Hi
Don't forget that soon we will have the facility to play tracks by Artist
and Genre, so at that time you won't need to organise your own playlists for
this criteria.

Hi all,
Does anyone know whether or not empeg are going to do an IDE, or
something similar to allow empeg development and testing on a PC. i.e.
outside of the empeg environment. What would be really cool would be an
empeg emmulator. Has anyone written any ARM emulation code for the PC?

Hi everybody,
OK. The intro - 28, Systems Manager contracting in Zürich. That do ya?
And the question is...
I've got a new Golf cabriolet - the 8 speakers in it will do fine for the
moment, but what do I have to get in terms of an amp (suggestions of quality,
prices, what to look for etc.) and where would it sit/how would it be wired in
(I'm not going to do it myself, I'm just interested in the logistics of the
wiring). Also, how much should I pay for fitting?
Ideas? Thoughts?
Nick.
The problem with making the drives easily removable is that this tends not
to work hand in hand with the shock mounting requirements that we have,
within the space that we have available.
I'm not saying it's impossible, but it would be expensive.

Rob,
I think that this is admirable company policy. I'm sure other suppliers
wouldn't even make it possible for an end-user to add the own drives.
I fully understand your position on warranty and supportablity of the
product, I do work in Support after all!! It might be an idea in the
future to make the drives swappable, so they reside in a slide-in/out bay
accessed fro mthe rear of the device (somehow).
All credit to empeg.

Does the empeg automatically recognize a black or un partitioned drive or
are there jumpers or OS settings that need to be made in order to take
advantage of the new drive. In other words, if someone installs a new drive
into their own empeg - voiding the warranty in the process - will the empeg
be able to use it or will he still need to go to one of your service
centers where you let the OS know about the drive so it's usable?

To clarify this matter..
We won't fit your own drive to a player. Aside from being an administrative
nightmare (we have 10,000 people in line to buy one of these) this would
make it impossible for us to guarantee operation of the player.
We can, however, upgrade your player later on at one of our service centers.
This will not invalidate your warranty.
If you don't mind invalidating your warranty, or waiting until it expires,
you can fit your own drive at your own risk.

So let's approach the question from another angle! :) I know that the
above is what is stated in the FAQ (actually I have a further question
about that - below). What if I was prepared to invalidate my warranty
and install it myself? Are the mounts for the additional drive provided
with the empeg? Or is this done at the time the additional drive is
fitted by you guys?
Re: FAQ. I'd like to set up a monthly [empeg] charter that could
possibly include the URL of the FAQ and other usefull empeg related
URL's. Do you guys have any objection to that?

P.S. Off list replies are OK to last question! ;)
Just a quick question goin' out there!!
Does anyone know whether the guys at empeg will install an additional HD
for me when I buy my empeg if I supply it? Not because I'm tight fisted
or anything - more because I have a spare 3 gig unit hanging around.
Is this possible or if I want more space am I forced to buy an 'official'
extra drive?

Mark

Hi Dominic,
Yet more great advice!! ;) Actually, the car doesn't come with a stereo
at all :| Lot's of other neat little toys but that's for another forum!!
All it has in the double DIN space is a single height blanking plate and
a cubby hole thing for nick nacks. I'd be more than happy to let you
guys (at Cambs Audio) fabricate whatever is required as you certainly
seem to be a professional lot!! Navigation isn't something I'm really
into - but do you think you'd be able to fabricate a nice looking plate
for a turbo boost guage?

Are you planning on *just* fitting the Empeg, or are you hoping to keep the
original unit as well? If it's the former, then it shouldn't be a problem.
We work on a lot of imports these days, and tend to just fabricate a new
ABS backing plate that fits behind the dash, with a single DIN sized
cutout. One thing that will need dealing with is the lack of back support
for the unit. I did a similar job on an MR2 (for Mark, Kram on the Empeg
BBS, you'll probably have noticed his posts - he was one of the very first
on the waiting list), and managed to squeeze both the Empeg and a Carin
navigation unit/CD tuner into a Japanese double DIN aperture.

It WOULD be cool, but unfortunately, I can't ever see it happening.
Thatcham's criteria all but eliminate any possibility (armoured control
units mandatory, concealed fitment, etc). There are a few other potential
security enhancements though, that could definitely benefit both Empeg and
it's customers. For starters, the serial number of the unit really ought to
be hard coded into the unit somewhere - maybe even flashed up on the
display at boot time. As a dealer, we're not likely to see a vast number of
Empeg units in relation to other products, so a stolen Empeg could easily
be detected if we were made aware of the fact it was out there in someone
elses hands. As someone's said on the Empeg BBS recently, the option to
boot lock the unit using a user programmable code is probably also a good
idea. OK, so a clued individual could always overcome this, but it at least
goes some way to reducing the 'stealablity', and how many car thieves know
how to grab a Linux shell over a serial connection? ;-)

Dominic,
Thanks for the post!! Great work - you're a lucky guy to be involved
with the thing in such a variant way!!
I myself haven't bought a unit yet. I have been offered one by Empeg but
am waiting on a couple of things really!! I need approval from the
significant other (always a major one). She's like, 'What? The cheapest
one is 800 pounds?', of course, she calmed down when I told her it would
fit our entire CD collection on it plus about twice as much!! The major
stumbling block is that I'm getting a new motor around Christmas time!!
Actually, you can probably help me here. It's a Subaru Impreza WRX STi
and I was wondering whether you'd had any install experience on imports
of this kind. It's a Jap car with Jap Double DIN slots in the dash.
Will it be easy to fit the Empeg in there?
I'm very excited about the prospects for the Empeg product - especially
with regard to third party extensions. All we need now really is someone
to write some vehicle security software and to get it tested by
Thatcham!! Now that WOULD be cool :)

Hi Joel, and everyone else subscribed.
>Anybody already have an empeg that is subscribed to this list? What are
your impressions?
As some of you'll already know, if you follow goings on with the Empeg BBS,
I work for a UK car audio specialist. I'm also 27, and I've been in the ICE
industry for over ten years now, so I've seen a good few products come and
go. I'm not on the Empeg waiting list - unfortunately, my current financial
position means that I can't in any way afford to spend in the region of
1000ukp on a new source unit, especially given the fact I've already got a
pretty expensive system in my car. One thing is for definite though, and
that's the fact that, if I were a little better off, I'd be beating down
Hugo's office door to get my hands on one.
If you've been keeping up with goings on, you'll know that it was me who
carried out the install on Empeg's A-Class demonstrator (along with one of
my colleagues), and that I've also had a hand in quite a few other Empeg
installs, so I've now had the privilege of seeing the Empeg in various
specs, all it's different colours, and a range of installations. I've run
the Empeg with a quality ICE system, run it into the AUX in on an existing
radio cassette, fitted it with a 4-channel amp, and run an existing radio
cassette/CD into the Empeg's AUX in. All of that's meant I've probably seen
most, if not all of what it does, and tested all of it's features to some
extent.
So what's my overall impression? Fairly impressed, I have to say.
Given the fact it's literally gone from concept to reality in under 12
months, the product's actually much more finished than I'd anticipated.
People have criticised it's front panel for being a bit homemade looking,
and I have to agree to a certain extent. The second you power it up though,
it's easy to see why it's been made the way it has. Yes, it could still
benefit from a neater trim around the fascia display, but I can't see any
reason why one couldn't be retrofitted at a later date, as and when Empeg
have the financial stability necessary to invest what's going to be a
significant amount of money in having moulds produced, etc. The rest of the
unit though, just can't be faulted. I've seen a huge range of head units,
from every manufacturer imaginable, and I've never seen a case so solid, or
a quick-release cage so sturdy. The thing oozes quality.
The one key thing that really struck me though, was the sound quality. I've
got a reasonable system based around my home PC. The sound card's average,
but runs into a seperate amp, which pumps it's output through a pair of
Celestion 5 hi-fi speakers, and I've also got a self powered subwoofer
running off it. Outside of a PC showroom, it's probably the best sounding
PC sound system I've heard.
With all of that in mind, it was with more than a little uncertaintity that
I fired up the system in the A-Class for the first time. I needn't have
worried though - the sound was much clearer than I'd anticipated and, once
we'd set the system up a bit, the sound staging was very good too. The
A-Class is also running a sub via a fairly large amp, and it has to be
said, the bass is fantastically smooth - much better than on my home
system. OK, so a lot of that's down to the fact the ICE system's probably
slightly above average, and wasn't exactly done on a budget but regardless,
if the source unit isn't a competant performer, the system's not going to
sound any good no matter how much money you chuck at it.
My overall impression sound wise though, is that it's just unbelievably
listenable. I found a couple of tracks on the Empeg Hugo provided that had
you sitting back in the seat and listening. Not just listening to the
general noise of it all, but actually listening to individual instruments.
Only decent hi-fi does that.
From the operations point of view, I've not really found anything major
amiss with the unit. The early Betas had a few problems with them (balance
controls that worked the right way round, but logically, didn't seem quite
right, etc), but as time's passed, and I've seen a few more units pass
through our workshops, these have gradually been sorted out, and the unit
now seems to be somewhere near what I'd expect it to be for the general
consumer market. I read the Empeg BBS messages daily, and it annoys me
slightly at times to see people asking questions I personally consider
fairly trivial. Why doesn't the unit do "x"? - where x is something that's
obviously in the process of being developed by Empeg, or something that's
pretty obviously just a minor 'issue' with the Beta software. Maybe that's
just down to the fact I haven't spent a considerable amount of money on a
unit myself, or maybe it's just the fact I've been lucky enough to talk to
Hugo on more than a few occasions, and know that he's not the sort of
person who's likely to fall at the first hurdle when they start
encountering difficulties with the development.
The key thing though, that's very important to note at the end of the day -
I can honestly say that we could install it into the vehicles of any of our
customers, and they could make the most of it with just the barest of
demonstrations/instructional sessions. Get one, and you can confidently
expect to know your way around it in a matter of hours.
It's an exciting product, and one I'm personally trying to involved with at
every possible opportunity. In an ideal world, I'd like to buy one myself,
as I think there's a lot to be gained from user input, and as an
experienced end user, I can probably suggest more improvements than most
people. I've not even touched on it's real beauty though - the fact it's
Linux derived, and open source. Now units are shipping to end users, I hope
we'll start to see much more in terms of outside development. It's not the
current product that's exciting - it's the options that start to open up
when you put a 'PC' into a car, and only use a small percentage of it's
capabilities for it's main purpose. Now all we have to do is sit back and
wait to see who's the first person to come up with an RDS, RBDS, GPS, SMS,
vehicle monitoring, intrusion detecting, owner paging Empeg :-)
Dominic - who still can't make his mind up which colour's best, but at
least knows where Gordon lives ;-)
Hello All,
Just a quick introduction of myself as I am new to this empeg list (as is
everyone else I assume):
My name is Joel Hendley. I am 27, live in Southern Californa (Pasadena), and

I feel like I've been in on the empeg thing for quite a while now, I guess since

empeg soon!! Can't wait.
Anybody already have an empeg that is subscribed to this list? What are your

How do I like it? I like it. Sure it's buggy right now - mostly the emplode
software used to download to the unit and some of the player features don't
work, don't work right or are non-existent but it's great.
The most annoying thing is that the playlist navigation on the unit isn't
hierarchical yet, the playlist is flat with every single entry in it there
to scroll through. I've got probably 50 or sixty playlists so it takes a
while to get where I want to go. The radio I haven't used yet (no antenna
connection until I get it mounted in the car) but I understand that the
tuner features are very basic in this release of the software.
I've got the navigation pretty much down, didn't take long. It's easy to
learn and you can do about anything with the four front buttons that you
can do with the remote. The remote works well, but you have to push more
buttons than I'd like to change playlists.
All in all, it's great!

I haven't got my own empeg yet and when I do I'm sure I won't be selling
quite so soon!! So sorry on that one.
What are your plans for purchasing one?

Hello all,
As this list grows I hope to see it bloom into a 'proper' community where
we can all share ideas and learn what cool things empeg car developers
are doing with the software. I hope to have the guys from empeg signed
up too - just so they can listen in to the topics being discussed and
reply as and when they think it's necessary.
But firstly, although not compulsory, how about all the current
subscribers introduce themselves to the list - that way we know who we
all are!! :)
Ahh, so that means I have to do it too!! Hmmm, well I'm 25 (since last
Sunday!!) and work for an American Software company in London England.
Got into the empeg thing only quite recently and hope to have the
opportunity to buy one of these cool units soon!!
So how about you - what do you do?
