a hard drive failure.

My help is free.

see only a logical volume, since i use an LSI logic hw raid SATA2 controller
(mraid.add)

of course, since i use it on all servers, never had a trap on mraid.add
it's rock solid

i guess the ring0 traps could be on JFS.JFS, TCPIP SOCKET or OS2KRNL,
i've also a dump but dated march 2012

i'm now installing DUMPIFS, since i've 2GB ram and i can't use anymore
the FAT FS for ring0 trapdumps

Group:

When I try to link to the site:

www.elmercurio.cl

with OS2 Firefox versions 4 to 10, I don't get the login page I should,
but the typical window 'Open with / Save file' with the following
content:

You have chosen to open

Login.aspx
which is a: aspx File (12.3 KB)
from: http://pram.elmercuio.com

The page opens OK with Windows Firefox and also with OS2 LightWeight2
browser, but as the latter does not support Flash, I can't access all
the content of the page.

Any hints?

oh yea... I had this problem in other OS's as well..

Its an issue with the Browser Agent, just try to find a firefox add on
called "User Agent Switcher"

the set the browser agent as eg. Explorer 8 ..

Hello everybody, a simple question (already posted on comp.os.os2
newsgroups).

Seems that Facebook chat is unreachable with firefox for OS/2 since the
10.0 release. Did some of you notice this behaviour? Or is it just me?

I did a complete firefox install, but still have this strange issue with
all the latest releases. Maybe I messed something in FF configuration,
but I don't remember.

In your opinion, what could be wrong? Or do you have the same issue?

Thanks in advance.

Firefox is a reduced feature set, reduced functionality, crippled
shell around the underlying Mozilla Gekko engine. The full
functionality, uncrippled browser that uses the Mozilla Gekko engine
is Seamonkey. I do not have a log-in name or password for
www.elmercurio.cl to test what happen if I attempted to log in, but
the log-in page itself loads fine here in Seamonkey.

You can get the latest version of Seamonkey (which also contains the
entire mail client and newsreader functionality of Thunderbird) here:
http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html

The page loads in Seamonkey without the User Agent Switcher add-on.

I have downloaded VLC v2.0.2 from Hobbes and am unable to run it. The
requirements include QT v4.7.3GA . I have on my system QT v4.6.3.834
dating from 2010 which is obviously not suficient to run this version of
VLC.

I cannot find QT4.7.3 anywhere to download it. Does anyone know where I
may get a copy of the required QT 4.7.3GA?

It's on netlabs

http://svn.netlabs.org/qt4

The web page explains how you'll need RPM/YUM to install QT.

Thank you Neil and Elbert. I was hoping to find something like an already
made WPI installer for this, but alas, it appears things will not be so
easy!

I've not installed or made use of anything RPM on ECS, so this will be
something of a learning curve for me. Hopefully, it will not prove too
difficult.

Thanks to you both for your incredibly rapid and useful replies.

Nor have I. Instead of the RPM/YUM, I downloaded
<ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/qt4/4.7.3/qt4-4.7.3-1.zip> which just contains the
files. To install, if I remember correctly, I just unzipped the DLL's into a
directory on my existing LIBPATH. And while I have not rigorously tested it, I
seem to have a functioning QT4.7.3.

Let us know if it works for you. I have QT4.7.3 installed and it still will
not work.

Thanks, guys. Seamonkey did the trick. Now I can read my newspaper without
having to move to Windoze.
