Well, I decided to jump in head first and go into the RegEdit to see if I could
fix this. Under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared\HTML],
I found an entry for the Default Editor. It was set to WINWORD. So, I copied the
entry from EditPlus and pasted it into the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Shared\HTML\Default
Editor\shell\Edit\command]. I set the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\...\ddeexec\Application] to EditPlus. Closed RegEdit and
tried a right-click and selecting Edit. The file opened in EditPlus.

Whether this was the 'correct' place to make the changes, I'm not sure; but it
worked. In case this is helpful to others, I posted the registration file.

Thanks.

When I choose Edit, Win7 opens Word2003! In WinXP, it was possible to set the
various menu actions (i.e., Open, Edit, etc.); but I haven't found where these
can be set in Win7!

Hi!

Is there any other way of accessing this file than via Yahoo Groups. I do
not have a Yahoo account. The EditPlus website has a "User's Files" section;
would it be possible to place it there or perhaps just e-mail it to me.

Regards,
Peter

I haven't had a chance to test Windows 7 thoroughly yet... but something
makes me believe that instead of RegEdit, you could have done this via the
Control Panel under "programs" and the file type associations link. There
you could select ".html" and make EditPlus the default program. Plus you
can make it the default for .txt, .cpp, .h, .sql, and other file types you
wish.

Hope that helps.

No that would stop htm or other files the see EditPlus as the default program
from opening in the desired default programs (i.e., htm = firefox/IE; txt =
TextPad/etc.). I just want to define the Edit choice on the right-click as
EditPlus instead of M$Word. M$ thinks Word is the best editor for HTML doc. I do
not agree! :-]

I just converted to edit plus from ultraedit. Ultraedit was getting on my nerves
where all their bugs on the editory. But I miss their "Column Mode" Setting..
ALLOT:(

I know that edit Plus has it, but it is a cumbersome way to do it.

Disable wordwarp and hold alt button while drag, you will get column mode
selection.

I know, But it does not stay in Column Mode Edit. I then have to go back to menu
to do fill in. I was just suggesting, that maybe you can take a look at Ultra
edit Column Mode for inspiration. I do not like ultra edit, but some few basic
features are done nicely.

Also when doing a Find, I need to highlight the word before clicking on ctrl-f
to have it automatically filled into the "fine-what" input box,and that is fine,
specially if one wants to find multi-word combo as in "hello world". But it
would be nice if I just clicked ctrl-f and it would automatically take the whole
word that the cursor is on, if focus is indeed on a word.

I looked at the help file for UltraEdit, and the column or block edit mode has
some nice functionality. (For lurkers: The help file is a PDF available from the
UltrEdit web site.) I'm guessing that it would take a significant amount of
extra code to add that functionality to EditPlus. Would it be worth it to me? I
think so, but I'm not positive.

I'm guessing that the enhancement to the find dialog box would be trivial. I'd
like to see it.

i'd prefer to have the find box retain the last search unless you have
something actually highlighted. i wouldn't want to hit ctrl-f only to
find that because my cursor was on some random word it's replaced my
carefully crafted regular expression...

i don't have much use for block mode so on the fence on that one.
however, given that editplus can already insert clipboard text in a
kind of "column mode", i shouldn't think that implementing ultraedit's
additional functionality would be too much of a stretch. for example
inserting the same character in the same position on a number of lines
at a basic implementation would be as simple as internally creating a
clipboard structure with that character over the number of lines, then
inserting it into the document as EP can already do.

would it be worth it to me? probably only to prove i'm right ;-)

You're right about the find dialog box. Can I change my vote <g>?

I hope that you're right about the effort that you're right about the level of
effort to implement the block mode features, but there seems to be a lot more
than clipboard functionality: column number selection through dialog boxes,
sequential number insertion, etc.

Now that I think about it, I'm working with text files in Excel for some of the
functionality in UltraEdit. However, this doesn't happen very often, so I guess
that I wouldn't use these features very often in EditPlus.

I admit that I'm not a member of the "do everything in your text editor" camp.

At moment the Home key takes me to the beginning of line.
It would be nice if...
The home key took me to the First character found on that line
maybe hitting the home key a second time would then take me to the beginning of

Subject: Feature request : Close other tabs keeping more than one

Hello,

I would like to add a feature request to EditPlus :

As it is very common (at least for me) to have many text windows opened at the
same time, I would like to be able to close most of them, keeping only the ones
on which I still need to work.

Of course there is already a "Close Others" context menu item that I can use by
right-clicking on the tab of the document that I want to keep.

But this only allows keeping ONE document. I would like to be able to keep more
than one.

That's why I suggest adding two more commands to the tab's context menu item :
(1) Close right (tabs or windows or documents)
(2) Close left (tabs or windows or documents)

By using these commands, all documents located on the right or on the left of
the current ones, from the tabs point of view, would be closed, leaving all
other documents open.

As it is already possible do move documents on the tab bar by dragging them,
this would make easy to organize a group of documents to keep open, and next
using one of these two commands for closing all other documents.

I like this feature request. I would use it. I currently have EditPlus open
with 21 documents open. They are all pretty much not related to each other,
and are there as reminders to me of things I need to do, or that I work on
from time to time. When I open new things, they automatically are added on
the right, and usually I want to close those before the others since the
others are kind of always open. A Close Right command would close them all
at once.

Closing multiple documents at once becomes more organized if you put your
documents into a project and then close the project when you are done with
it, but it isn't so easy to setup the projects with the documents all in the
right order, and it is even harder to categorize everything I'm working on
into projects. Adding a Close Right and Close Left would help when I haven't
put everything into projects.

Thanks,
Daniel

Here's a quick and dirty work-around:
1. Open up the Window List (F11).
2. Drag+Select (SHIFT+ARROW) the list of windows you want to close
3. Click the "Close Window(s)" button (ALT+C).

I forgot to mention that one of the nifty things about the Window List
is that the active window is hightlighted, so you can SHIFT+PAGEUP or
SHIFT+PAGEDOWN from there to select and close to the left or right of
the active window.

Related to the Window List:
That is a pretty sweet feature that I didn't know of, and will make it
easier to manage documents.
Is there a shortcut button to the window list that can be added to the icon
bar? I don't see one. I think if that was there, more people would remember
the feature.

Now that I know that the Window List is available with those features on it,
I think it would be pretty easy to add the Close Right and Close Left
commands. It seems there is code structure in more than one area that could
be used to implement the new feature (you could also loop through the tabs
somehow I'm sure).

I still would find Close Right and Close Left useful.

Hello,

I didn't know that feature either.

Thank you very much for your reply.

My feature request is still valid (such commands would be probably faster
anyway), but I have to experiment a little this one in order to see how they are
practical.

Thank you. A little late but I forgot that I asked the question.

That is what I was looking for.

Hello

After some tries, I think now that this is not as practical as it could
be, because it allows only closing of selected windows, whereas my
request was about closing windows except some selected ones.

So I think that the "windows list" dialog would need at least
one of the following additions:

     * A button for closing unselected windows, and/or
     * A button for inverting the current selection.

As mentioned in my comment, what I offered was a "work-around" to allow
you to close more than one window at a time, in spite of the
functionality you wanted not being available. I never suggested it to
be a replacement for your request.

Your request has merit, but until such time comes when it is finally
implemented (if indeed it ever is), it's all you have. That, or closing
windows one at a time.

Hit F11 and then hit CTL+A to select all. Then, while holding the control key,
select all the ones you want to keep open. That will deselect all the items you
want to keep open.

Hi

I am new to Edit plus. I saved an SPSS file as a ASCII. In this file i have a
column where the IDs are saved (ex : 126421830376478.00 ) but edit plus will
only show 1E+014.

How can i see the full ID ?

Thanks !

Although I'm sure I don't know what an SPSS file is, I think the problem you
are having is having to do with the conversion into ASCII from whatever SPSS
is. The reason I say that is that EditPlus is a straight text editor; it
doesn't convert numbers to look different than what they are actually saved
as.

In other words, it is Notepad for Windows on Steroids. What you see in
Notepad or Editplus is the straight text as saved in the document; (except
in EditPlus's case, it is a syntax-highlighted and character enhanced
rendering of the straight text).

So, the problem you are having is probably in the file before it reaches
EditPlus. Hopefully you have a way of exporting to ASCII without the number
conversion.

Thanks,
Daniel

I agee with the other reply.

If possible, define the ID field as string or text. Many programs export text as
comma or tab delimited with quotes wrapping the text fields. I have the same
problem trying to get Excel to save addresses as CSV (Comma delimited SaVe) as
the zip code often loses the "0".

Hope this is helpful!

Hi,

As far as I can tell, CTRL+A doesn't work in the "Window List".
At least not on Windows XP. Perhaps the native windows list control
has been enhanced to support CTRL+A on Windows Vista or Windows 7?
I wouldn't know... But, there is yet another workaround.

HOW TO CLOSE ALL EXCEPT SELECTED WINDOWS

     - Hit F11 to open the "Window List".
     - Hit HOME, SHIFT+END, to select everything on the list.
     - Now, click CTRL+LEFT MOUSE BUTTON to deselect the documents you wish
       to keep open.
     - Click "Close Windows" (or just ALT+C).

MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE DOCUMENT SELECTOR

I personally never keep the "Document Selector" visible, because it
isn't very useful to see the document selector tabs when you have
50-100 documents open at the same time - the tabs just take up
     valuable screen estate.

I recommend using the "Window List" and the "Find in Files" features
     instead.

EditPlus is ALMOST a perfect IDE for Python (and I guess other
programming languages). It seems to have a significant deficiency in
that the Output Window cannot accept user input. The following Python
program is an example (its Python 3 for those using older versions). The
line "a, b, c - eval(input..." is looking for input from the user,

Listed below the Python script are the outputs from EditPlus (which
seems not to accept user input) and Sc1/Scite which does accept user input.

Am I missing something with EditPlus or is this feature not supported.
If it is not supported is it possible to ask for it to be considered for
a future version (it really would be worthwhile).

Regards,
Peter

Subject: Auto-indent turns spaces into a tab.
scottslocum002

I did a fresh EditPlus installation today on a replacement hard drive, and it's
doing something different in the way it auto-indents spaces (in a textfile or
Perl script).

When the number of spaces on the previous line equals the "tab/indent" setting
in the "preferences" for "settings and syntax", EditPlus is beginning the new,
auto-indented line with a tab rather than the spaces.

For instance, if the "tab/indent" setting is "4" and line 1 starts with three
spaces (with a word following them), then the new line 2 (after typing a word or
a space on it) also begins with three spaces, as expected. But with the same
"tab/indent" setting of "4", if line 1 starts with four spaces, the new line 2
(after typing a word or a space on it) begins with a tab.

Can anyone tell me what preference to set so that the new, auto-indented line
starts with the same leading spaces as the previous line?

Thanks.
