Goals of ECoMAS

The EcoMAS Group supports dialogue among researchers and practitioners who are examining Evolutionary Computation [EC] in Multi-agent Systems [MAS].

It is an opportunity for those active or interested in this area to hear about current work, discuss future directions and priorities, and form invaluable research contacts.

Why EC and MAS

Organisms are a rich source of inspiration for engineers. Their operation has been fine tuned over thousands of years leading to astonishingly efficient behaviours, mechanisms and materials. Employing evolution in the design of artefacts goes still further, allowing us to harness the process which gave rise to the diversity we see around us.

With the advance of computational power and communications speed, we live in a world where many software agents are working on our behalf. Agents may collaborate with those of other users, while spawning and managing agents of their own.

Software agents and organisms have much in common. They are autonomous and goal-oriented. They must cope with changing demands, and varying resource availability. They negotiate relationships for mutual benefit and exploitation. They may succeed. They may fail.

In biological and social systems many interacting components are co-ordinated to achieve a well-defined objective - a proof of concept for the use of evolution to generate scalable, stable control architectures exploiting complex couplings between system components.
