Snow and Icy Cold 18 Feb 2008 15:18:00
Despite sunshine today, temperatures remain below zero in most parts
of the country. Snowfall continues in Eboia, the Cyclades and Crete.
Athens-Lamia and Athens –Korinthos national roads have opened to
vehicular travel, including lorries, however, snow chains are
requested in many parts of provincial roads. Tens of villages are cut
off while there is power cut in some regions.
Conditions in Attika are gradually returning to normal but citizens
should be careful of potentially slick roads. Blue and trolley buses
are running in some routes while the suburban train, the tram and OSE
(Hellenic Railroads) are running on their regular schedule. The
electric train is operating and expected to extend its routes while
the METRO will operate on 24 –hour basis. Some scheduled flights are
departing with difficulties from Eleftherios Benizelos Airport. Ships
remain ancored at Rafina port while only closed type ships are
sailing from Piraeus port to Argosaronikos islands.
Athens, Piraeus and East Attika prefectures announced that schools
will remain closed on Tuesday. The state mechanism is still placed on
the alert and according to the Civil Protection General Secretariat
citizens' assistance cases are being successfully dealt so far.
The good news comes from the Meteorological Service, which has
forecast gradual abatement of bad weather, however, icy cold will
stay tomorrow mainly in central and northern parts of the country.
Citizens are advised to take precautions and avoid vehicular travel
and to use snow chains where necessary."

Is that possible? From the sat links it seems the system toward Greece
has an mcs-mcc that expanding very southerly. If this happens we are
talking about supercells, tornadoes and destructions down there because
of the sahara's dryline. So let's see...
Makis,Athens...cloudy,cold and high winds!
Nothing special though, missed the best shot which came a fraction after the
30sec shutter closed. From now one always back to Bulb setting :s
Storms are early this year, and there was already a pretty strong lightning
event just a few weeks ago. During that event and most likely also last
night, there was a tornado involved (originating from low-topped
supercells). Last night it seems the towns of Dendermonde and Lier
(Flanders, Belgium) were hit. A few weeks ago it was the town of Peer,
further east in Belgium.

Its kinda of weird what im going to say, but as long as the security
and hazard measures are high, it has a positive matter the climate
change. The severe events all over Europe are becoming more and more.
Althought that costs the snow spells in Greece, i would kill to
experience situations like these...

On the evening of january 21st, a tornado swept throuhg Peer, in the east of
Belgium.
Damage path was narrow and long, with some roofs half damaged, the other
half being ok. A small pickup truck was displaced for 2 meters, and some
walls/roofs collapsed. At first I thought of a downburst, but nearly all
evidence and atmospheric conditions and radar data favour a tornado, not a

Adverse weather conditions have been prevailing in Macedonia and
Thrace since Monday morning. Floods were recorded at Makri, Evros,
where people were trapped. At the same time, the intercity railway to
Athens, carrying 70 passengers has been immobilized due to the high
water level in the area. In parallel, Samothrace is without electric

Strong storms and winds prevailed in Thessaloniki, Halkidiki and
Pieria last night. Due to the adverse weather conditions in Pieria a

"Extreme meteorological phenomena with powerful rains and
thunderstorms affect from the afternoon of Sunday a lot of regions of
northern Greece. According to the meteorologists, meteorological will

In Thessalonica the possible downpour and the powerful winds had as
result of breaking a tree in the road Mitroy'si and of crashing a

statement on aid of north-western winds from the afternoon of Sunday,
with which it called the governors of small ships to direct itself in
sure anchorage and to inform for kakokajrj'a the governors of ships,

Hello Angel,
I am in the process of setting up a small WRF system at home for doing
reanalysis on high resolution. I use the Workstation WRF version you also
mention on your website, however I am interested to know if you know of any
sources for historic observational data (eg SYNOP, METAR) and reanalysis
first-guess... I was thinking of ERA-15 and ERA-40.

This severe thunderstorm I was talking about last night and I posted
pics about, it caused damage. Houses have been damaged throughout the
country, hail has dent the cars and also, heavy winds associated with
it hit areas. At least 2 counties have been affected. No injuries and
deaths as of right now.
Media response was slow to the event. First news reports came about
7-9 hours after the storms hit.

We may get the odd waterspout off Isle of Man but nothing like a

Subject: [eurochase] Timelapse animation of an approaching shelf with
lightning
Hi everyone,
Finally got a page online with the nice shelfcloud we chased on June 19th. A
storm system (forming MCS) was approaching in Northern France and moving
towards Flanders. We got onto the top parking lot of Cassel, a small village
on the southern flank of a 156m high hill in a rather flat landscape with
open view towards the south (about 250 miles north of Paris).
The shelf approached us at dusk, so it was possible to capture the clouds
but shutter speeds were also long enough to capture some of the lightning.
As it often happens here with MCS systems, lightning in front is not so
active, and even rain is falling ahead of the shelf, but apart from a few
drops on the lens, it wasn't that much of an issue this time.
The page contains photo's I took with the Canon 5D, and a few from the
timelapse series I made with the 10D. Down the page are the 2 animations of
the approaching shelf, taken with the 10D and mounted as an SWF video.
