Basically an instant blog.  Totally Free.  Really simple to add.

They will print in a weblog the text of your message, plus any attachment you put on it.
And you can moderate the additions.
(Sounds about the same as  http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/epcc/ but this is in Blog format.)

You can add to your blog from your blackberry, cell phone.
You can attach any type of file and it will post along with the text of your email.
Handles photos, MP3's, documents and video (both links AND files)

Some programming teams are making instant blog pages for their projects
 using Posterous. http://www.reformingprojectmanagement.com/2009/05/28/985/

You can try sending to my test site, and then we can see what it is like.  Just email   mailto:post@...

And then we can see how these were added and the cumulative effect at http://jvoris.posterous.com/

I understand the meeting on Wednesday night was excellent, the presenter did not
make it and Michael saved the meeting, from what I hear.

Linux is something I need to get more involved with, and coming from that system
Ubuntu is what I really want to learn. Sorry to have missed the meeting, even
from the hospital I hear Wednesday night was a good meeting, active with some
good participation.

Thank you Michael for making it a good night with your clear explanations and
examples of what Ubuntu is and what it can do. Sounds like you need to get
ready for part two.

Where did Nate go?

Someone asked me what is a "Lightning Talk" ?

Lightning Talks represent a much smaller investment of time than a full presentation, and offer you the chance to share your "neato" thing without the heavy commitment of a real presentation.  Lightning Talks should emphasize your single biggest bang-for-the buck idea quickly.

Use this as an opportunity to give a talk for the first time, or the first time on a new topic. For a Lightning Talk, slides or documentation are not required, but if you do decide to make slides you only need a few.

Lightning Talks may just be interesting or useful websites that others should know about.

I received this from someone I don't know, but have met. He seems to be true
to his word. I can help if you want to donate. His email originally came
from www.freecycle.ort - we had a presentation on that a few years ago.

Here goes ....

I am a business and computer science teacher at a West Philadelphia High
School. I am starting an effort to get used computer equipment in the hands
of my students. Any equipment, Macintosh, Pentium II Windows or newer will
be cleaned, refurbished, and redistributed to a family that needs it.
Monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, and other equipment is also requested.
Please contact me if you want to donate to this worthy cause. I am also
interested in partnering with local business owners to get used equipment.
Eventually I would like to establish, or work with, a non-profit or charity
to offer receipts for tax purposes, but that is not available right now. My
email is hescribner@.... I will return all emails that I get. Anyone
wishing to donate time to help refurbish equipment can also help. If you
are called to give financially, please do not offer cash, gift certificates
or gift cards to PC Warehouse, Best Buy or any other equipment source would
be great. I do not want to handle any cash or be responsible for taking
monetary donations until I am affiliated with a charity. I want to make
sure that 100% of all donations are turned around to people that actually
need them. I will take no salary for this as well. Any equipment not
readily usable will be used for parts. My effort is for basic office
functions for each family, but I am also trying to secure a source for free
or cheap access to the internet eventually.

Thanks for your help. I realize there are other groups that may have
similar missions in the area, but as I have some contacts in Philadelphia,
and I am trying to help my school's community specifically, I am keeping
this effort small and controlled for now. Hopefully some other agencies
will help too. Any advice is also welcome!!

doing computer repair and he's presented for EPCC in the past.

Check out www.5Dradio.com. The show is broadcast on Saturday mornings at 8

site. Tell Gene (gene@...) that I sent you.

Call him or send him an email with your question or comments. The phone
number is 610-590-0451 - that's in the southeast Pennsylvania area and may
be a toll call for some EXCEPT if you have free weekend minutes on your cell

Also - let me and Gene know what you think about the show. I think most of

Definitions: POP = Post Office Protocol = a connection from the client on your PC (Outlook or Outlook Express)
SMTP = Simple Mail Transport Protocol = the format of messages.

The bottom line is that regardless of your ISP provider, you can use the popular GMAIL as a repository for email, and manage it from a web interface or from your PC client software.  (My ISP also has this functionality, but there are a few ISP's that do not have this capability, and only provide one or the other.)  The other feature for an ISP is access from outside your area code, which was to be the subject of Monday's meeting.

Another "for instance", Yahoo mail is an additional charge to merge your yahoo mail with other POP servers.
-====================================-
Gmail outage - but not for Outlook users
Saul Hansell at the New York Times is reporting on an outage on the popular Gmail service.
The Gmail breakdown happened at the start of the working day in Europe and lasted until about lunchtime. Early risers in the USA might have noticed the problem too.

What’s interesting to us is that the problem seemed to be with the Gmail web interface – the underlying email technologies were reportedly working fine.

That means Outlook users who connect to Gmail via IMAP or POP/SMTP could continue using their email, bypassing or even unaware of the problems Google was having.

You can receive/send email from Gmail into many email clients including Outlook using POP/SMTP. Google has instructions for Outlook 2007, Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2002 (XP) – the latter can be applied to earlier versions of Outlook too.

For a full synchronization of Gmail folders with Outlook, choose the IMAP option. Google has instructions for Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003.

Another choice is to forward Gmail messages to another account which can then be imported into Outlook.
It’s not clear what happened to Gmail users using a browser with the new offline service option. At worst there browsers where ‘offline’ – no new messages arrived and outgoing messages where held until a connection could be established.

We like Gmail a lot but it’s best not to rely on it alone – this event has highlighted the wisdom of having alternative methods of accessing your email, whomever hosts it.

John – looking at Staples’ site, they indicate that your printer uses the following:

HP 78 for color; the A version holds more ink than the D version
HP 15 for black – from your message I assume that you have that cartridge already.

Sorry, but I don’t have any used or empty cartridges.

In fact, I have about a dozen of these GOOD OLE' BOYS (PS2 keyboards) in

My problem is that the newer PC's (laptops) require USB for everything,
including keyboards, and I hate trashing something that still works and
never goes out of style.

So here is an off the wall question? I just googled up connectors that
goes from PS2 Keyboard to USB , but has anyone ever tried these?

And to really show my age, how about them fat 9 pin connector that
predates PS2 keyboard connecters? They go back to the PC XT (DOS) days.
I have one that I used until the PC died last year, and it even has a
keyboard extension cord for that plug!

Sometimes the feature list on a new UPS are worth the extra bucks.
In November, Staples had $30 rebates on old equipment exchanged with a new purchase,
and I got a $30 rebate for my old UPS.  I thought the new features and my time to install batteries
outweighed the added cost.   You may want to consider waiting/looking for similar
discounts.  But you are weighing the risk of a winter storm shutting off or spiking power vs. a
summer storm doing it.  ( I assume the bigger risk is always the summertime.)

Reply:

DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface (go to Webopedia.com and enter DVI for an explanation)

Newer Computers Use DVI Connectors instead of VGA connectors.  You don't have to buy new projectors.  You can buy an adapter or a cord with DVI one end and VGA on the othere.

DVI does have some advantages which are explained on the Webopedia.com site

At Staples, for $15 - a voice recorder the size of a USB Thumb Drive -
that is an MP3 player. (2 gig of storage I believe).

It's main function is to play 8 hours of songs, or store 8 hours of
voice recordings in WAV format. It has a pinhole microphone on it, and
it is standard USB interface. Not exactly what you are looking for, but
the portable voice recorder is what I need.
I am going to be playing with it a little in the next couple of weeks,
and can let you know how it works.

Also, I could not resist getting the San Disk 8 Gig USB thumb drive at
