I am unable to add the results of Julian's Autofocus Sensitivity Test
for my camera to the test page
(http://eosdoc.com/manuals/?q=AFSensTest) - the button does not seem
to work for me, I hope it is acceptable to add them here instead?
Perhaps someone can copy this to the test page?
Camera: Canon EOS 40D
Lens: EFS 17-85 4-5.6 IS USM (Kit lens)
Metering: Evaluative
Autofocus: One Shot
Patch where autofocus was achieved: 13

Thankyou

What do you want this software for? I only use Canon's Digital Photo
Professional and Adobe's Photoshop, and consider these to be enough for my
processing needs.

Subject: [eosdoc] EOS Utility Software
I just purchased the EOS 1DS Mark III and installed the EOS Digital
Solution Disk. The EOS Utility 2.2 will always give the error of The
software has encountered a problem and will close. No additional
information is available. The other Canon software installed with no
problems. I have uninstalled and cleaned out any empty folders along
with any Canon reference in the Registry. Windows Xp Sp2 with 2gb ram.
I had previously used the soulution disk with a EOS 1DS Mark II, It
worked with no problem. I called and spoke to Canon T/S today with no
results, we did the EOS Utility upgrade software on the Canon web
site. No change.
I would appreciate any ideas. I am ready to pull out whatever hair I
have left on my head.

Hi, I bought a new Canon M80 on E-Bay from a distributor in Japan.
Problem is the manual is in Japanese. I need one in English.

I have just downloaded what appears to be an excellent handbook at the
Speedlite 420 EX, but unfortunately it is in GERMAN and I don't speak a word
of German. Is there an English equivalent of this document? The only
handbook I got when I purchased my Speedlite was a brief one, not as
comprehensive as the one you have featured . so I guess I am looking for the
English version of the German one!
Any pointers much appreciated!

Hi Everyone,
Conrad Erb has written and illustrated instructions to repair
the flash hot shoe on an EOS 20D.
http://eosdoc.com/manuals?q=FixHotshoe
The Geocities host of the Javascript Lens Calculator is experiencing
"problems". I moved the calculator to eosdoc:
http://eosdoc.com/manuals?q=jlcalc
I also did some overdue site maintenance, particularly the PHP
code to do with comment and error logging. This particular part
did not transition well when moving the site from Dave Burrow's
server with ASP to the current site with PHP.
That is it for now. If anyone has an idea for a new EOSdoc
document or feature, please let me know on this forum.
Cheers
Julian Loke
Hi Bob,
I sense the beginnings of an EOSDOC document, based on our discussions
here.

On my EOS 20D (with CF4=0), exposure metering with the "*" button
behaves like your description of the G3.
It would be an important observation if your EOS 30D does something
different. First be sure that CF4=0, because the behaviour changes
with other settings of CF4.

Remember that Canon EOS works more naturally if you meter first,
then focus.
And on the EOS 20D, using CF4 with flash results in a crucial loss
of the FEL (flash exposure lock) function.
Does this happen with the EOS 30D?
Cheers
Julian Loke
Thank you, Julian, for your thoughful reply. I'm not questioning the
correctness of the users manual, but rather how, not what, it says.
For example, the star button doesn't work the way it does on a top of
the line powershot. You must hold it down, for example, to lock a
setting. On my G3, when you press and release the star button, the
exposure setting is locked as to EV; any manual change in shutter
speed, for example, will cause a compensating adjustment in aperture,
what is referred to as "program shift" into the 30D reference manual.
the EV remains locked until you press the star button again, take a
picture, or perform another action which specifically aborts the lock.
If the author of the 30D manual would simply say "press and hold",
rather than leaving you to guess, that would be better. That author
needs to learn how to write clearly.
The explanation of custom function #4 contolling the AE & AF lock may
be correct. But although it is concise, it is also obtuse and
incomprehensible. A very active member of the Canon 20D group, Chuck
Norcutt, is a real font of knowledge. He explained it to me clearly
and concisely. Why can't the Canon writers!?! Go figure....
In general, the issue is that this manual is not written to instruct,
but rather simply as a reference, which is probably all you need if
you're upgrading from a 20D, which is probably a waste of money since
the two cameras are very similar. But if a person is coming from
another camera, with a substantially different user interface, such as
my G3, or perhaps a Rebel, then the writing style of this book is
unacceptable. The book should have been written to instruct and
inform. Giving meaningful tips as to the Camera's use would also be
helpful. The existing book is nothing but a reference manual, great
if you already know the camera, but are subject to forgetfulness!
I hope I've not been rambling too much.
Oh well, it appears to be a great camera, despite its nerdy interface
and poorly written manual. I would have expected better, given the
price of the equipment!

Hi Bob,
Thank you for suggesting a new document for eosdoc.
I currently have an EOS 20D, with equivalent CF4 and CF17.
The manual is terse, but correct.
Perhaps you can explain what is causing the confusion, and which
parts could be made better? If you could put together a list of
questions, someone (probably me) could try to write something
that would provide illumination.
Did you also try reading these:

Just went thru (several times) the 30D. To say that the section on
custom functions is obscure would be a compliment! The custom
functions #4 and #18, relating to auto exposure and auto focus would
appear to be important, but for me, at least, nearly incomprehensible.
Can anybody make reference for me, a better, clearer explanation of
these functions.
PLEASE HELP!!!

Most films now are dx coded, it just makes it easier to get the
correct ISO rating by letting the camera detect it. The camera by
default is set to read dx coded films, so it sets the correct ISO.
To check what your camera is set to, turn the Command dial to CF,
rotate the dial near the shutter untill it shows C03, you should see
either 0 or 1. 0 means dx coding is enabled, 1 means you set the
film speed manually.
To set speed manually, press ISO function button,ISO appears in LCD
panel, rotate dial near lens untill required ISO speed appears, depress
the shutter button halfway to register this ISO rating
