Carey Island is one of 8 mangrove islands of the Klang-Langat Delta. The
island is now an
oil palm plantation managed by Sime Darby, and currently being developed as
an eco-
plantation destination for tourism. The surrounding islands, including Pulau
Tengah and
Pulau Kelang, have significant mangrove cover, and are important to
migratory birds.
Mangrove Research Centre is the brainchild of the Institute of Biological
Sciences,
University of Malaya and Sime Darby Plantation. It was established in 2007
as a centre
dedicated to mangrove and coastal ecosystem research. It has dry and wet
laboratories,
meeting and seminar rooms.
Objectives of Workshop
¡ã To provide knowledge and create awareness ofthe values and services of the
mangrove
ecosystem
¡ã To train stakeholders on assessment andvaluation techniques of mangrove
resources
and services
¡ã To equip stakeholders on the availablemethods of mangrove rehabilitation
vis-a-vis
shoreline protection
The major themes of the training programme are:
¡ã Assessment of mangrove biodiversity for mangrove flora and fauna.
¡ã Valuation of mangrove goods and services
¡ã Mangrove forest mapping using Geographical
Information System
¡ã Coastal eco-engineering methods for mangrove rehabilitation
