a Chara,my advice would be to shadow read and talk at the same time in your
chosen dialect the stories in easyreader, you need to be on your own at this
activity, it is hard to do at first, but it will get easier as you become
fluent.

Those of us learning Irish without a native Irish Speaker have this common
problem. I've been studying since 1996 and have started taking the Buntús
Cainte course to be a little more consistent with my own pronunciation. Of
course, I've also started the Progress in Irish course which is a little
more advanced (but still review for me).

Of course, when we learned to speak English, we learned one way of
pronouncing things, and that became our "standard" English. In my case, my
family moved from Ohio to Indiana, and Daddy told us, "Now I don't want you
to start talking 'Lahk them heauzhurs,' now, ok?" I was only five and not
yet grounded in a "standard" pronunciation, and I think that's why I'm such
a mimic of accents. I learned it didn't much matter how I said what, people
would understand me.

I'm told the same will apply to Irish. You'll have an accent, and they'll
know your "from off," as they say in another state in which I've lived. But
they should be able to understand you. I greeted friend of mine from Dublin,
"Cad é mar atá tú?" which is common in Ulster. She understood me, but said,
"You might more correctly say, 'Conus tá tú,' and left it at that. The last
time I spoke with her, she understood my curious mix of Ulster and Connacht
just fine, though I did have to repeat myself on occasion and even reword
things a little. I do the same in English, because not everyone in the
mountains of Western North Carolina can understand my
Ohio/Indiana/Virginia/South Carolina mix.

As to the transportability of lessons from Easy Reader, I don't know, never
having tried to do anything that ambitious with it, yet. I do know that it
will import an RTF file really easily, provided the formatting isn't too
complex. I haven't tried to export anything, yet. I'm fairly new to using
ER.

I hope this rambling helps.

Liam,

I am happy that you wrote what you did. Again, if the accent is bent from one
word to another, it throws off the mental interpretation melodically as well as
the mental reception rhythmically of the listener! Were I to say "How are you?"
with each word prnounced in order in Louisiana, Maine and then North Dakota
accents, the mix of the words is not fluent (ie rhythmical as expected) and then
this "choppiness" will distract the listener such that the content is lost, thus
requiring repitition in order to be understood. This is hard both on the speaker
as well as the listener.

I have a very nice set called "Tus Maith" in three volumes that is beautiful but
all in Manx! Then I have "Learning Irish" in Connemaran and, believe it or not,
the Rosetta Stone series that is entirely in Ulster!

I am going to use Easy Reader II for all of my pronunciation in all three of
them (you would not believe how much even Learning I rish has it "wrong" as
well). Easy Reader will be my "measure" of all things whenit comes to pronuncing
words and sentences in Irish. So, I will be working, at first, with one person
for a while, just to get me started and then I will work from there. I also have
all three of the Buntus Caine series and Progress in Irish (if you need all of
the sound files in Connemara dialect for Progress in Irish, as well as work
sheets, I have the complete series!). They are in the public domain and take a
long time to download and to organize well.

Go raibh míle maith agat.

Anyse

Oh, I just put all 15 of Neil McEwan's lessons in ER this evening with all of
the complex layout that includes tables and it works perfectly when one
double-clicks on words, calling up the dictionary as well as automatic
pronunciation. Iff you would like to have ALL of the files sent to you, I can
put them into a zip file for you and also tell you how to add all of them to
your "Lessons" menu.

I also did a long evaluation of how the process of putting these lessons is a
real pain and how Páraic can greatly improve this part of Easy Reader
itself. If you would like to read my notes on this, I would also be more than
happy to share them with you.

Hello everyone,

I am going to work independently to study Irish and I am going to take all of my
own lessons and work them into EasyReader (to be called "Irish for Life" this
spring).

As of yet I do not know about the transportability of lessons written in Irish
for Life and I am hoping that, maybe, someone out there can work with me so that
I can learn how to do all of this and then to pass it on to others.

Páric and I have been talking about my own frustrations with learning Irish
as it has been more than difficult to collate materials from one place to
another. The MAJOR obstacle is the dialects! One program uses Manx in their
recordings, another Connemara and another Ulster and so on. There is absolutely

to Ulster?

Just throwing this out there in the hopes that someone may know of a station on
the internet that has "standard" Irish or only one dialect upon which I may
depend.

To be honest, this has set back my learning of Irish over 9 months. I need to
know sources that I can use that will be "consistent." Any ideas are welcome!

Thank you all so much.

My EasyReader worked great on my XP until my XP died. I now have a Vista. I
loaded EasyReader (Patrick says that it loaded and was activated.) and I now
seem to have the proper permissions. I think I have everything working, but the
update part. When I click on "update now", nothing happens. Anyone know how to
fix this? I gave up trying to get through to Microsoft Support. I did get
through to the New Delhi Microsoft Support Group, but they just kept telling me
to log onto Microsoft Support. I think Microsoft has finally figured out a way
to keep users from bothering them.

My copy of Easy Reader has the serial number sellotaped onto the case underneath
the actual disk. I got it at the very beginning - 2004?

I think most copies of ER sold had an A4 sheet supplied with them with
instructions and the serial no.

I have tried to use Writer "as gaeilge" in Open Office but have found
that Easy Reader does not work when trying to click on words in a
document to help in translation. This works fine in Microsoft Word. I
also have the Gaelspell dictionary installed in Word so may just stick
to that but if anyone has any suggestions I would be grateful.

Great news!! The problem I was having with my computer WAS NOT DUE TO
THE EASY READER PROGRAM, but a problem with the Microsoft Windows Vista
operating system. You need to go to your permissions file and give
permission to the users of the system. Problem resolved. a Phadraig,

Well, great news! The problem wasn't because of the Easy Reader
program. It was a problem with the permissions and the Windows Vista
operating system. Get into the permissions file and allow the
permissions and the problem should be resolved. Thank You so much
Patrick!!!

A Mhíchíl, I have got it to work by setting the codepage for non-Unicode
programmes to English (I am living in China and using Chinese windows),
otherwise it wouldn't work, even in the programme itself. But it works now.
I hope the next version will be Unicode!! Thanks.

Clicking on the little keyboard icon beside the mouse icon until it
reads 'AA' will give you a normal keyboard.
Setting it to 'Á' should give you vowels with fadas when you double
strike a vowel,
This is where it get's complicated!
This feature should work perfectly in the Easyreader built in Word
Processor.
If you're using Easyreader with other programs how well this feature
performs depends on a lot of factors: The program, it's version, the
OS (I think) and what country your computer thinks it's in!(really).

Try it out with a few different programs and confirm the info above
on what works and what doesn't.

My serial number has been sorted out now. But I still have a problem: how to
type with the traditional keyboard. When I doublestrike a vowel, the vowel
just disappears, and the same happens to a consonant if I append an h. is
this a problem anyone recognizes?

David

I believe the way easyreader registers has changed over the years. If
you bought yours 2-3 years ago you are likely to have been affected.

If you email your info below together with your serial number to:
support@irishforlif <mailto:support%40irishforlife.com> e.com I'm sure
they'll set you up with a working
lisence.
You should have the version 1 and version 2 files in the same
c:\program files\reader directory.
