The story i¹d heard (and i think it is probably mostly mythological) was
that the Em@iler codebase was ³sold² to Micro$oft after Claris dropped it,
and it re-emerged as Outlook Express 5 (for Mac was there ever a v4 or
less?), which i used for many moons (too many) and then it was polished up
and repackaged (most re-written i expect) as Entourage which is where i am
now! :)
Apple EOL’d Emailer and wouldn’t/won’t sell it. Several people have tried. Jud Spencer, the original developer for Emailer claims he had the last uncompiled version, and now he can’t find it any more.
You are sorta correct about the Claris --> Entourage connection, but it wasn’t Emailer. It was Jud himself. Jud was (is?) lead developer on the Mac BU of Office, and specifically Entourage. So many familiar features went into Entourage (which is where I am as well after many years on Emailer.) Jud and Will Mayall (another Emailer original, along with Guy Kawasaki, at Fog City before Claris bought it) developed LetterRip as well, which Jud now owns. (Jud also did Date Book, or some such PIM software way back when.)
Chris at mythtech.net has tried many times to update Emailer, and maintains patched versions as well as methods to run it under Intel Macs. That’s an option if you are interested. www/mythtech.net/emailer
