The Address toolbar no longer appears on the taskbar after you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
The Address toolbar has been removed from the taskbar in Windows XP SP3 in response to an issue that was raised by a regulatory agency.

While many people do not use the address bar, I've found it to be an invaluable tool.  It gives me several advantages.

1. I can start the Internet Browser and go directly to any web page by typing the web address.  No need to start IE first.  Just type the address - i.e. type Extonpc.org and it will start the Internet browser at Exton PC's home page.
2. I can start an Internet search by just typing a phrase like - Hard Drive - and it will bring up the default search page for Hard Drive on the Internet.
3. I can type a path for my computer and it will automatically access the directory or file.  For example if I type -  c:\downloads - I instantly see the directory with all my downloads.

Microsoft's suggestion as a workaround is to install and use Windows Search.  While this feature may have some uses, it's certainly not a substitute. 

While I did not have any other problems with WindowsXP SP3, loss of the adress toolbar on the taskbar was more than I was willing to bear.  I uninstalled SP3 on the one computer that had the SP3 update.

If Microsoft update or Windows update has not offered SP3 for your Windows XP machine you should read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955307.

If after reading and making sure none of the reasons apply, then go ahead and install it if you want.  However, if you're not having problems with SP2, why bother.  From what I've read there's no great benefit for the average user.

Does anyone have experience with SP3? Is it appropriate to install at

There are many computer stories in the big city.  This is but one of them.

But it is a doosie.  And one that shows how NOT to run a network - they broke a lot of common sense and Sarbanes Oxley rules that are standard practices in the industry.

The problem with the network is not as uncommon as you may think.  I
have seen that problem with one system prior to VISTA.  It is not
necessarily due to VISTA, but I would not discount that possibility.
There can be several causes.  Sometimes they can be difficult to run
down.

1. The router by its nature tends to protect incoming transmissions.
You need to make sure your router setting includes the mac address of
network cards.  It will automatically choose one but not necessarily
the second.
2. You mention a Belkin router but do not state if it also has
wireless transmission.  This can require some special settings.
3. While you may have to hold the line for a while, most of Verizon
tech support guys are very good (assuming your DSL is Verizon).  They
also have the ability to log onto your system if you allow it.
However they may not support third party routers.

I strongly suspect that it is the Vista Home that is giving the problem.

Vista has an entirely different security schema, where it wants to lock everything down that is not in "My Documents", which adversely affects programs (like IBM Emulation that want to put keyboard maps into the product installed folder under My Programs).

I know that I have mucho problems with XP Home not often being seen my Win2000 Pro and XP Pro.

My VPN connection to one client does not work on XP Home.  And the corporate IT help desk does not support XP Home for remote workers.

Windows XP, Service Pack 3 (SP-3) is now available. MS was going to post the
update last week but found a flaw. It affected Microsoft Dynamics Retail
Management System (RMS).  If you're using that, don't load the update.
Additionally MS added a filter to the Windows Update that recognizes if
you're running RMS so that the update won't be downloaded.  I received this
info from ComputerWorld.

I'm loading it on a machine now. I'll let you know if I have problems or
not.

fabulous EPCC discussion group, here are two on-line computer forums that I
am active with.  You can get free help for PC problems. If you register,
tell them that I sent you.

1) www.kickenhardware.net - although based in the Philly area, they have
many members from other countries. There is also a social side with this
forum if you just want to chat about whatever. Additionally, they have a
PalTalk room on Wednesday nights where you can actually talk to other users
who will help to solve your PC problems.

2) www.freepchelp.co.uk - this is based in the UK. Not as many U.S. users as
Kickenhardware, but none the less helpful. This site is a bit newer.
However, it is growing rapidly. This site gets to the heart of your
technical questions quickly for a fast resolution.

The advice on both sites is top-notch. Many users, including myself are in
the computer business and are members of both forums.  Both sites are very
friendly to the novice user and appreciate help from the advanced user. If
you sign up, let me know and I'll tell you what my user name is on each
site.

Already know how to remove scrolling from "Programs" which shows in columns in the start menu. 

However could not find a way to do the same with "Favorites"

Does anyone know if this is possible? 

I see others have been searching for this answer.

I have a bunch of old ram and computer parts.

I feel bad tossing it so does anyone have a suggestion on what to do
with it?

It's PC100 to PC266 about 10 sticks. And the PC parts are all over in

Updates - download and follow instructions to install.  You should be
running version 1.5.2
Would not recommend checking beta updates or all languages.

contacting support at http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

After you run the Spybot scan, make sure the problem is selected with
a check mark in the box, then click on Fix Selected problems.

It sounds like you ran the scan but didn't follow through.

Spybot should delete or fix this for you.  Are you using the most recent
version?

You may want to run AdAware, which is free.

By now, most people have heard about the two European scientists who are sharing this year's Nobel Prize for Physics for their work in giant magneto resistance (GMR) in 1988.  It is this research that bumped the hard drive manufacturing community to the new technologies that we see as commonplace today.

It reminds me of an 1999 article I wrote for the EPCC newsletter that concluded, of the top 10 improvements in computing seen during EPCC's first 15 years, Duh! - large hard drives are the biggest, bestest thing which influenced our time.  It is also interesting to note how their scientific work moved from lab to household environments of 1999 in a scant ten years, and which is still seen in things like the iPod movement of this decade.

Once in a while, it is nice to have the rest of the world see what you see, huh?  So what predictions (or at the least, appreciations) should we make about the upcoming decades that EPCC will see?  More complicated web sites with AJAX interactivity and Web 2.0 additions ?  Off-site storage and off-site computing ? Software-as-a-service and software for free? Yes.  Webcams and You Tube and VoiceOverIP, Not so much.

Besides the 'pros' being advertised to entice you into purchasing the
Apple iPhone, the downsides are worth a mention.

Understandably, the iPhone is pricey.  Aside from the cost of the device,
there are other downsides to the iPhone.

There's the compulsory phone service contract.  Exclusive phone
contracts with a single provider - in the USA you must be connected to
AT&T to use the iPhone.  Even though the iPhone is a GSM device,
reportedly other SIM cards won't work in it.

Despite the high price, the iPhone doesn't support the higher speed
phone networks which is a pity given the nifty web browsing features.
The iPhone won't work at all without a phone contract and activation -
some people wanted to use their iPhone for the media playing functions
alone but that's not officially allowed.

You can't change the battery, for unlike most mobile phones the iPhone
battery is a fixed part of the unit.  Since the battery is often the
first part of a portable device to wear out, this is a major problem.
But Apple has done the same thing with iPod's for years and people seem
to accept it - Microsoft's Zune has the same problem but Pocket PC's
have replaceable batteries.   It's a blatant example of built-in
obsolescence.

There's one more iPhone 'con' but it's not Apple's fault - on the
web and in spam you may see offers of 'free' iPhones - need we tell
you these are almost certainly scams and not worth you clicking on?
