Folks,
So far, I've got this set up to send everyone an e-mail message when
anyone sends a message to the group -- that's right, it'll work just
like a "mailing list," too. That sounds good to me -- I don't recall
ever seeing an "ECCO mailing list" before, and it might be more
convenient for a lot of folks.
Let me know what you think -- I can always change that if a majority of
folks would rather not see these messages in their e-mail. I'll
certainly try to be responsive to the groups members!

Folks,
Well, I guess I ought to do one of these...
This group is not associated with NetManage, Inc. in any way. The ECCO
Pro trademark is a NetManage copyright. The intent of this group is to
provide a resource for independent discussion of ECCO Pro by its
faithful users. Should NetManage, Inc. object to the use of the ECCO
Pro trademark in the course of the discussions in this group, I'll shut
it down so fast it'll make your head spin!

I'm so glad you started this group, Tom. I have been enjoying your
posts on various forums for several years. I look for help to continue
using Ecco. It helps me run my business like no other program.
Thanks, Tom.
I, too, am welcoming this newsgroup and URL. The more chances we have
to spread the gospel of ECCO, the more likely it will be to survive.

Having the mail appear in my email is perfect for me.

Folks,
Thanks for coming on board! Sorry I've been a little late in getting
back to you today -- I had a meeting right after work that should have
been about a half-hour, but it turned out to be a three-hour marathon!
Don't you just hate it when "life" starts interfering with your
computer fun? <g>
At any rate, I appreciate your membership in the ECCO Pro group, and I
hope we can have some great discussions and swap some valuable
information here! Which reminds me, maybe I'd better start adding a
link to my web site in my posts, so you can have that close at hand.
Unfortunately, I seem to have dropped of the planet,
search-engine-wise, since I got my cable modem and its "@Home" ISP.
Even though I've submitted my URL's to a number of search engines, it
just seems that they just don't index the @Home sites or something to
that effect, so I'm definitely a little harder to find on the 'net
these days! At any rate, if you don't have my "ECCO Assistance" URL
handy, here it is:
http://www.members.home.net/eccotom
Sure, I haven't changed a thing in several months, but I've still got
my tutorials up there, my sample files, and the instructions you'll
need to get a Palm or Visor unit synching with ECCO.
Again, thanks for coming on board, and we'll talk to you later!

Tom, beware of intruders when you connect via cable!
Do you have NetworkIce.com's Black Ice Defender
or some such for a shield?

Ahhh, you bet! After getting the cable modem, I started frequenting
@Home's "security" newsgroup, and it seemed that the "AtGuard"
personal firewall was the most highly-regarded program by the folks in
the group. I have been running it ever since, and I believe it does a
very good job! Symantec apparently "bought" it or "licensed" it, and
it soon will show up as the main part of "Norton Security Suite 2000"
or some such similar name.
I also keep my background anti-virus program running all the time,
and, between them, I think I'm doing just fine. I also avoid the
Microsoft e-mail applications, preferring instead a little yet
full-featured program named "The Bat!," which doesn't "run active
applications" in e-mail messages. For instance, if you get an "HTML
mail message," usually the images in that message aren't sent to you
-- they are active links to graphics files on remote servers. "The
Bat!" won't even download those so you can see them. Which is just
fine with me!
In the end, I think I've got my system pretty well protected from the
"bad guys" out on the 'net! <g>

Tom,
so far I haven't gotten any email from this group. Not that there've
been many messages, but I was wondering if I need to configure anything
on my end.

Folks,
Just a test here, in response to Tom Holman's message:
ttc> So far I haven't gotten any email from this group. Not that
ttc> there've been many messages, but I was wondering if I need to

There shouldn't be anything for anyone to "configure," but you need to
be "registered" with eGroups as a member of the group in order to get
the messages e-mailed to you. (Otherwise, eGroups doesn't know to
send anything to you!) If you have signed up as a member of the
group, then you should be getting a copy of each message posted to the
group. I'm hoping the case is that you just haven't registered, or
maybe we just haven't had any new messages since you signed up!
I hope this helps, and let us know how it goes!

Hello,
My Pilot To Do app has become intolerably slow,
probably because I'm
carrying around over 2 years worth of To Dos in there.
I've consulted the
Ecco help file on how to archive older to dos so they
don't synch with the
Pilot.
However, the procedure seems incredibly time
consuming: you have to check
each and every To Do thay you don't want synched?
Is there a faster way to do this that I'm overlooking?
Will deleting the To
Dos on the pilot while checking the "archive on PC"
box have the same impact
as checking the Pilot archive column in the To Do
notebook?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I use DateBk3 for my Palm todos and calendar. Here I can say that "done"
items do not show. Also, I have an undone folder in ECCO that I have a
Pilot Archive column in. I auto assign the Pilot ARchive column as checked
when I check an item in ECCO as "done." (See auto assign rules in
ECCO--they are great timesavers.

Tom,
Is there any way to receive a "digest" version of the messages from the
group? I can see that if traffic increases, it could be a real problem for
those of us who get a massive number of messages each day. I like to read
this stuff at my leisure and it is easier to handle in diget form.
Thanks for listening.

Not that I'm aware of, but I'll see what I can do! Of course, you can
always filter your incoming messages into a different folder
(presuming your mail program can do that), and then just browse
through the messages on the eGroups web page when you've got the time.
Again, I'll check things out more thoroughly, but I think that may be
the closest we can get to a "digest version" at this point!
I'll let you know what I find out!
Best regards,

Yeah, I know that I can apply a filter. It does however, add a nuisance
factor to open file after file when you can read a lot of messages in one
big swoop in a single file.
Most digests work on a daily or weekly compilation. Daily means, of couse,
that problems will be answered in a more timely manner. Most mailing lists
give the choice of single message receipts and digests.

Tom,
I think your idea of carrying on where the Clicksright forum left off
is a great idea! I think the NM newsgroups are great. But I also
think it's good to have an independent source of info. I put the link
to your eGroup on my IE5 links bar (only the important ones go there!).
I don't use Ecco as much I used to, since I'm enveloped in an
Outlook-centric world. But I regularly 'lurk' in the NM newsgroups and
enjoy reading discussions about Ecco. Ecco is still one of my all-time
favorite programs. I've found it very satisfying to use. I have to
admit that Outlook has a lot of power, but I always find myself working
hard to get things done with it. Beyond that, I just plain DISLIKE it.
But it gets the job done, and it's what most of the corporate world is
using these days. I'm always toying with the idea of going back to
Ecco for my personal stuff, but I like to have both business and
personal stuff together, and I really haven't seen a good way to
integrate Ecco & Outlook. Launching an e-mail client from within Ecco
just isn't enough. Sigh.
That's it... I hope your eGroup thrives!

Right. I've checked into the eGroups options, though, and I definitely
don't have any option to send messages in a combined digest format,
sorry to say! All I can do is either have "replies to messages" sent
to everyone, or just to the original sender. And, of course, I've got
that set to "send them to everyone." Perhaps they'll add that option
some day, but I don't think I'd advise holding your breath waiting for
that to happen!
I'll continue to monitor how folks feel about getting all the messages
generated by this group -- if a majority would rather not get them all
via mail, I'll make that change!
Hope that helps -- take care!

It would be nice to get a collective wish list going. To hear the
pro's express their opinions would certainly help me understand the
underlying philosophy of time and information management built into
ECCO. Steve.

I'm not that familiar with the auto assign stuff. Most likely,
though, you'd wind up assigning =everything= to the "Pilot Archive"
folder, which isn't what you'd want to do, either. I think doing the
form and just selecting a whole bunch and "letting them have it" in
one full swoop will be the best way to go. Just sort 'em by date,
select all the old ones, and be done with them! <g>
Good luck with it!

Hi,
I was somewhat impressed with ACT! in it's contact management
features but then reminded myself that ECCO could obviously be built
into something more versitle and customized to my particular needs so
I'm just polling for suggestions or a template that anybody might want
to share. I want to track interactions with the various people I do
web design for (phone calls, letters received, meeting notes, emails,
billable time, etc). This is probably too big an order to handle with
a simple reply buy I'm trying to build a knowledge base from which I'll
eventually construct a History tracking tool. Thank you, Steve.
On TH's advice, I installed the PalmConnect USB kit from Palm
Accessories. Damn, it's nice when something works. Plugged it in to
Windows 98 computer and it immediately recognized it. I pointed to the
"inf" file on the CD and that was it! Popped the Palm in the cradle
and it worked flawlessly.
It's an elegant solution, especially for us with only one com port who
desire to synch email thru the dialup.
