Hi,

I just want to share my experience with 420 EX. I'm not that much
an expert though...
Anyway, in my experience, what 420 ex lack is the manual control.
All you have is automatic with E-TTL. Not that E-TTL is bad, it's
just that sometimes you just want to light the subject's face with
low power, and all the 420 EX did was set the entire scene with a
perfect light, but not the light that I wanted (I forgot if 420 had
the manual zooming control or not).

I am now using the 430 EX, which only slightly more powerful than
420 EX, but I guess the ability to control the power manually
enables it to give full flash power. Haven't tried the 580 EX, but
I believe it's more powerful than 430 EX, in terms of light power
and features.

I don't really get what you mean by "issues indoor with lighting",
but from my experience, as the flash is always in automatic, the E-
TTL gives the reading of ambient lighting and that makes the subject
is underexpose. But that's only my assumption.

Another thing, I also have the Metz 44AF3, which will work only in
manual with EOS 20D, but works perfectly on my EOS 30 (film). And
yes, if you're looking at the result of EOS 30 (Sensia 100) with
44AF3 and 20D with 420 EX, the result from 20D is a bit
underexposed (about 1/3 to 1/2 stop I think).

My suggestion, try all those flashes before you decide. You had a
digital SLR, you can see the result instantly :-)

Cheers,

Sony

I have a 420EX, I've used it for weddings with the 17-85
and 24-70 lenses and a Fong diffuser, it works fine for
shots indoors with a white ceiling or wall within 10 feet.
I've also rented a 580EX and used it for weddings. For me
the main reasons to get the 580ex were:

-recycling time (and external battery packs)
-able to control other flashes remotely (very nice!)
-more power (but not that much)

In cases where I really needed more power, I used a couple
of sunpak 544's or 750 watt second monolights.

If your 420EX is underexposing, we'd need more info about
the actual shooting conditions. You might try raising your
ISO, on EOS you can go up to 800 and get pretty good
results, sometimes I even use 1600. The 580 is brighter,
but not as much as you may think. If your shots are more
than 2 stops underexposed, you may want to change something
else, like trying a F 1.8 lens, or if you're shooting
outdoors bright sun fill flash, try using the high-speed
sync, it can do wonders like F4 at 2000th.

Good luck!

Whether the 420EX is "strong enough" depends on the subject
you are shooting, the distance from the flash to the subject,
the ISO setting on your camera, and the aperture setting of
your lens.

In other words, some more information would be more helpful.

Adding an EF 2x II magnifies the central 50% of the original
image. The electronics also force the camera to reduce the
focussing speed, as well as reporting the two-step reduction
in effective aperture.

If you already have a 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM, buying an EF 2x II
would make sense. However, if you intend to shoot at 300mm or
400mm most of the time, that would justify a dedicated long
telephoto lens.

While I do not have a 70-200 IS USM, I can comment on the
EF 200 f/2.8 L, the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM, and the
EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM.

Why not consider getting the 100-400IS USM? It's not a 2.8 but then
again as you're using a 2x extender your 2.8 will become a 5.6...

Can anyone out there tell me?? on the canon 20D camera adding the Canon
Extender EF 2xII to a 70-200 2.8 IS USM lens degrades the quality of
the picture??. I know that I will give up a few F stops and certain
autofocus features do not work. But what I was wanting to know, if
there is anyone out there that has used both of these lens together and
do you have any sample pictures. I would be mostly using the combo for
wild life photography and occassional sports photography!!. I have
heard some sales reps in camera stores say " you need to buy another
lens". I wanted to find out if buying an extender is worth it???.
Collecting all the info I can, any resources shared is greatly
appreciated.

Hi Hilary,

For basic information about camera operation, try a basic photography
course. You could start with the articles at http://photo.net/learn/

Your question about "Reddish tint" brings up a lot of possibilities.
It might help to post a small copy of the picture (for instance,
using the Group's Photo's area).

How did you view the image? On the camera LCD? On a television?
On the computer monitor? Or on photographic print?

Sincerely
Julian Loke

Suit yourself. These clubs are topic oriented. Don't need such
solicitations from a digital camera site. I wonder what Canon would
think? In a couple of other Canon digital camera groups, members
posting these notices, which are way off topic, just get banned.

Anybody wanting this can go either to a dating site or other sites,
depending upon specific wants.

I am tempted. But I wouldn't be if I already owned a 20D. I don't
feel that the improvements are minor.
1. Spot metering - if you don't already know, you might be
flabbergasted to learn how useful this can be!
2. A 2.5 cm monitor (vs a 1.8 cm monitor) - now if they only made the
monitor as versatile and useful as the ones on the G series APS
cameras - well so much for dreaming.
3. A more rugged shutter system - 100,00 cycles.
4. A more flexible control system for exposures.
5. MSRP somewhat lower than the 20D!

Personally, I don't have the money for the 17-55 f/2.8 - which I
believe is almost as expensive as the camera body. Seems to me that if
I want those features - reported to be equivalent to an "L" series
lens, then perhaps I'd also want a more upscale camera body. Well you
may disagree, but for my use, I'm still not convinced that the 17-85mm
IS USM is so terrible, as some have indicated.

I'm a 10D owner who resisted the 20D. After the 1D mk.2 N and 5D came
out, I was sure a "20Dn" wouldn't be far away. I'm really interested
in the 30D now.

Or I may buy a Volkswagen GTI as a substitute.

Hi Jeff,

I guess you also gave up on Photoshop Elements slow and
painful Image downloader!

I have a utility called "Image Transfer" that came with
my Sony P&S camera. Yes, it also works well with my EOS 20D,
provided I tag the Compact Flash card.

Before you spend money on ACDSee or Breezebrowser, etc,
Have a look at Microsoft SyncToy:

Hi Jeff,

With what program are you downloading images to your laptop?
Do you use a flash card reader?

My computer just sucks all the files, then deletes them from
the Compact Flash card.

For me, there's only one killer feature of the 30D... the
ability to have more than 100 images in one folder, I shoot
weddings and find that I have to really concentrate when
moving images to my laptop from CF cards halfway through
the wedding.... the chance of forgetting one folder is
something that always scares me whenever I'm about to

Otherwise, I'm happy this may make the 20D even cheaper...
I could use a backup...

The lens does seem nice though...

Hi Guillermo,

There is a push-button switch in the battery compartment that is activated when
you close the battery cover of the EOS 20D, or when you mount the BG-E2
securely.

Unfortunately, the switch mechanism is vulnerable to disconnection when you
use your camera by holding the BG-E2 grip. My fix is to apply some material
(plastic or paper) to push harder on the switch.

I will cross-post at the EOS20D group for follow-ups:
  http://yahoogroups.com/group/eos20D

Is there sufficient interest for this be new EOSdoc document? Any volunteers?

Sincerely
Julian Loke

Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out this weekend. My
two clubs each bought a nice projector within the last few months
(different models) at recommended resolution (without breaking the
bank). Yet I don't see the same clarity as a good slide projected to
the same size.

The amazingly cheap (read that as FREE unless you choose to make a
donation) and very powerful IrfanView (www.irfanview.com) would be my
first suggestion.

Or there is SlideShowToGo from http://www.nightwatchsoftware.com/ which
is shareware but is also very powerful.

My two photography clubs have each bought digital projectors. We are
still looking for a good simple software (and reasonably cheap) to
give slide shows. Understand this not for pre-building a slide show.
This would be for allowing members to bring their pictures on a CD or
usb memory device and simply show the files in an efficient manor,
with the usually manual control and automatic options. Please don't
suggest the Microsoft viewer in XP, it's simply not enough for club
use.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
