9 New Messages - New Questions

Description

Over the years we have been asked all kinds of questions regarding emus and emu farming ranging from a generalized "tell me everything you know" to specific questions about hatching, choosing livestock or basic costs. This group has been set up as a result of all those emails to provide a support group for the new emu farmer or hobbist, but also welcomes the established emu farmer willing to share information and ideas. Interested in expanding your operation to include emu but want to research first? You will be welcome here.

Emu farming is currently 'farm to finish'. This means that in addition to raising the bird, the farmer must also arrange for processing, sale of the meat and food by-products or arrange for production of finished products, which are then sold. If you have emus as pets, you are certainly welcome on the list, but please understand that some of us raise emus for their lean, heart healthy red meat.

This group will share info on emu husbandry issues as well as suggestions on making 'farm to finish' viable. Food by-products include fat, feathers, claws and the hide. Finished products include emu oil which is used in health and beauty products and leather products. Feathers and claws are used in crafts and in the fashion industry. The clean blown eggs are used by egg arists.

The emu is a ratite. Ratites are unique in having flat breastbones and being flightless birds. This family of birds include the ostrich, emu, rhea, cassowary and kiwi. The Latin name for emu is Dromaius novae-hollandiae.

When you apply for membership with this group, you will be sent an email asking why you want to join the list. If you do not reply to that email, we will not allow you to join the list.
