Re: [epcc] Interesting Network Problem

It helps if both computers are on the same Workgroup. Check this by right clicking on My Computer and going to Properties.   Select the Computer Name tab and click on the CHANGE button. Put everything on the same Workgroup.

That should get both computers on the same Workgroup.  The next thing you need to consider is permissions. Let us know if you can’t access the other computer and we can help with that.

Permissions are always a pain. And rightly so because you want to be sure that access to your computer is not compromised.

System Description:

Primary Computer: HP a6220n running either Vista Home Premium or XP
Professional (problem occurs with either OS).

Secondary Computer: Generic AMD-1200 running XP Professional

The two systems are connected to a Belkin router and both of them can
access the Internet through it (DSL access). But the two systems
cannot talk to each other. The Secondary system can "ping" the Primary
system but the Primary cannot ping the Secondary.

I believe that the Workgroup and Computer names are set correctly.

I strongly suspect that it is the Vista Home that is giving the problem. Vista has an entirely different security schema, where it wants to lock everything...

The problem with the network is not as uncommon as you may think. I have seen that problem with one system prior to VISTA. It is not necessarily due to...
