Re: [esfarmdog] Re: Thoughts on ES as "inside" or "outside" dog
We got home from Shels last eve, just past ten, I put a crate in the bedrm where Lady and I sleep and Argyll slept there quietly all night, in the morning I took Lady out first, then came back and got the little guy and took him out, he piddled a couple times and we came back in and he had breakfast, or half of it, he looked around a bit and curled up, it was a long day, an hour later we went back out and he squatted again, he walked some more and finally he made a small pile, its a matter of keeping an eye on them and getting them outside before their body tells them its time for relief, accidents will happen but they'll get fewer.
He may be in for a name change, I keep calling him Buddy, we'll see. Right now he is curled up by the chair, he had a very long day yesterday with a lot of major changes. He loves the kong with the paste inside.

Dave- do you crate him when he is in the house? The pups have been used to being outside since they were little. When we would bring in pups, we would crate them and then send them out to potty before letting them have any freedom in the house. When they were little and inside, they did use papers.
Unfortunately, because the housebreaking is taking place at an older age, it may take a bit longer, but it can happen.
Depending on the weather, our dogs are outside quite a lot and if we had a barn, they probably would prefer being there most of the time.

"Chester" who I believe was an ES but without papers or history was a great puppy who was very neat in the house and loved being with us inside and out - till he got to be about 1 year old then he decided "outside" is where he wanted to stay. We have had other dogs who also decided they wanted to stay "outside" 24/7. Aulay our new ES pup does not seem inclined to housebreaking and thus we are keeping him outside. Loose when we are home and in kennel at night and when we are not around. He seems fine with this routine. What is everyone's experiences? P.S. we have another dog who is "inside/outside" and she is kinda fussy (doesn't like her coat wet, ect.
