2003 marks the 50th Anniversary of the (modern) discovery of
REM. Actually, I see that the paper was published September 4, 1953 by
Eugene Aserinsky and Nathaniel Kleitman in volume 118 of Science. As
several people have pointed out, Aristotle and many others noted that
people's eyes roll around during sleep. But our current out-pouring of
research can be traced to the nights in the Chicago lab where sleep
researchers were closely watching and reporting dreams from REM sleep. In
memorial, Electric Dreams will have a larger percentage of dream science
articles for the year, though our focus will remain on dreamwork.

To start things off, I thought I would really get to the source and include
an article on the evolution of REM in animals. This article will take you
back 300 million years to the beginning of mammals and all the questions
about why mammals exhibit REM dreaming. Be sure to read "The Evolution of
REM Dreaming: New Research Includes All Mammals."

Lucy Gillis offers a selection from the Lucid Dream Exchange this month on
lucid dreams and religious experience. The essay is from Linda Magallón
regarding secular spirituality and how people experience this in lucid and
psi dreaming.

Linda also offers us this month an excerpt from "How to Fly" on recalling
dreams that want to slip away and how to not only enhance our recall, but
how to bring out even the most subtle of dream fragments. All this and
more in "Dream Flow and Fragments."

Jean Campbell continues to be a key player in 21st Century dream activism
and this month has an update from the most active online project, the World
Dreams Peace Bridge. In "A View from the Bridge" Jean describes current
projects and how you can participate. There is also information about the
new website worlddreamspeacebridge.org

I'm included a dream in the main section by Stan Kulikowski II. We
usually print Stan's dreams in the dream section and you can find previous
dreams of his in past issues under his name. I wanted to bring out his
dream to give people an idea of the care that can be put into writing up
one's dreams. Be sure to read his dream: "A Question of Religion"

I have been looking at dream cards and I'm including a few of the reviews
here each month in 2003. Thanks to Jill Gregory and the Dream Library and
Archive for supplying all the materials for the research.

The Dream Section, beautifully edited by Elizabeth Westlake [with the help
of Harry Bosma's editor program], is full of dreams sent in to us over the
last month. A murder in the garden of love, teeth falling out, a man shows
up at the farm with a woman who means nothing to him. All these dreams and
more await you in the Dream Section!

If you have dreams you want published, don't send them to Elizabeth
directly, but rather enter them in the form at
http://www.dreamgate.com/dream/temple
Or you can put them in the dream flow directly by subscribing
to: dream-flow-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

We don't send the cover with the e-zine, but you can view, download and
print up a copy anytime at:

ART AND MULTIMEDIA SHOWS

DREAM FILM FESTIVAL: At this year's conference, we will offer an expanded
dream film festival ( we supply the popcorn!) with nearly continuous
showings of feature and documentary films. With the help of dream film

dream-oriented films ranging from Le Guin's, The Lathe of Heaven, to
Bunuel, Hitchcock, Sayles, Dr. Suess, the Rugrats, Star Trek episodes and
much more. Highly requested documentaries such as the Wise Old Dog, The
Power of Dreams, and Goodnight Moon will also be included.

SUNSET DREAM CRUISE ON THE BAY: As a special treat at this year's
conference, we will offer a cruise on the San Francisco Bay. From a dock,
right at our hotel, we will set sail into the sunset to savor the
spectacular views, and the sights and sounds of the bay. This is a rare
opportunity to share an evening with friends and colleagues from the
conference.

CE PROGRAM: We will be offering 30 Continuing Education (CE) Credits from
the ASD Dream Studies Continuing Education Program which will include
in-depth clinical and interpretive workshops with Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D.;
Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D.; Ernest Hartmann, M.D. Alan Siegel, Ph.D.; Roger

>>>> CALL FOR ENTRIES ** 2003 Dream Art Exhibition
** Association for the
Study of Dreams

Eligibility: Original work in any medium about or inspired by dreams.

Presentation: This year's exhibition will have two components:

1) A web-based show that will premiere on the ASD web site to coincide with
the 20th Annual Conference of the Association for the Study of Dreams in
Berkeley, CA, June 27 - July 1, 2003.

2) An on-site exhibition of selected works from the web show, to be
displayed at the Radisson Hotel in Berkeley, California, during the conference.

NOTE: Because there is no gallery space at the hotel, we can only display a
small number of works in one of the conference rooms. We do not know at
this time what the exhibit space will be like, or how many works we will be
able to show. In the entry form, you will be asked to indicate whether you
want your work to be considered for the on-site show. All entries will be
considered for the web show.
ALSO NOTE: Slides of works accepted for the web show may be shown as part
of a talk at the conference, or as part of an installation in the exhibit
space.

How to Enter: Each artist may submit up to 10 slides (multiple views or
details of the same piece are acceptable where appropriate). Artist's
name, title, medium and size of work must appear on each slide. All slides
must be 35mm in a 2"x2" cardboard or plastic mount, clearly labeled "front"
and "top" and submitted in a plastic slide sheet, accompanied by a stamped,
self-addressed return envelope with sufficient postage for return of the
slides. Entries lacking return packaging and postage will not be returned.

NOTE: Email submissions of digital files will be accepted ONLY for digital
art, i.e. art works that exist only in digital form. Please contact
Richard Russo, ASD Arts Chair, for further instructions if you plan to
submit work electronically (RR@...).

Each entry must include a completed and signed entry form, available on the
ASD web site or from the curator. In addition, each entry must include a
brief biographical statement, and a brief artist's statement explaining how
the work is dream-related. These documents must be computer-printed or
typed on 8 1/2 x 11" paper. Any additional comments or personal
communications should go in a separate document or cover letter.

Selection: The show will be curated by Richard Russo, Chair, ASD Arts
Committee. All entries will be reviewed by an advisory jury. Final
selections will be made by the curator in consultation with the jury.

Criteria considered by the jury in reviewing entries will include:
* Quality (we are looking for professional quality art works)
* Connection to dreams or dreaming
* Completeness and quality of supporting documents (incomplete
documentation or vague, unclear statements may disqualify an entry. We
need a completed entry form, and we need to know how your work is
dream-related, how big it is, what the medium is, etc.)
* The quality of your slides will be a factor in reviewing submissions,
especially for the web component of the show (out of focus, poorly composed
or difficult to see images will be rejected).

Media: * All media, including digital art, will be considered for the web show

* All media, with the exception of digital art, will be considered for the
on-site show (there is no provision for displaying digital art
on-site). Space may be a factor; painting or sculpture larger than a few
feet along any dimension may be too large for the exhibit space.

Fee: There is a non-refundable $12 entry fee for non-ASD members. Checks
or money orders (in U.S. funds) should be made payable to ASD. Fees are
waved for current ASD members. For membership information, check our web
site (www.ASDreams.org) or call the ASD Information Office (1-925-258-1822).

Liability & Return of Slides: All slides will be returned within a few
months after the conference. Artists must enclose return packing and
sufficient postage. All slides will be handled by experienced personnel
and the utmost care taken to protect them. However, ASD will not be
responsible for any loss or damage to slides during shipping.

Liability, and Delivery & Pickup of Work: art accepted for the show at the
Radisson must be delivered in person the day before the conference,
Thursday, June 26, 2003, and picked up in person on the last day of the
conference, Tuesday, July 1, 2003. There is no provision for receiving or
return shipping of work

All works accepted for the on-site show must be suitably framed and/or
ready for display. Works on paper must be framed under glass or Plexiglas.

All art works will be handled by experienced personnel and the utmost care
taken to guarantee the safety of the work. The exhibition room will be
staffed during all open hours of the show. However, ASD will not be
responsible for any loss or damage to the work during installation or
during the exhibition itself. Insurance is the responsibility of the artist.

Deadline: All slides and paperwork must be received by March 31,
2003. Mail entries to: Richard Russo, 2003 ASD Art Exhibition, 835
Peralta Ave., Berkeley, CA 94707.
E-mail : RR@...

>>>> Collecting Animal Dreams

Pat Kampmeier is collecting dreams of fish, worms, wolves, cats and
salamanders, and also numinous dreams of any kind.

Series of any of these would be especially interesting. Please tell your
dream(s) and then a little about what that symbol means for you. If you
wish to show the work you have done, including drawings, to arrive at that
meaning(s),that would be great, too, though not necessary.
Several meanings for a particular symbol are OK, since dreams are
many-layered. I would also like to know how old you were when you had each
dream.

>>> Aggressive Womens'Dreams Needed
Erica Andermatt and I are currently working on the book "Woman with knife".
We collect and analyze dreams and daydreams of women, in which they are
aggressive, wild, violent and murderous... We try to answer questions like
"What is aggression?", "How can a woman handle this power?", "How can we
take the knife in our hands and be aware of not cutting our fingers?" and
others. If you would like to contribute aggressive dreams or daydreams? The
most nasty, wicked and cruel ones? Then please send your mail to
johanna_vedral@... If you would like so, send it anonymous. But
please tell us your age, your marital status and your occupation. If you
would like to go into a dialogue about your dreams/ daydreams, please tell
us, too, and we will contact you!

>>> Dream Team T.V. Show - Needs Dreams
Calling all dreamers! The SCI FI Channel is looking for guests for their

is call or e-mail us with your dream (be sure to include your name and
phone number), and you might be picked for a personal dream analysis on the
show! Guests will be featured live in studio, via satellite, and by phone.
Please call 323.520.5683 or email tvdreams02@.... And pleasant dreams...

>>> L.A. Dreamers Needed for T.V. Show
The Berman sisters (a medical doctor and a psychologist) have a TV show and
are planning an episode on dreaming. They are looking for dreamers who live
in the L.A. area. If you live in that area and have some interesting dreams

>>> Dream Survey : Are you having dreams about Islam?
http://dreamgate.com/dreamsofislam/

We are two Western Muslims, a British educator and an American writer, who
are interested both in how dreams relate to the spiritual life, and in how
Islam is presently perceived by Muslims and non-Muslims both in the west
and in traditionally Muslim lands. We hope to collaborate on a book with
the provisional title of Dreams of Islam. We are looking for striking or
significant dreams about Islam from both Muslims and non-Muslims, dreams
which have had a strong impact on you the dreamer, whether or not you think
the content would seem "interesting" to an outsider. The Islamic content
could refer to people, events, places, beliefs, practices, symbols,
memories or associations, architecture, works of art, written or spoken
words - anything specifically Islamic, or with an Islamic flavor.

You can fill out the survey at the website, or download the questions:
http://dreamgate.com/dreamsofislam/ . For more information, contact Charles
Upton : E-mail uptonjenny@...

>>>> Computer Dreams Needed!

Are you dreaming of problems with your hard disk, getting connected, the
wrong programs coming up, not being able to find the file you want? Does
your computer turn you on, and have you found yourself mating with a
digital partner or cyborg sex? Has god spoken to you through your computer
in a dream? Has the computer in a dream assisted you in becoming lucid?

Just as during the last turn of the century, we shifted from horse and
carriage dreams to cars, trucks and jets, now we are entering a new
cyber-symbolic era of networking and global interface. What dream content
will remain, what will change?

Take the Computer-Dream survey and help us better understand the changing
night-scape of the digital culture.

From Jean Campbell

"Following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in the United States, a group of
international dreamers gathered around the idea of dreaming the world
toward peace.

Everyone dreams. In many cultures it is believed that the world is a
creation of our dreams. These dreams are a bridge across which we can
reach toward one another.

It is difficult to make war against someone with whom we have shared a
dream. All dreamers are welcomed on The World Dreams Peace Bridge.

Many of the dreamers involved in the World Dreams Peace Bridge are members
of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. A history of
the first year of The World Dreams Peace Bridge was presented by Jean
Campbell at the 2002 ASD Membership Conference in Boston.

Monthly reports on the activities of the World Dreams Peace Bridge can be

Electric Dreams Cover for January 2003:
Title: "Moon Dance"

Lisa Rasmussen is an artist whose dreams have always inspired her life and
work. While studying in Italy in June, she discovered a passion for
ceramics, and plans to get her M.F.A. at J.F.K University, with that focus.
She is living her dream of creating in sacred sites around the world, and
is currently planning an adventure back to Machu Picchu or Bhutan in 2003.
Also, Lisa is living another dream of teaching art/therapy for at risk
teenagers. The program Lisa is teaching for is called Teen Art
Explosion-www.teenexplosion.org. Encouraging teens to live the dream.

To see more of her work, check out her web site
WWW.ETERNALGUILD.COM (created and maintained by the incredibly talented
web mistress Margie Kaplan)

Artist's Statement
---------------------

My dream world has been prophetic and challenging. Through my dream
paintings, I have discovered many layers within my dreams and myself. When
we manifest dreams and portray them on canvas, we link the conscious and
subconscious mind. Archetypes reside in the dream world, and when you
create with them, you can awaken their potential power in your life.
"Create, create and create" is the mantra of the universe. …Namaste
.
Moon dance was inspired from a fragment of a dream. I remember dreaming of
a white horse on a field. Then, a man came, took a sword, and sliced the
horse's belly. Suddenly, the horse transformed into a young maiden in a
white gown with a slice on her belly. I began to paint the piece with the
image and the feeling of the dream in my mind. Again, I just let the canvas
unfold. My only intent on the canvas was the horse. Through the process of
stopping, stepping back, and staring at the canvass, I proceeded to find
images on the picture plane and bring them out onto the canvas.

In LDE 24, Linda Magallon shared with us an intriguing article on religious
beliefs, lucid dreaming and psi. Here it is!

Going To The Sun: Religious Beliefs And Psi
(c) 2002 Linda Lane Magallón

I've been flying to the "sun" for quite some time. Although I might
consider this bright spot in the lucid dream as a piece of scenery to
explore, I also seem to have my own religious and philosophical
associations with it. However, neither first hand experience nor symbolic
interpretation rules out the possibility of psi. Even group psi. The last
dream in this article had resonance with my own waking life and with the
visualization and dream of two other dreamworkers.

The Room Above The Sun, 4/24/83

Second-hand, I see myself come out of a small house and walk towards a
large tree. Since I'm above and slightly to the right (of the dream scene),
I view mostly the head of the self below. She has dark hair and is wearing
a dress. She's also walking with another dark-haired woman.

As I become lucid, I shift to first-hand perspective. Now I can't see the
other woman, although I can feel her on my left. From this perspective, the
tree branches distract me because they completely fill my view. I want to
see beyond them. Reaching with my mind in that direction, I spontaneously
take off flying into the blue sky, headed for the sun. Closing in, I
discover that the "sun" is actually a stack of books pressed against the
"ceiling" of the dreamscape. The books have titles like "Rationalism" and
"Catholicism"!

I climb, or rather pull myself hand over hand, up the bookstack to the top.
There's a trap door here. Pushing the door upwards, I stick my head through
the opening. On the other side is a room with rows and rows of what look to
be small computers on tables. From my viewpoint just above the flat, grey
floor, I can see a white-clad man leaning over one of the computers. His
loose-fitting attire makes him look like a combination scientist and mystic.

"Is this the control center?" I ask him. He turns and indicates that I'm
half-right. This "higher plane" is also a learning center. Yes, I can see
the school desks in the room off to the right.

Levitating Is Against the Law, 5/3/87 (False Awakening)

Beyond the room where I'm located, I can hear a group of people at a
birthday celebration. I levitate up off the floor, then downward and land,
yelling at my son, "Go tell mother!" I want a witness to this super feat
(since I think I'm awake in physical reality). I try levitating upside down
while standing on my head, but there's too much weight. I jump up and don't
come down, floating into the bedroom. "See? See?" I call, "Let mother
know!" I float out of a sliding glass door.

Now I have the heavy, foreboding feeling that someone wants to keep me
here. Is levitating against the religious law in this time and space? I
float up to the roof where I can see cars passing quickly on a narrow,
windy road. I hadn't heard them before, because of the celebration inside.

I continue floating upward in a feather-light storm of snowflakes or white
puffs to circle around a brightly lit "sun." It attracts, then zaps me. I
get out of the way, to the other side.

Flying To An Exploding Sun, 12/11/90

I find myself outside, lucid, in a flat area with tall trees in the
distance. I especially notice the warmth and light of the dream scene and
look around in the sky for the source. It's the sun. Even though I know it
might not be the actual sun, I decide to fly to it. I launch myself into
the air and streak directly towards it.

Then I become concerned about the heat that I might encounter in the
inferno (who knows how similar it might be to the physical sun?) and I
start to veer off. But I steal my courage and force myself back on course.
The "sun" doesn't get any larger than, say, a garbage can lid, but I fly
directly into it with my outstretched hands. It separates into a fireworks
display, exploding from a small yellow center. Sparkles shoot off in all
directions, in an irregular but balanced circular pattern.

There are several dreamworkers mentioned in this fourth dream and its
aftermath. Here's a bit of information about them.

o Kent Smith founded the San Francisco *Dream Training Institute* and
helped create the "Dream Definition Dialogue" interview method of dreamwork.
o Fariba Bogzaran is a lucid dream artist who teaches arts and
consciousness studies at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California.
o Fred Olsen co-founded the Bay Area Dreamworkers Group and created and
practices the "Waking Dream Re-entry" technique.
o Françoise Boucher is a psychic dreamworker from Marin County, California.
o Tore Neilsen is a lucid dream researcher from Montréal, Canada who found
that wearing a blood pressure cuff in the lab produced dreams of falling
and flying.
o Barbara Shor was a mutual dream researcher from New York City who
co-wrote "Shared Dreaming: Joining Together in Dreamtime" with me.

The Divine Within, 6/23/88

I become lucid in a room that has several people at the far end, some
sitting, some standing as if in a scenario of a shoe department (I
especially remember one slender, dark-haired man). I take a deep breath and
call out to my recurring dream character, "Willie! Willie!" Previously the
people had been fairly immobile, but the energy of my voice raises them to
activity. They jump up and/or begin walking rapidly away toward my left,
except for one. That woman, who has long, curly, light brown hair, comes
forward to speak with me. We talk; I ask her, "How do I find Willie? Should
I stay here? Or spin and go someplace else? Or what?"

"Do what you want," she replies. I remember hearing this reply before in
lucid dreams. So I decide on a new tack. "What do I want?" I ask her. In a
voice so low I almost think I imagine it, she replies, "Love." She's sure
right about that, I muse.

I decide to go ahead and spin my way-clockwise-into another scene, calling
out, "Willie! Willie!" I find myself in another room. The people here seem
shorter, younger, and definitely more playful. They crowd behind what looks
to be a rather large dollhouse placed on a table. I peer at them through
the open front door. "Do you want to play with me?" I call, trying to
encourage them to come forth.

Then I look around at my surroundings. I peek behind a mirror attached to
the wall, trying to find a doorway. "Aha!" I exclaim when I see just the
wall, as if there is some significance to this fact. I walk further down
the wall, searching for a way out. I realize my concern over the
possibility of being trapped is creating this continuous wall, so I let go
of it. In response, a door suddenly appears. I can peer into the next room
and see that just inside the door, to my right, are seated three Black men.
"Now we're getting closer!" I say to myself. This is the first time I've
come across Black people in this dream.

I walk across the room, up to a bar where women are seated or standing. I
talk with a rather tall Black woman standing there, asking questions like,
"Do you know Willie?" She responds, "There's somebody I'd like you to
meet." She gestures at another Black woman seated at the bar who turns
towards me. I am struck by how large her eyes are. As I continue to gaze,
her features metamorphose to become more Caucasian, yet the pupils stay
with the same wide-eyed look.

(During this dream sequence, I almost awaken several times, but force
myself to gather strength and continue the dream. As I am finally
awakening, during the "blank" period of hypnopompia, I hear a voice state,
"Create the conscious..." Waking fully, I wonder if that meant "Create the
consciousness." As I am pondering this, I suddenly remember that I want to
participate in Fariba Bogzaran's spiritual lucid dreaming project. Heading
back towards the dream state, I "freeze" the flickering hypnogogia. In a
grey space, I form the intent she suggested to "Seek the Divine Within" and
immediately have the distinct impression that Willie is standing unseen,
off to my left. Then movement propels me into a brief dream scenario.)

I find myself walking forward, carrying the back end (right side) of a
large mural which dips and sways as we pace (Willie is carrying the other
end). The mural is covered with a swirling abstract of red and hot pink
colors, juxtaposed with highlights of white and charcoal or chocolate
brown. I awake again with the strong impression that the "Divine Within" is
something that Willie and I create together.

(I tell my husband bits of the dream, then fall slowly back to sleep,
holding onto the intent that, for Fariba's project, I will be seeking the
"Divine Within.")

This time when the scene springs up, I am in a room with lots of people,
not immobile but moving around the room. My impression is that this area is
very much "on the surface" so I form the intent to go deeper. I look for an
exit and discovering none, decide to go through a wall. Instead, as I near
the wall, I find rows of bright, colorful *curtains waving as if caught in
a breeze.*

Just before I enter, however, I suddenly notice the person just passing by
is Fariba Bogzaran. *Fariba is skating around* the hardwood floor
counter-clockwise, as are most of the other people (I've come clockwise, as
have a few others). My sense is that Fariba's motion is "getting things
going" or revving the people up for her project.

My own forward movement and intent is so strong that I almost lose the
dream trying to stop myself. But before I take off to my adventure, I want
to tell Fariba what I am doing. With a supreme effort I manage to turn
around to call out: "Fariba! Fariba! I'm going to seek the Divine Within!"

"OK, Linda," she responds in her usual high-pitched voice, "Good luck!" I
turn once again to go through the swinging drapery. I walk through several
rooms and corridors of various shapes and sizes, not all of which are
rectangular or square. Some are curved -I remember a corridor made of a
series of semicircles spaced one after another which narrows to allow for
only the passage of a single person. I pass people everywhere I go,
sometimes stopping to chat with them.

One dark-haired woman seems quite lucid herself, almost a guide figure,
until she says to me confidentially, "For a buck you can pass over." I know
she means "passing over to the other side," that is, dying or being reborn.
I get the impression this opportunity is a particular point in a game, like
passing "Go" in Monopoly where you can collect a monetary amount before
going through another cycle. "Oh, no! Not again!" I exclaim. I know this
is the fourth time in a dream I had been offered such a "deal" (dreams
unrecalled upon awakening), but this time I'm not going to be tricked into
taking her up on this game, not for such a paltry amount.

It's at this point that I am in the semicircular corridor, following a
blonde haired woman as the corridor narrows. I realize that before long I'm
really going to have to squeeze through. I pause and make an adjustment in
my thinking (like taking a breath and creating more mental space). The
scene shifts and I find myself in a larger rectangular room where people
are coming and going-it's like a crossroads. I talk to some of the people.

Finally, after going through all this restricted space, I find myself
outdoors in a huge grassy field. After walking in a semicircle I come upon
a group of people seated in a rectangle, as if around an Olympic-size
swimming pool. I join the "end of the line" and sit down, too. In contrast
to the minor frustration I've felt in the rest of the dream, I feel that
I've finally "come home" to a bunch of like-minded people. I briefly wonder
"Sethians?" but they seem to include and go beyond that designation.

I feel so right and comfortable that I'm not at all upset to turn and
discover that the three "people" who've come to sit after me, aren't people
at all. They're colorful geometric crustaceans, cartoon-like lobsters and
crabs. We don't talk in English, but our non-verbal communication indicates
that they are in agreement with my views. Suddenly, directly in front of
the critters, appears what seems to be an immobile bus (no wheels). The
double doors swing open and a man steps out and points his finger at the
three crustaceans. "You've got to go!" he orders. I wonder-why? They
weren't doing anything.

Before I have a chance to develop this line of thinking further, my
attention is drawn to the right. I stand and discover that a new group of
people, including a blonde haired man, have intruded smack into the middle
of our group's space. They are busily setting up some weird construction in
the center of the grassy field. The outside is made up of straight-edged
planes crossing each other at acute angles, but the main piece is an
*organic cylindrical structure, curved like the casing of a snake, but
larger at the base than at the top.* The sun is a small circle in a wide
blue sky and its diffused light illuminates the entire vividly colored
scene. But the structure's top opening is only large enough to admit the
sun's blinding light. The hole is too tiny for anyone inside to see the
blue sky. Nor anything else, for that matter.

I get the sense that this inverted cone-like structure is built to attract
and gather the Light, like a telescope. *The cylinder is painted bright
yellow*, to better reflect the Light. The structure is only large enough
for one person to stand-their shoulders would be scrunched if they were
tall. *There is little room for movement and they'd be mostly surrounded by
darkness.* But these disadvantages would be ignored because of the
attraction of the Light. With head raised, the person would gaze directly
into the blinding brilliance collected at the topmost opening. Captured by
the ecstasy of the sensation, they would rise and be sucked into it and
disappear into the Light.

The symbolism is so powerful and so clear that I immediately and
intuitively understand what these people are about. And I get angry. "You
mean to tell me that I have to join some religion in order to reach God?
The hell with that!"

I wave my hand in rejection and the intruders and the structure vanish. All
I see is the field with people fleeing from me, back in the direction from
which I've come.
"The hell with that!" I repeat, setting my legs akimbo and slapping my
fists against my hips. I have the sense that my colleague Kent Smith is off
to my left, supporting my conviction that such a narrow religious pathway
to Godhood is totally unnecessary.

Here in this green, grassy, open field with buildings in the distance and
clear, blue sky stretching to the far horizon, I've a wonderful feeling of
expansiveness. I stand centered in the midst of the diffused sunlight that
covers the entire space and allows me to see the beauty of the whole world.
I awake with the same great feeling of self-confidence about my stance.

The next day I took a meditational walk through the nearby park. As I was
passing the playground, I did a double-take. *The essence of the curved
children's slide was the same as the structure in my dream.*

When I shared this dream with the Bay Area Dreamworkers Group the following
weekend, Kent Smith shook his fist and said, "All right!" No one else
seemed to react too much, no one that is, until we all painted pictures of
images in recent dreams. Then, as I was hanging my painting on the wall, a
visitor to our group took one look and told me about a waking re-entry he'd
just done a day or so before. It had the same image.

The following is a transcription of a taped interview with Tore Neilsen on
July 2nd.
_______________________
Tore: "This is a waking image-I was doing it during a clairvoyant re-entry
with Fred Olsen and Françoise Boucher about a week or so ago. I was
focusing on the image of a black hole in space and the question was:
"What's in this black hole?"

I looked inside and there was this yellow image. At first it was just an
incoherent image-it was like *a pile of yellow ice cream, except it was
two-dimensional, thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top.* It was
standing straight up. I felt like I didn't know what this was. The next
instruction was, "Well, go with that."

So I kind of threw myself forward into the image and suddenly it was no
longer straight up, *but it was a slide*, that was down and sort of
pointing ahead. I was sliding down along the curves of this yellow object.
And I slid and slid right to the bottom, from side to side, right to the
bottom.

And at the bottom, I was in a valley overlooking an area like Big Sur.
There was a big gong in the image and I sat in front of the gong and
starting sounding, with a steady hum, "Wahhhhhh." I was sitting in front of
it and meditating. That's where we decided to stop."

Linda: "How did you get to the black hole? Was there any particular theme
you were carrying through or particular life issue?"

Tore: "I was focusing on some part of my body-I'm not sure. Yes, I think
coming down from my head and trying to see what was in the way..."

Linda: "So it was a body-symptom type of re-entry?"

Tore: "Yeah."

Linda: "And you were feeling pain or maybe pressure someplace?"

Tore: "I think it was a stuckness kind of thing. *I got to a place where I
was really stuck and what seemed to be there was a black hole."*

At the ASD conference next week, dreamworker Barbara Shor told me a dream
of a *black rock.* Dejá vù. I showed her my painting and she confirmed that
hers was the same shape as the structure in my dream.

Finally, I was sitting with Barbara at the "Night's Worth of Dreams"
presentation, in which Fariba Bogzaran was participating. And what did we
see on stage? *Fariba and others gliding around and waving a curtain* of
plastic material to imitate the rolling sea! And, as a series of slides
were being projected against the stage backdrop, one especially caught my
eye. Barbara turned to me in sudden recognition, too. It was a *curved rock
of sandstone, with base wider than the protruding top*-the dream image come
to life! An eerie shiver went down my back.

Each dreamworker had his or her own associations to the image. Mine, I knew
instinctively, both in the dream and afterwards. The image was a perfect
illustration of my ideas of something which had concerned me greatly and
about which I had addressed in a Letter to the Editor of the "Lucidity
Letter". It related to the issues surrounding lucidity which emerge from a
particular spiritual/philosophical framework that emphasizes kundalini
arousal and "going to the Light."

My contention was that the fears, worries and overwhelming experiences
described by the dreamers were inherent in the practices of their
particular philosophical/religious structure but not in LUCID DREAMING per
se. My belief was based on knowledge of those lucid dreamers, including
myself, who do not experience that framework and its accompanying problems.

As my dream so blatantly states, it is not necessary to adhere to a
particular religion in order to have a spiritual lucid experience.
Furthermore, the format and content of the lucid experience is related
directly to the pre-dream expectations, values and mores of the dreamer.

So there. :-)

Dream Flow and Fragments
© 2002 Linda Lane Magallón
(Excerpted from "How To Fly")

This tale's a fragment from the life of dreams.
S. T. Coleridge

Freezing The Dream

"There are many times when I wake up with the clear awareness that I have
just left a dream. I cannot bring any of it back and that can be real
frustrating," said fellow dreamer Kyla Houbolt to me. I told her that I've
also had the disappointing experience of awakening with a very clear dream
in mind. Then I moved and felt it dissipate.

Let's say that you do wake up from a dream. What's the first thing you do?
Hermann Rorschach, the inventor of the famous "ink-blot" test, observed
that it is necessary to lie quietly because any quick motor movement might
disrupt memory of the dream. It may seem ironic to a flying dreamer, but
the first thing you *don't* do is move your body. Do not move! Let you mind
drift back to the land of sleep until you reach the dream. Try to remain
still and float between the worlds.

Sometimes all I can recall is a feeling. I let the feeling be; I soak it
up, try to exaggerate it. Then I try to "look around" the feeling. I blink
my eyes and roll them slightly, imitating the movement of my eyes in sleep.
To the right, to the left, up and down. Eventually an image might spring
up. A single picture. As I let the picture float awhile, it usually expands
into a short movie clip. I rerun the movie clip over in my mind. I do the
same with other feelings or tactile sensations that might resurface, luring
out images from the depths of darkness. Pictures might come from the
beginning, ending or middle of my dream.

It's easiest to recall dreams while you're yet lying in bed because dreams
rest on our cellular structure. We actually dream with our whole body, not
just our eyes. And so dream can be best recalled when you remain in the
position in which the last dream happened. Then, after that dream is fixed
in memory, start moving around to discover if you can remember a dream that
occurred while you slept in another position. Do you have a favorite flying
stance?

Some extremely vague dreams have no color and little else but shape, form
and movement. For them, I visualize the central thought, structure or
feeling and turn it into a word or phrase, no matter how bizarre it may
seem ("Overlapping wine glass prints." "Soft separating boundaries."
"Hang-dog me as stack of flyers.").

Memory storage is what I call this process. That's taking the dream from
its diffuse intuitive-associative state, pulling it together into sharp
focus and then inserting it into waking memory. You are doing a switch from
an associative to a logical-rational process, and repeating it several
times to get it fixed there. Sometimes you only have to do it once, if you
wake with a really powerful dream. The point of waking memory storage is to
capture the dream long enough to report it: to write it down or tell it at
breakfast.

If there are no images, no feeling, no thoughts, no sounds or other
sensations, if all I can recall is a "black or blank," then I let be and
try again another day.

Rehearsal In The Shower

If you rerun the dream memory enough times, you can actually fix it in
long-term memory. On those days when you are not able to record the dream
as you awake, you can remember it long enough to record it when you do find
the time. One dreamer I know rehearses the dream while making coffee and
feeding her cats.

I often found myself in a situation where family noise would awaken me. I'd
hear our cats meowing, be caught in the glare of sunlight or smell
someone's breakfast wafting up the stairwell. I'd have a flying dream, but
no time to record it and realize I've would have no time until lunch break
or maybe not even until I returned from work. Yet, I knew the dream theme
was too important to let fade.

My technique is to get up and take a shower. I use the time to recall more
of the dream or to fix the dream in memory in my mind. What's great about
the shower (or the private automobile, tape recorder or telephone) is that
I can speak the dream aloud without folks watching me and thinking that I'm
nuts. Thus, I can rely on audio memory as well as visual when it comes time
to write down the dream. The verbal fix is a switch from right-brain to
left brain thinking.

Retrieving A Lost Dream

I envy those dreamers who say a fragile dream memory can spontaneously pop
into the middle of the day's events. But that rarely works for me, unless
I'm having some sort of deja vu experience. Instead, I must lure the timid
dream into the light of day. If I let my awareness drift in a certain way
during waking time I can sometimes peek around the corner to the dream memory.

There are times when I clearly do remember a dream after waking up...and
then I lose it. Other times I have no visual memory of the dream, but a
feeling tone is retained deep into the day. I can sometime invoke recall if
I play a game of let's pretend.

I return to my bedroom, lay down on my bed, get back into a sleeping
position. I pretend it's the night before. I am asleep and dreaming. I soon
discover the distracters: a full stomach, noises from the family
underground, aches and pains, odd smells, a mind buzzing with activity.

With eyes closed and body relaxed, the feeling tone is easier to access.
Images may resurface. If one sleeping position is not fruitful, I try
another. I discover that too much relaxation puts me to sleep.

Play is trial and error. And trying again and again, with a new trick each
time. Does getting under the covers help? Do I need to change clothes? Will
it work if I simply try a sleeping position in the couch?

With my eyes closed, I start moving the focus of my consciousness around.
Here to the right, to the left, like I'm focusing at a distance and then
back in to the tip of my nose. Maybe slowly try little hops. It's like
rocking a cradle or bouncing it. At times, while I'm focusing in one
direction, something tickles at the periphery of my vision in the other.
I'm teasing the images back out, not forcing myself.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I only keep up the process
until my body gets restless. Then I get up and go on with the day.

Walking The Dream

I like to take walks. Motion has two effects, two sides of the same coin.
First, movement helps me focus on bodily sensations and remember things
related to the body better. Things like flying dreams. Second, the rhythm
of the walking loosens stuck patterns so that I am in contact with
inspiration, insights, ideas or other flows of consciousness. And what is a
flying dream but a flow of consciousness?

Once, I went for a walk down by the creek. I let my consciousness drift
around, while looking at the sky and the trees. Then, I shifted to memory,
thought back in time to the morning, just after wakening. I realized that
one reason I didn't remember any dreams is that I had awakened too early,
felt fatigued and then forced myself to get more sleep. By the time I awoke
the second time, I was late for work. My daughter was pounding on the
shower door and yelling about her science experiment. So I didn't have any
chance to practice recall in the shower, either.

I returned in imagination to that point when I woke up the first time. I
bounced my focus back and forth between that memory and the present
experience of the walk by the creek. I finally realized that the reason why
I wasn't remembering any images was that it had been an imageless dream. It
was a mental or aural dream with conversation, only. Had I written it down,
I would have recorded a person speaking a single sentence to me.

But I couldn't remember what the sentence was. It made sense when I got it.
Now I couldn't recall a single word. Great, I thought, it's gone forever.

No, no, it's okay, I told myself. Keep walking down the road. Finally, I
remembered two words. One was "full" and one was "project." Okay, full
"something" project. And then I pulled in the first part of the sentence.
It was "You are going to have a full "something" project." I started second
guessing myself, coming up with possible words. "Full rounded?" I could
feel the barriers go up because I was inserting my waking logic. I was
trying figure it out, not remember it. Some birds flew by and triggered the
thought, "Full fledged project." That's it! "You are going to have a full
fledged project."

Some dreamworkers will tell you that every piece of dream is equally
precious. They will give examples of dreamlet bits and pieces that have had
profound effects on the dreamer's lives. I, too, have found birdlike wisps
of dreams that I'll always treasure. But this wasn't one of them. So why
bother to go through all this effort to recall just a fragment?

I do it to prime the pump. When you begin to recall and record your dreams,
or when you return to dream recording after a hiatus, you don't have the
dream flow habit. At that point, it's important to recall whatever you can
and write down whatever is produced, until the system starts chugging out a
steady stream of dreams or dreams of greater length and more detail. Then
you can become selective. Many fragments are the equivalent of a dancer
doing warm-up stretches before creating a dance or an artist sketching
black and white doodles before producing a colored oil painting. Play with
whatever you get and your dream psyche will appreciate it. The quantity and
quality of your dream life improves with the attention you give.

Limiting Dream Recall

A dreamer once told me he was filled to overflowing with bitsy dreams. "I'm
waiting for a dream that impacts me, because I get real sick of these
little tidbits here and there. They just don't leave me satisfied." I
replied, "Nobody says you have to record every single one. As a matter of
fact, I don't think there's enough time in the day."

Pieces or epics, once the dream stream is turned on, it's possible to have
an overabundance of riches. I'm in agreement with dreamworker Ilona
Marshall who often suggests to herself that she *not* have so many dreams
to remember. She requests of her psyche, "Just give me the powerful ones or
the ones that are really important." I consider health to be "really
important," and flying dreams a barometer of health, so those are the ones
I keep.

There are even certain times in my life when I rather not recall any dreams
at all. If there is much of importance going on in the waking state, my
full attention is required elsewhere. When I'm sick, when I'm on a writing
deadline, when I need to prepare for a dream conference, my mind may have
to focus on other things.

After you develop good dream flow habits, there's no need to feel guilty
when you do not record every single dream that you recall. Or not recall at
all. So today, you can't dance or paint or fly? There's always tomorrow.

The month of December has been a busy and active one on the World Dreams
Peace Bridge.

On December 6, Jeremy wrote from Korea. "Yesterday and the night before, I
had a good reception at the UNESCO cosponsored Symposium for Peace and
Reconciliation in the Asian-Pacific Region. The first night, I sang the
'Peace Train Song' the best I have ever sung it, and on stage (for the
first time solo) before an audience of about 100--all but three of them
strangers. The next day, I met people from various countries, some of whom
had heard my song and were pleased with me, and others who had not but who
became friendly with me and showed interest in the peace trains, which were
being displayed up and down the stairway leading to the conference hall.

"Some capable people expressed interest in helping the peace train in their
own countries, including a Swiss official from the World Council of
Churches..., a Ghanian theological student, an Indian professor who said
his daughter in Calcutta might help, a Sri Lankan peace activist, a
Cambodian female social worker, and most concretely a Korean woman with the
sponsoring UNESCO organization, who proposed I give other presentations at
an upcoming teachers training workshop at UNESCO and also a Peace Education
training workshop in the summer....

"The Centere also invited me to hold two Children's Peace Train workshops,
training teachers, so that they can go back to their own classes and teach
their students about Peace, including through Peace Train making: one on
January 22nd at their headquarters in Seoul, and another around August
18th, during a ten day teacher training workshop, also in Korea."

A week later, Jeremy also sent a note about the creation of Peace Trains in
Seoul. "During the Fall Term of 2002, South Korean students from my Peace
Education classes at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul visited
local elementary schools, playgrounds, art schools, churches and private
institutes, as well as members of their own families, to introduce, help
create, and collect Peace Trains. I asked my students, 'What did you learn
from the experience of making peace trains with children and others?' All
without exception had a very positive learning experience. Here are some
of their replies:

'I did the Peace Train with my cousins. But when I talked to them, I
didn't know if they would help me. I found they were happy to help
me. Everybody had their own idea of Peace. If somebody starts to think
about Peace when they were very young, maybe they would be more active in
Peace work later in life.'

'At first kids didn't know what to do. Then I asked them, "What do you
feel about Peace? What do you want to do about Peace?" Then they loved
it. The couldn't stop talking. They had so many ideas I didn't want to
tell them what to do. I told them to do what they wanted to do.'"

'When I asked the children to, they made pigeons flying to North Korea,
people climbing mountains, etc. Their brilliant thoughts astonished me.'

For more comment from Jeremy's students, and a look at the progress of the
Peace Train Project, come visit the World Dreams Peace Bridge web
site World Dreams Peace Bridge http://www.worlddreamspeacebridge.org/index.htm

And that is another thing which happened during the month of December. The
dreamers of the World Dreams Peace Bridge created a web site. Money for
the site was donated by people in the group, and the gorgeous design for
the web site was created by Elizabeth Diaz. We had discovered that, for
new arrivals on the Bridge (and people do keep coming to the group), it was
becoming more difficult to understand what was happening. The pace of the
discussion group can be a little overwhelming, along with just figuring out
who's on first...or should I say who's got a foot on the Bridge. With the
web site, which also contains the history of the World Dreams Peace Bridge,
we will much more easily be able to keep people informed.

Not just people, but dreams keep arriving, in a process that is somewhat
startling, even to those of us who've been in on it since the
beginning. Here's an example. During December, the discussion group added
two new members from Australia, Nick and Janette. Janette is talking about
introducing the Peace Train Project to public schools in Melbourne, while
Nick sent a couple of dreams he'd had about a treasure chest and putting
treasures in the box. Next thing you know, Kathy is dreaming about
Aladdin's cave full of treasures, and there is a plan developing for
putting a page on the web site for people to donate their own
treasures...in the form of dreams and ideas...to the web site. All within
the space of a week.

And finally, speaking of Australia, Peace Bridge member Victoria Quinton,
was interviewed this month by a reporter from a sustainable growth magazine
put out by a company called GHD in Sydney. Among the questions she was
asked were:

1. What do you think are the five major problems, issues and challenges now
facing humans in the area of sustainability, peace, and harmony in the world?

2. What is your vision of how it could be?

3. What do you see as the pathway?

4. Who else do you know who is working in these areas?

5. What resources do you recommend?

Truthfully, the first question alone would have stopped me, but Victoria
(who many of you know from her role as moderator of the dreamchatters
online group) is an articulate and knowledgeable spokesperson for both
dreams and peace.

Of course, there is still war and rumors of war. Yvonne, in Mexico City
had a dream in early December that World War Three had begun and nuclear
bombs were being dropped on the U.S. Fortunately, this was "only a
dream." But because the dreamers on the World Dreams Peace Bridge tend to
believe that our dreams can change the world, we plan to celebrate the
Solstice on December 21 by joining Roger Ripert in France, and the rest of
the people in Onieros, in the Planetary Dream for World Peace.

In this holiday season, dreamers are especially aware of the song which
early became the theme song of the World Dreams Peace Bridge: "Let there be
Peace on Earth, and let it begin with me."

A Question of Religion

o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o

DREAM : a question of religion

=( mother and i got back late from usual dinner out and then shopping. we
went to the mall because i had special discounts at the DVD store. as is
our custom on saturday evening, we watched several blockbuster rentals. we
have been on deathwatch with my cat, samantha, who stopped eating last week
and is getting weaker and weaker everyday. the vet said her kidneys have
stopped working so she is feels nauseated all the time and does not want to
eat. samantha is 22 years old and is now fading away. the best i can do
for her is hold her on my lap in front of the fireplace all evening. i got
to bed around 01:30 and went to sleep easily. )=

"so, do you want to see my uvies?" sebastian asks me. i hardly hear him as
i am quietly looking at selina, the young woman seated across the table
from a couple seats down. there are about six people seated here at the
table, but i only have eyes for the pretty girl who has attracted my
attention. she smiles back at me once in a while and i find her smile to
be like sunshine bursting through cloud cover. she does not smile nearly
enough, usually being focused on something or the other and trying to
appear stern and serious.

"my uvies." sebastian repeats to me. "would you like to see them?"

"sure, i would be delighted." i return to paying attention to him. this
is his residence or place of business, a long narrow one-room apartment
with the outer wall being a row of store front showcase windows. sebastian
is short but severe man with wild rasputin eyes, sometimes looking into
heaven and sometimes seeing only madness. i suppose i would call him an
eclectic pagan, taking little snippets of various religions or minor myths
and fusing them together in the manner of a prophet crying out in the
wasteland. in this case the wasteland is a small college town where i work.

he and i make our apologies and take leave of the table and the others. we
leave through a small back door in the back of the room and then down some
gray wooden steps to where his car is parked. it is a rusting old hulk of
a sedan. he opens the trunk and carefully pulls out a candy box from the
corner.

when he lifts the lid of the box, i can see that inside are a couple dozen
eggs nested in each plastic cradle where a fancy chocolate used to be. each
look to me just like a small hard boiled egg, cut in half: yellow yolk
surrounded by white albumen. i know that these are still living embryos
that will eventually hatch into something but i do not know if amphibian,
reptile or bird. sebastian carefully adjusts a couple of his uvies like a
proud father then returns the candy box to its secure corner of the
trunk. "i raise these to be used in sacrifice when i perform the grand
ritual." he says to me seriously, sounding like abraham preparing his
son. i nod my head in understanding but think of nothing to say.

he seems satisfied now. we go back into his room where the others are
standing getting ready to leave. selina tilts her head to me, a gesture
for me to join her. i hurry over and everyone shakes hands or hugs each
other as sebastian gives his benediction for parting.

outside we walk over the wooden deck which leads to the small bridge
crossing the stream. the embankment on the other side leads into the back
of the college campus, all ivy covered brickwork.

"wasn't sebastian just wonderful today?" selina finally says to me, her
voice radiant. i try to agree though in truth i barely heard half what he
said. i came along only because she invited me. fortunately his meetings
tend to be short because he will tend to ramble incoherently at great
length if given the chance, so he has trained himself to take body cues
from the audience for the depth of his visionary experiences. "i can
hardly wait until tonight for the celestial healing." she turns one of
those smiles on me which dazzles into my body like sunlight through a
jellyfish.

she skips ahead to greet an elderly homeless woman on the steps of the
library. i continue on at my leisurely pace, nodding to the bag lady as i
pass by. selina soon catches up to me on the campus common.

"up there." she points to a basket like apartment attached to the second
floor of a nearby building just off campus. "that is where i live. i need
to get my diary from my study desk."

"i can get it for you." i say running over where a ladder is leaning
against the wall. i reposition it and find that it just barely reaches the
lower part of cane woven floor of her room, but still i start to climb as
soon as the ladder comes to rest. i am up about the first four rungs when
the weight shifts and the ladder falls away. i just manage to jump off and
avoid an undignified fall to the ground, but i am a bit embarrassed to
appear so impetuous and unprepared.

i reset the ladder, this time making certain of its footing is on solid
ground. when i start to climb up again, this time i cheat a little. my
heart is feeling so light that i could just fly up to her wicker room, but
instead i concentrate to produce just enough lift that i am almost
weightless upon the ladder. i make the motions of climbing the rungs in a
secure confident manner. the ladder, though barely reaching the
destination ahead, does not quiver as i ascend.

when i get to the top, i do not have to go in. the walls are such a
loose weave of cane reeding that i can just reach through to get her dark
diary from the desk just inside the wall. its leather covers are pad
locked on the side and it weighs more than i would expect. i wonder what
heavy secrets she has written inside.

i toss the diary down to her, then just because i am feeling so good, i
swing from rung to rung on the basketwork like a kid on a jungle gym. when
i get to the end, i let go and allow myself to float gracefully but quickly
down to the grass beside selina. i do not want to appear to be taking
advantage of levitation so obviously, but i also do not want another
ungraceful fall like before.

"my, but you are certainly limber--" she cuts off abruptly with a brief
expression of uncertainty. i can tell she almost said 'for your age' or
'for your size' but did not want to draw attention to our obvious
differences. yet, this just underscored her concerns. i am happy that she
seems to want me around so i do not mind being the fool once in a while so
long as it does not become the rule rather than the exception.

we walk for a while, enjoying the afternoon.

the campus is not that large so eventually we come back to sebastian's
building near the stream. there is some kind of commotion going on there.
several police cars are parked along the street and a number of town's
people have gathered at the scene.

pushing her way through the crowd, selina leads me over the bridge to where
the policemen have surrounded sebastian on the deck. they appear to be in
menace mode. there are several town police and one security guard that i
recognize from the college.

"but you are hatching the eggs to raise them as pets which are to be
killed in your barbaric ceremonies." the security guard is saying. "that
is cruelty to animals."

"they die as messengers to the divine principle" sebastian replies. "we
raise them as perfect sacrifices, pampered with purity so they carry no
blemish. these are not pets, but the best we can create and so to
demonstrate our devotion to truth, justice and fate."

the security guard just notices me and is surprised that i am here. "there
is a question of religious freedom here." i tell him. "you do not arrest
the faculty of the biology department who raise thousands of lab rats only
to kill them in experiments. this seems like harassment on how this man
expresses his religion."

the policemen all seem to be taken aback that an instructor from the school
would speak in defense of this mad man. i can understand their worry about
charismatic fanaticism, but sebastian is not so deliberate to be dangerous.

"you better be careful." the security guard warns me. "we sometimes have
to arrest the celebrants as well as the priests of rogue rituals." it just
now occurs to me that selina and myself may end up in jail when we come to
the celestial healing later tonight. this seems like a lot of trouble over
sebastian's little uvies.

the sound of a gas engine firing up draws our attention across the water of
the stream. the town street people have sat down in rows on the grass of
the embankment to watch the legal processes over here. in front of them on
the stream bank, scott conti is operating a cement mixer pouring fresh mix
into a trench. he is apparently trying to reinforce the shoreline with a
heavy buttress, but his concrete is too moist and does not hold in the
rigid form. instead, it slips back down slope into the gravel of the
stream bed in a sloppy soup.

the town police take notice. "hey! do you have a building permit?" they
all hurry across the bridge now to confront scott. this seems rather much
like keystone cops rushing about higgily piggily. i am pretty certain that
scott does not have any permits, as he always enjoyed operating just under
the legal limits of things. just now, the cops are relieved to have
another focus and get off the attempted religion arrest.

with attention now across the shore, it seems prudent for those of us on
the deck to quietly disband without further attention. "for myself, i
think we should leave here." everyone nods their assent. i notice that
selina follows me back through the crowd on the other side.

i make so bold as to take her hand as we walk. the sun is just setting so
the sky is full of color. everything seems perfect. after a few steps she
lets go of my hand, so i feel a little chagrined for seeking so direct an
intimacy. a few steps more, she then takes my hand back. we go on for
quite a while like this: hands on, hands off, hands on again. somehow this
intermittent affection amplifies my longing for her to unbearable levels.

as the evening starts to get darker, we pass the library again, near some
of the bushes, i see the homeless bag lady again. instead of her usual
dirty gray rags, she is wearing a blue satin puffed dress with white stars
embroidered. a powder or dust in the air around her sparkles when she
moves just like a fairy glamour. selina smiles at her friend who returns
the smile with a wink of conspiracy between just them. surely i have never
done anything so good as to deserve so fine a destiny as this.

=( the clock 08:55 when i awaken. this was a long and complicated dream
to get into my dream log. the main characters of sebastian, selina and the
bag lady are completely unknown to me. the security guard looked a lot
like clif redding, computer network admin for my department here. scott
conti is someone i know from massachusetts, and he was in another dream a
couple nights ago. the town and college was more like northampton and
smith college than any other i have known, but i did not get to see much of
that area as this dream seems to cycle around a small area twice. there
was a feeling of constant tenderness in this dream that i do not think i
described as good as it felt. )=

The Evolution of REM Dreaming:
New Research Includes All Mammals

Richard Wilkerson

o|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|o

New studies reveal that more animals are dreaming than we thought. In fact,
all mammals and birds have REM, and if J.M. Siegel is correct, reptiles may
have REM as well.

REM, or Rapid Eye Movement sleep is a regularly occurring stage of sleep in
which, when people are awakened and asked, dreams are often reported. In
this stage of sleep, which occurs about six times a night for an average of
twenty minutes each, our eyes move under our eyelids as if we were awaking
and scanning some scene, hence the designation Rapid Eye Movement sleep.

After the 1953 discovery of REM in humans by modern science, researchers
began testing other species for REM and searching for signs of dreaming in
all kinds of creatures. They found that most mammals had REM, but couldn't
find REM in reptiles.

A theory developed that dreaming was an evolutionary advance to keep the
mammalian brain warm and alert and to not let it sink too deeply into
inactivity. Oddly, some mammals seem to lack this sleep stage,
particularly the egg laying echidna and the friendly dolphin.

Now these older studies are being questioned as new research goes beyond
the old methods of just looking for eye-twitching during sleep. REM sleep
has three main areas that need to be obtained for counting as true REM. The
first is the activation of the brain, the second is the body/sensory
activity (motor output down - sensory input down), and the third is a
change in the neuromodulatory systems. Motor shut-down is experienced as
partial body paralysis, called atonia.
At this time, the only studies that have been able to measure all three of
these are studies with cats, but major advances in studying the first two
now allow researchers to more closely monitor the sleep in animals. These
new techniques have lead J.M. Siegel to re-examine some of the animals who
were said to not have REM dreaming sleep.

Who's dreaming the most?

Sleep itself is somewhat different for every species. Dolphins, for
example, exhibit slow circle-swimming, where they appear to allow half
their brain to sleep at a time. Birds are known to fly continuously for
days, and it is suspected that they have some kind of sleep or partial
sleep during this behavior. But all species show some form of sleep.

J. M. Siegel reports that the early studies of Zepelin and Rechtschaffen
(1974-1994) show that the smaller the animal the more REM sleep. Of course,
the smaller the animal the more sleep in general they get. Elephants and
giraffe sleep three to five hours, while the ground squirrel and brown bat
sleep seventeen and twenty hours. REM sleep varies from forty minutes a
day in cattle to seven hours a day in some opossum.

The amount of REM doesn't seem to be about being a more evolved mammal.
Primates with higher intelligence, abilities, and lifespan have less REM
than rats. And though the time per species seems fairly fixed, the time can
vary widely within an Order, indicating that it is not directly correlated
with the evolution of that Order.

Another interesting correlation is between altricial and precocial mammals.
Altrical animals are born too immature to care for themselves (cat, rats,
humans) while precocial animals like the horse and guinea pig can. The
altricial animals tend to have more REM, though it decreases as they age.
Precocial animals have less REM but the amount doesn't vary as much over
their lifetime. Siegel (1999) sites Zeplelin and Jouvet-Mounier on this
theory: "Zepelin showed that immaturity at birth is the single best
predictor of REM sleep time throughout life."
Just what this means is unclear. Does REM somehow function to help
undeveloped parts of the brain? We know that REM sleep is somewhat separate
from dreaming, and that dreaming can occur in other NREM states. It may be
that in the young and neonates that REM has more to do with finishing up
the job of hardwiring the brain and less to do with dreaming. Then later,
REM functions to help more with other aspects of brains functioning.

Do All Mammals Dream?

It appears that they (Birds, Mammals) all do dream if one's definition of
dreaming and REM are loose enough. However this is a fairly new viewpoint.

When the echidna spiny anteater was first studied, they couldn't find any
evidence for REM sleep. The researchers, Truett Allison and Henry Van
Twyver in 1970 concluded that the echidna had no REM sleep. This had a
major impact on theories of sleep evolution. (See Table 1) Of the three
mammal groups, two (placental and marsupial) had REM and one (Monotremes -
Echinda, Platypus) didn't have REM. This meant that REM must have
evolved ~after~ these three branches split (150-200 million years ago),
but while placental and marsupials were still together, as the possibility
of REM developing independently after the groups were separated seems less
likely than a common ancestor.

The Siegel Group re-tested the echidna with more sophisticated equipment
and looked into different brain areas of the creature, finding
eye-movements and twitching, but also something else. The echidna seemed
to have less strong REM like brain wave patterns, but had these
little-bursts more often. It was as if the creature was getting
micro-dreaming throughout the night.

The Siegel Group then tested another monotreme, the platypus. This was
very difficult as platypus does not do well in captivity and had never been
carefully tested before in a sleep-REM study. The platypus exhibited many
REM indicators, eye-movements, body atonia, and brain wave bursts
characteristic of REM. However, there wasn't the low voltage REM
characteristic of most mammals.

Siegel speculates that these differences in these two monotremes, echidna
and platypus, have to do with the way these creatures live. The platypus
dives down into deep burrows beneath the water and can afford long,
luxurious sleep. The Echidna lives on land in the sand and is never far
from danger. When danger does arise, the echidna attempts to burrow in the
sand. Siegel hypothesizes that any twitching of the quills of the echidna
in sleep would attract attention and not be very adaptive, and so this
aspect of REM is missing from its sleep behavior.

This speculation that REM changes with the predatory/prey conditions of an
environment has some grounding. In Allison's 1976 study, larger animals
sleep less and predatory animals have more REM. Also, herd and prey animals
have less REM.

Dolphins - Do they dream or not?

Early studies on dolphins (Flanigan, 1974) and other cetaceans seemed to
indicate that they didn't have REM. However, new studies (Mukhametov,
1995) now indicate that they do indeed exhibit REM. For instance, dolphins
allow half their brain to sleep while the other may be awake. This is often
what is happening in slow-circle swimming.

OK, so all mammals dream, what about reptiles?

The common ancestor of birds and animals are reptiles, so we might expect
that instead of developing REM independently of one another, that there was
a common reptilian ancestor with REM. But if they do have REM, it must be
quite different from mammalian REM. Reptiles don't have the brain
development of mammals and don't show the extreme EEG differences that
mammals do between wake and sleep. Further, reptiles don't seem to have
atonia during sleep. This means that the three measurements, brain
activity, input/output gating and neuromodulation are all going to be quite
different, if they exist at all. Reptiles don't even have a neocortex!

Some REM characteristics have been found in reptiles, including chameleons,
desert iguanas and caimans. But the experiments all had problems that have
left the question open. Were they in REM or just awake? Does slower heart
rate count as atonia? More studies are needed to determine if REM is
active in reptiles.

Conclusions

What we do now know is that animals and birds all exhibit something like
REM sleep. Yet some animals, such as birds and other animals, seem to only
have a common ancestor in reptiles. Is it possible that birds and mammals
developed REM independently of one another? Siegel feels this is unlikely,
or less likely than the theory of a common ancestor.

Over the next few months I will be including some descriptions of playing
cards that have been developed for dreamwork. Each article will include
two or three decks. Many thanks to Jill Gregory and the Dream Library and

Carla Houle's Angels in the Light
Angelic/Animal/Dream Cards

Carla was instructed on how to create these cards on a vision quest from
her angel guide Keeno. The cards come in five colors in a net bag. There
are black ink drawings on both sides, the back is a sketch of an angel. The
art is spontaneous, loose, childlike.

The other side of the cards each have a theme, a color coding and an
affirmation. For example, the Butterfly card is part of the Cosmic Five
series and states that it is about affirmation and change. "I am born to a
new time each day. I break out and emerge from my cocoon as a better being,
spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. I feel free and joyously happy. I
transcend to my higher self as I change and grow , emerging to new heights"
Small decorations and tokens are drawn in black ink.

The cards have drawings and paintings on one side, and information about
the image as symbol on the other side. The art is very uneven, some cards
(like the Giving and Receiving card) having fairly rich and colorful
pictures others like the fish card have simple monochromatic drawings. I
personally didn't quite get why. I could see a Desert card or Air or
something like that being simplified to fit the symbol, but there isn't a
rhythm here I could detect. It felt like a lot of attention went into some
images, and little to others.

themes of human fantasy, embodied through the ages in characters from the
winged go Mercury to the fictional hero Superman.
Flying is one of the most exhilarating dream experiences, and the sense of
elation that it brings can affect the dream's outlook for a long time after
the dream.
Embrace your flying dream. It is a reminder of your infinite spiritual and
psychological potential. If you can fly, then nothing is out of your reach.

I really liked the heavy duty but compact box the deck came in, which is
very heavy cardboard, with a dark blue and moon theme, opens at the top
instead of the typical face lift.

See amazon.com for flying card and deck

Subject: In My Room

This dream has repeated itself many times...different scenarios. I am going
to my bedroom, which is more like an apartment out of the 30's. A beauty
shop cropped up in the next room....very crowded and noisy. I again go to
my bedroom. It not only has pool tables in it, but guys are playing pool. I
am very frustrated and annoyed that these people and places have invaded my
privacy and feel like I have nowhere to go to escape the woes of the world.
Any clues?

Dear Anonymous,

Your dream was very interesting. The presence of your parents along with
your ex suggests that whatever problems you "bought into" with him are part
of your childhood and growing up patterns, not unique to the relationship
with him. He has gone but you "buy into" his living space....in other
words, you are not relinquishing the problems. The stormy waves suggest a
lot of powerful unconscious material, suppressed memories and unresolved
feelings surround these problems. Like starving dogs the problems may
attack if they are not tended to. But if you take care of a starving dog,
it will become your closest friend and staunchest protector. You have some
emotional growth ahead of you that may be painful and difficult, but well
worth your effort. I would suggest that you get involved in some expressive
arts, if you don't do that already. Your dream shows a rich capacity, a
strong spirit.

Dear Shadow,

These events really happened? Dreams that foretell death are not that
uncommon. Usually there is a stronger connection to the person. Perhaps
this man's feelings for you were stronger than your feelings for him at
that stage. His spirit could see death coming (all our spirits can, even
when it is a sudden accident) and found a way to tell you it's ok.

You may have a sensitivity for the spirit world that enabled this
communication. If you are not already involved in a religious or meditative
pursuit, you might consider exploring that direction for yourself. If you
do so, avoid the "dry" conventional churches and look for a "spirit-filled"
congregation.

Dear anonymous,

It's a little difficult to interpret this dream without your age and your
mother's age. I am assuming you are a young adult and your mother is
mmenopausal or post-menopausal. When we go through transitions in life,
such as from adolescence into adulthood, there is a small "death" of our
old self and a "borning" of our new self. The connections to parents have
to die for us if we are to become full fledged adults, and this dream may
have been about that "death", not actual death. It is wonderful that your
emotions are alive and well, enabling you to keep the love connections open
even when the "parent" connections die.

Dear Sick,

The fact that your husband is having these dreams does not mean he is
having sex with your daughter, but it does mean that he is at least
struggling with the issue. Are you able to talk with him about the dreams?
Can he talk about his feelings as a father of a blooming young woman? You
both should seek counseling together so that you can have those necessary
conversations. It's up to you to open the issue with him, assuming the
best, and if the worst is true, you will find out in the process. Your
daughter needs you to do this for her. God bless you!

Dear Surty,

Your dream seems to be telling you that you have neglected the softer, more
feminine side of your personality because you are afraid of the weakness
that is associated with females. You seem, in the encounter with your
female friend, to associate womanhood with chaos. The female nature is
often identified with dark, amorphous life. Are you involved in the arts?
Working with dark female imagery, lots of messy reds and browns, might be
very soothing for you.

Dear Eleni,

"Teeth falling out" is one of those classic dream images that almost
everyone has at one time or another. It is commonly believed that this is
related to stress in one's waking life, and a feeling of loss of control.
Is your life too busy? You might need to take a little "time out" now and then.

Just a possible alternative interpretation: Your husband might feel an
alienation from your daughter and is unhappy about that. His dreams may be
a way of feeling a strong intimacy that he doesn't feel in real
life. Often times when I am fighting with a friend, I have sex dreams
about them. It doesn't always mean sex. On the other hand, in case I'm
wrong...put a lock on her door. Tom

People who recur in our dreams are said to be parts of ourselves that we're
somehow neglecting in our waking life. I don't know what this guy means to

paper and pen, meditate on this man and picture him as clearly as you can,

fatten up this rat so that it will be of some nourishment to the python. I
proceed to cut up- something to feed to this starving rat. I stop and
notice that I have a hatchet and I just chopped some meat off to give to
this rat, but I then realized that I had just chopped the center part of

dream_text: Outside there are various buildings and a church, there are
enourmous polished spheres that move effortlessly, they don't seem to roll
but glide through the buildings which are then destroyed. A few of the
spheres have spikes on the surface but all of the spheres seem threatening.
I run into the church for sanctuary and seem to be safe from them for now.
The interior has highly detailed woodwork with intricate engravings and my
attention is directed on how fine and creative the work is. During the
course of the dream I still feel as though there is some intelligence to
the spheres as if they are searching for me. I am searching for someone
important I need to save while hoping to be saved myself.

dream_comments: I'm not sure how I can relate anything to these spheres,
they don't seem to correspond to anything recognizable, maybe simply
outside forces I have to contend with that seem insurmountable. I take the
church to mean I cannot ignore my spirituality while trying to deal with
adversity. Maybe I'm the one I'm trying to save.

dream_title: Misson
dream_date: 10-27-02
dreamer_name: buttercup

dream_text: My dream began with a knowledge that I was on an assignment
with my partner (my mom), to help someone in some way I'm unsure of. We
wern't the only ones with a misson, but then again, not everyone who
existed had one. The surroundings were very odd.The world had different
levels and altitudes, and the number of people existing on each level
decreased as you went up. My mom and I left right away, in a normal vehical
traveling straight upwards on what appeared to be railroad tracks. There
were two lanes. As we went up, the clouds became darker and I noticed there
were less people on the roads. We soon came close to a semi, who was ahead
of us in the other lane at first and then he was behind us but still in the
other lane. Then I watched his car flip, sparks flew, he fell of the
tracks, and I knew he was gone. I closed my eyes because I didn't want our
car to fall. I wanted to be at our misson site. I finally opened my eyes,
and told my mom maybe if we came off at level 6000, that we would reach who
we needed to. She agreed, we turned in on the next road, and arrived where
we needed to be. I don't know who we helped or how, but our misson was
complete.

dream_comments: In the beginning when we received the mission, both of us
knew the mission had great risk involved. We never spoke of the risks, we
just knew. Also, falling off the tracks at any of the higher levels, always
meant death.

dream_text: I keep a dream journal, which I always try to record them when
I wake up...if I even remember having one. Looking back through it, I saw
this one, and I still remember it vividly, because it seemed like it was
happening for real at the time. 'I had a disturbing dream last night that I
could only interpret as the end of the world....(armageddon?)....I was on a
beach, reading a book, with lots of other people enjoying the beach, when a
strong wind started to pick up, blowing sand and dust, the sky turned a
very ugly bruise-like yellowish gray, huge dark thunderous clouds rolling
in as it got windier and windier, the ocean started to roil, tidal wave,
and shoot up in geyser-like streams while the earth started shaking
something fierce, the water was rapidly rising and people trying to run,
all panicking, screaming, mass hysteria and strangely I just sat there and
resigned myself to the fact that this was the end, the water splashing
around me, and then I woke up in a start, my heart pounding.' It still
creeps me out.
