In addition to the very effective extension approach, can do same in native
ecco.

alternate solution is:

Let's say you want to search for every item that contains the text "this" and
"is" and "cool".

Step 1. Search for all the items containing the term "this" -- selecting in
the full search dialog to search the ENTIRE FILE and to post the results in a
new tab and REPLACE the existing results.

Step 2. Search file for all items , but this time, search IN CURRENT VIEW, but
still with results in a new tab and REPLACE the existing results.

Step 3... Same as step 2 for additional exclusion terms.

Simple and effective.

One way to do so is to use EccoExt and new auto-assign rules.

You can create a new folder put there a rule, something like
++:+I::ITT~='string1' AND ITT~='string2' AND ITT~='string3'

and run Check Folder Rules from the context menu (right-click the folder). All
items satisfying the criteria will be in the folder.

And you can use Regular Expressions in new rules.

Is it possible to get Ecco display a grid of all items where ItemText
contains "string1" and "string2" and "string3"?

It seems that the Find function does not support entry of multiple
search strings. And the Filters function does not support filtering on
the Item Text, only columns.

1. The community based program findings idea is pretty cool. For those loading
software a few weeks after everyone else does, likely an effective strategy for
those who would be otherwise clueless in determining if some particular software
was safe or not. Curious to see how it will be rated by 'official' testing this
year.

2. Avira FREE is a nice enough antivirus for those looking. On my own system I
don't usually have the antivirus turned on-- I trust myself not to run .exe
programs that come via email without first testing them manually. (and I run
unknown programs in a sandbox to test them generally). Web browsers seem much
more secure than the days when websites could take over your system... so,
not so sure about how helpful web pre surfing is. (Other may have stories to
share that might change that view).

When I do have AV 'ON' it is only checking (my config) when executable programs
are WRITTEN.

ps: Avira is not 'problem free'.... it also wants (unless told not to) to
automatically remove a wholly innocent program or two.

I agree that Norton NAV/NIS used to be over-bloated, and I wouldn't touch them
with a stick!

However, the new 2009 & 2010 versions are completely different animals. 2010
versions added Sonar which uses a new detection technique *partly* based on
"community" uses & findings of a program.

There was apparently a bug in the program that made the detection recurrent for
*some* users. I fixed it on my system by a "hot-fix".

In any case, I submitted info about eccoext.eco to Symantec, and the following
day (today), I received the E-mail below. I am very susprised (and pleased)
about the quick response/action.

Eccoext should no longer be detected by NIS/NAV 2010 as a threat!

======================
We are writing in relation to your submission through Symantec's on-line
Security Risk Dispute Submission form for the eccoext.exe software being
detected by Symantec Software. In light of further investigation and analysis
Symantec is happy to remove this detection from within its products.
The updated detection will be distributed in the next set of virus definitions,
available daily, or weekly via LiveUpdate, depending on Symantec product
version, or daily from our website at

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html.

Decisions made by Symantec are subject to change if alterations to the Software
are made over time or as classification criteria and/or the policy employed by
Symantec changes over time to address the evolving landscape.

TrenMicro's Internet Security the low-cost consumer version let you do
that ($49.95 online with a license for three systems). It is pretty
fast with no system slow down. We found out years ago Norton is not
only bloated (the same is McAfee) but we had constant customer request
for help uninstalling that stupid program. For a small business (1-20
stations) we recommend TrendMicro's Worry-Free Business Security
installed on the central server, updating the data files and controlling
the network, remote clients and all local workstations from there. We
use it to cover all of our servers and workstations (about $124.00 for
single server and 4 workstations per year).

I had the same problem with McAffee, and switched to Vipre. I am happy
to say Vipre is everything they say it is and more. It works well with
ECCOext as well.

The new Sonar constantly deletes eccoext.exe. I tell Norton to restore the file
and exclude it from future Sonar scans. The file is then restored, but it can
not be executed since Norton locks the file. A few minutes later Sonar deletes

sure hope you'll post a "step-by-step" of *SPECIFICALLY* what you did to
successfully sync your ecco file with motionapps on the Pree.

Would be helpful to many, expect.

When I type vizapp meant you of course, "vizacc" ....

and I think your success proves exactly the point of the HUGE amount of work in
building the framework for an ecco replacement. The existing controls (for
most part, eg., there are some nice calendar controls, etc. on market that can
be used) ESPECIALLY FOR OUTLINE!! don't cut it-- requires 'lower' level
development as vizapp has invested a VERY HUGE EFFORT into.

which was the core at the point was making. Note that the SQLNotes/InfoQube
development also has involved a clearly huge effort, and that shows in the look
and conceptual design (which I think is proving itself in the field), but
still needs a HUGE effort to create the basic controls (such as advanced WSIWYG
outline control) which ecco 2 would/will involve.

Yes. In either case you have to adjust the Hotsync Manager "Settings"
for "Applications" and set the actions for the corresponding native Palm
Desktop applications to "Do nothing" if you sync with EccoPro and you do
the same i.e. set the corresponding EccoPro (or Outlook) applications to
"Do nothing" when synching with the native Palm Desktop applications to
prevent a conflict with Hotsync Manager. To make your choices
?effortless we renamed all EccoPro applications during the install.

Would your approach also allow use of Palm Desktop and Palm to Outlook Synch as
well as to Ecco? In other words, could your changes allow me to sync from Ecco
to Palm phone, Palm phone to Palm Desktop and/or Palm Phone to Outlook for
calendar as well as Contacts. The goal to to sync between Ecco and Google.
Efforts to export Ecco csv files and upload to Google have been unsuccessful.

Gary ...

While you were testing the Classic Hotsync did you had to adjust the
Hotsync Manager "Settings" for "Applications" and set the actions for
the corresponding Palm Desktop applications to "Do nothing" to prevent a
conflict or crash of Hotsync Manager?

We're not part of Pierre's Landry InfoQube, we write separate
application.

Our product edits directly into XML base and editing is What You see
is what you get. You can see Bold, Italic, Underline directly. We
spent 2 months doing the style editor.

There is much work to do. Looking at Spider Monkey or
Chrome V8 JavaScript Engine embedding at this moment.

That will depend... We wrote our calendar, address-book and outliner
from ground-up, and many others from ground-up.

That means, we have 100% full source code for all libraries that
goes into our application.

Anyone who wishes to write "alternative" will have very hard time,
very hard time...

Thanks Gary for uploading the PDFs.

Please do not take the quote below out of context. The full version reads:

The long overlooked simple beauty is the ECCO dll's (the Palm conduits)
don't have to be in the Palm Folder and renaming the Registry
application entries to 0,1,2 and 3 is also unnecessary as long as you
give them a number high enough to cover any possible other applications
installations. Following that thought, you are able to design the
EccoPro setup without the need to edit the Registry. Any Palm Desktop
installation after the EccoPro installation will simply add/re-adjust
the U.S.Robotics Registry entries with their native applications.
You just install EccoPro, that's it, it is that simple. You don't have
to add any Ecco conduits or edit the Windows Registry should you later
decide to sync Ecco with your Palm device.

The word "extends" is misleading. I successfully made my ECCO file
synch with MotionApps on a Palm Pree and did not have to use anything
that Compusol did or provided.

Its a simple matter of having the right registry settings and putting
the necessary ECCO dll files into the palm folder on your PC.

>>> can you sync the calendar?

MotionApps Classic synchronizes ALL FOUR of the synch-capable ECCO Pro modules:
PhoneBook, Calendar, ToDo, Memos. That said, MotionApps Classic synchronizes
these to the corresponding Palm Classic application. NOTE, however, that the
four Palm Classic applications do NOT synchronize with the Pre's webOS versions
of these apps. Thus you can have a gmail account's inbox, contacts and calendar
all synched up on your Pre, having no effect whatsoever on the ECCO data you've
synched to the Pre, and vice versa.

Infoqube (fka SQLNotes) is very pleasing to the eye, but needs still maybe a
lot to be a compatible replacement.

First of all, don't see that there is actually a calendar working yet...

Secondly, very had for many to comfortably and happily edit text that looks
like " <b>this</b> is important "...

mighty impressive what infoqube has done, but (and this I think is the central
problem with ecco replacing) a HUGE AMOUNT of work is left...

on the other hand vizapp has been busy for a long time on actual compatible
replacement. Struggling with calendar features, etc etc etc.

unknown status of actual interactivity of the outline itself, also data
security and things like that, but overall...

some amazing stuff around the corner, but takes a HUGE amount of work, so...
patience...

also note that Slang has added some powers which will allow ACTUAL ability to
port ecco data INCLUDING FORMATTING !!!!

which maybe ?? InfoQube will add soon (?) and which looks like vizapp is
getting close to perfection with the new viz app.

We do not exactly have road-map, but

- We did private sessions/ web-meetings in past few weeks.

- Effort is being done to make import accurate.

- Adding necessary features/ fixes to make work-flow easier.

In fact, most of ecco "internal numbers" and "values" transfer 1:1
into our product.

Thank you

Don, I'm using the Pre's contact application as my speed dial
list. If I would have had a person on my Treo's speed dial then I
call them a lot. I only have to receive or send one phone call for the
paerson to be in the dialer's call log. From the Pre dialer call
log there is a very simple function that enables you to add that phone
number as a new Pre contact, OR add the number to an existing Pre
contact. Same is true of sending text messages. MotionApps
"sees" a mobile number as have both dialing capability, and
automatically copies the number over into SMS field.

Yes you can search all of the the MotionApps data bases by any string
you want. It's a basic function off the home screen of the
MationApps Classic app menu. It waS A BASIC FUNCTION ON THE Palm Treo as
well.

Gary, did you do this manually or were you able to somehow copy and
paste over from the Motion Apps Classic phonebook?

Also, just curious, but is it possible to search the contacts by first
name in the Pre? I have an old Palm Tungsten and one frustration I have
is when I can remember a contact's first name but not last name -- makes
it almost impossible to find.

OK things are going along very nicely. In less than a week I've adapted
to the Pre's keyboard and I'm quite pleased with it.

As to integrating ECCO contacts and the dialer - the catch appears to be
that you look the contact up in MotionApps Palm Classic first. Then you
find a new icon on the Palm contact screen that facilitates dialing via
the pre. In effect this means you will abandon the contacts application
that the Pre's dialer uses and instead go directly to the Palm Contacts
application in Classic when you want to dial. I've also added some of
my most common contacts to the Pre's contact list.
