Peter,
There is no such thing as EXP 5.1. Do you mean EXP 5.0? If you want to order
the upgrade from an earlier version to EXP 5.0, the best way to do so is as
follows:
1) Go to www.expswp.com
2) Click on Ordering.
3) Note the ISBN number for the upgrade.
4) Call the 800 number listed on that web page and order the ISBN number.
I hope this helps.

I fully agree with the previous comments about the limited visibility which
EXP suffers from.
It is an excellent tool which is clearly superior to Scientifc WORD. I'm
sure there were
many users of EXP 2.0 or other earlier versions who switched to other word
processors
because they imagined EXP was a thing of the past - I know a couple in my
department.
That said, once you have it, the manual is very useful and I have so far had
no problems
converting from the old EXP 2.0 to EXP 5.0.

Linda,
Are you speaking for the company that owns and handles EXP?
I do not see a future for EXP if marketing (or no-marketing) continues
like this. That would be a great pity for such an outstanding product.
There is a market for this software: scientifc word is doing reasonally
well. A lot of people do not want to learn latex if they do not have
to. A few years ago, math type (add-on equation editor) did a 50%
discount sell in the yearly joint statistical meetings (8-9,000
participants) and it was selling better than any statistical softwares.
I think a two tie price system is essencial for EXP's market share and
visabilty: There needs to be a student version for $129.

Linda,
Perhaps I must apologise for not making myself clear.
I want to BUY an upgrade of my old 4.0
Then I can use the web to upgrade the upgrade.
But in Australia no-one is interested; and apparently no-one in USA
will accept an order from Australia.
Is this TERRIBLE marketing, or am I imagining something?

I am looking for a scientific word processor and have tried Scientific
Word and Exp. There is no doubt in my mind that Exp is superior in ease
of use and in being truly What-you-see-is-what-you-get. But the EXP's
marketing is so bad. I searched around in the web and EXP's exposure is
1/10 that of Scientific word. I would love to buy EXP but I am worried
about buying an orphaned product.
I would like to hear your opinion. Thanks.

To date this problem seems to be related to the use of TrueType fonts rather
than Outline fonts. The latter are compatible with Adobe 3.0. My version
Acrobat 4.0 works fine with the brackets on matrices in EXP using the Type 42
True Type fonts. However, version 5.0 of Adobe Acrobat does not include the
brackets unless I use the outline fonts (Type 3 font) rather than the TrueType
font. This seems to be the one consistent change for this problem. Any
feedback would be appreciated. Bill

I have a new problem with Acrobat 5 and wonder if anyone has found a solution
or the problem yet. I had some equations with brackets surrounding a matrix.
I printed it from EXP to Adobe Acrobat in both Adobe Acrobat 4 and 5 (on
different machines - one I have not converted to 5.0). I checked the setup of
both distiller and the print driver in comparing the two machines (one is a
notebook). They were as close as I could tell. The version 4.0 print worked
fine. The version 5.0 failed to print the brackets, though the rest of the
matrices were there. Anyone run on to this yet and have a solution? I will
not make the final change on my last machine until I know it works correctly.

Maybe I better quit while I am ahead! I did finally find the n-up pages per
sheet. They had totally moved it on the printer sheet, but it was there. You
can do the following combinations: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16 pages per printed
sheet. This n-up feature is now on the "Graphic" property sheet of the print
driver. Bill

> for EXP users wanting to save PDF files?
For those interested in Adobe Acrobat for possible use with EXP (otherwise just
trash this):
I don't like to keep sending things to the list, but after looking at Adobe
Acrobat 5.0 I felt that potential users (and there are several EXP users that
do slides and such this way) should be aware of, unless I missed something big-
time. I am mainly concerned about 2 items that are no longer part of the
product that I used quite a bit. These are as follows:
1. The printer driver in 4.0 provided a layout feature that allows you to
print 1, 2, 3, 6, or 9 pages per sheet. This is similar to the notes feature
in PowerPoint, but I have looked thru Adobe 5.0 and can't find such anywhere.
In addition, if you install 5.0, the 4.0 PS driver that provided this feature
is overwritten. I have not tried a reinstall of the old print driver yet, but
be aware of this overwrite. It does not appear to be something that you can
get around, though there is an option under distiller to not install the print
driver. This should allow you to use the driver from 4.0, though the watch
folder may need to be changed.
2. In 4.0 (and 3.0) a reduced version of Adobe Capture was included as part of
the package. Now they have set it up so you can go on line to covert a limited
number of documents after you sign up (I guess they keep a count). The other
option is to order the regular Capture product which is their OCR package.
Thus there are at least 2 features from 4.0 that have been removed or cut-back.
For those of us that make slides in EXP and print to PDF for viewing, the loss
of the multi-page layout is a big setback and the print driver for 4.0 should
probably be maintained.
I am still looking at the font embedding, and as I indicated earlier I am not
sure that it is fully functional since some of the fonts do not show embedded,
even though I tell it to embed all. If the fonts are not properly embedded,
this is a major setback for EXP users also, since all of our math symbols need
to be embedded.
There is a feature for sending the PDF files to graphics or RTF output.
However, as one might expect, the RTF feature would be a problem if you don't
have the font used as part of your windows collection.
For those wondering about upgrading to Acrobat 5.0, I would suggest waiting for
now and see what the future may bring. If you have Acrobat 4.0, I don't think
you will find that much in Acrobat 5.0 to make you feel it is worth the extra
cost for an upgrade.
I am interested in hearing from others offline about their experiences,
particularly if they have found something to correct my comments. For those
that are not interested in Acrobat, I hope you stopped reading after the first
line. Bill

An update:
I got Adobe 5 today and it installed with distiller just fine. I turned off
the installation of the Writer since I never use it. I made some minor
adjustments to the print driver that was installed and distiller to set the
graphics resolution to 300dpi, my preference. One thing that I was a bit
annoyed about was that it overwrote my ADOBE 4.2 print distiller driver that
allowed for multiple pages up per sheet, sort of like the multiple page layout
one gets with PowerPoint for notes. I may inquire with Adobe on this since I
used it to make handouts of presentations.
It appears that other features like the Capture (Adobe's OCR) are part of some
document processing and you might want to keep some of the features that are
installed until you (or someone else) figures out what they are. I use Adobe
regularly, but they have changed some names and rearranged things - causing me
to not install some things the first time around (I still have a quirk about
disk space use). The only other thing I am not sure about is the embedding of
fonts. I have it set up by the book, but it is not clear that all of the
BCC... fonts are getting embedded correctly. This was one of the problems with
earlier versions of Adobe, particularly Writer. Bill

All,
Just to clarify, I never "threatened" to stop supporting EXP. It was
Brooks/Cole who decided to stop funding my development. I had to get another
job. I continue to support EXP in my spare time.

I have not used Scientific Word, but am a long time EXP user. When Simon
Smith (the author of EXP) threatened to stop supporting EXP a year or two
ago, there was an outcry from the EXP-using community, and the email blitz
included some realy scathing comparisons with Scientific Word. Apparently,
it doesn't compare to EXP.
You might be able to find those emails, although it was before Yahoo got the
bulletin board.
In any event, EXP is a great piece of software, and I would use no other.

Hi. I'm a long time Scientific Word User. But since I've hit a bad
laptop and it used up three installations of Scientific Word 3.5 I
have to wait and see if they will give me any more. I'm not really
keen on having to pay again to use a product just because the machine
I was using it on developed hard drive problems.
So is anyone here able to briefly compare EXP to Scientific Word?
Thanks

If you install the Adobe4 printer driver that comes on the Adobe CD, then it
will set up to create the PS file and then start Distiller automatically.
Thus, only 1 step if involved. If properly installed, there is an Adobe
program listed in the shut-down list found with cntl-alt-del. This was a
change from Adobe 3.0 which installed Distiller Assistant to do the same
thing. The distiller assistant wrote the PS file to distasst.ps, typically in
the root of C:, and then Distiller would pickup the file as part of the
watched directories and startup.
I don't remember all of the installation steps for Adobe4 (been almost 2 yrs
since I installed), but it took care of the automatic feature. I looked for
distiller assistant with 4.0 at first, but never found it. It was another
process they created to do the same job under version 4.0. If someone has
particular questions, send them to me directly and I will try to check. I am
planning on upgrading to 5.0 shortly, or am going to have to reinstall my 4.0
which got messed up with an OS upgrade. Bill

Bill is absolutely right about using the Acrobat 4.0 Distiller. I'll install
5.0 this weekend and see if there are any problems.

This is the method I use, also. To convert an EXP file to pdf, I have
Distiller set up as a printer to produce a .prn file from EXP, then distill
it to a .pdf file. I have found that the "screen optimized" job option in
Distiller works best.
But it takes these two steps (printing from EXP, Distilling the .prn file to

No surprises at all, as far as I can tell. The EXP documents export
beautifully, although you have to be sure and download the updated Adobe
fonts from the EXP website. I have been converting them for use with my
internet class and they work fine. The file sizes are a little larger, but
so far my students have not reported any problems, and the documents print
out nicely. I have noticed that once you select the PDF writer from the
Printer Setup menu, you sometimes need to do another print preview to make
sure the page breaks are maintained. Other than that, EXP files convert
easily.

I'm a long time EXP user (since the first DOS version). I have used SW,
testing it for Brooks-Cole years ago. I absolutely prefer EXP. You can
select style sheets if you want, but you can "free-format" also. The screen
is WYSIWYG. If you prefer keyboarding to mousing, virtually every EXP
command is available with keyboard strokes. Once learned, they are very
fast. Macros are easy to create and use. A disadvantage of EXP is that it
can't be converted to HTML. It is a LATEX converter, but I don't know much
about how the LATEX output is - I do know that Scientific Notebook can't
read it. Version 5.02 (update available to 5.0 users via the author's web
site) converts well into Adobe Acrobat - but that is not terribly necessary,
I think, because folks who will read EXP documents can download the EXP
Viewer, an almost full version of EXP. The viewer does not save documents,
and shows a limited number of graphic formats. One of the other responders
told from where the viewer can be downloaded. That address is also on my web
site www.nv.cc.va.us/home/jwilkin as are the many EXP files I create for my
students.

This information about exp is available on the web site. I think you'll find it
very easy to use:
About EXP 5.0
EXP
----------
® is a complete, stand-alone scientific word processor for
Microsoft Windows?. EXP provides all the features that are standard
on most business-oriented word processors in addition to a full range
of features that enable you to enter mathematical expressions
quickly and easily. EXP displays a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get
(WYSIWYG) view of your text while you are editing it.
EXP lets you mix mathematical expressions freely with text and
graphics. Although EXP emphasizes writing mathematics, there is
nothing about EXP that limits it to mathematics. EXP is designed to
handle the word-processing needs of any of the sciences. For
example, EXP includes superscripting and subscripting commands for
handling the special requirements of typesetting chemical and
atomic formulas such as
EXP 5.0 Features and Benefits
EXP provides a complete, integrated work environment for writing,
editing, and printing scientific documents. With EXP 5.0, you can:
Mix mathematics freely with text and graphics without switching
in and out of an equation editor.
Convert EXP documents to LaTeX for submission to journals and to
work with other LaTeX users.
Typeset chemical formulas and reactions.
Use more than 500 special symbols in your documents.
Enter any symbol quickly by typing its name rather than by
searching through miles of symbol palettes.
See all text, mathematics, graphics, and formatting displayed on
the screen as they will print.
Create keyboard macros on-the-fly and name macros with multi-key
sequences.
Import PostScript graphics and have them displayed on the screen
and printed on non-PostScript printers.
Use "text libraries" to reduce repetitive typing and to insert
frequently used text and mathematics.
Use the table editor to create complex tables quickly and easily.
Use automatic numbering to number items in your document.
Use the Find and Replace commands on math and formatting as well
as on text.
Use styles to format documents quickly and in a consistent
manner.
Use document templates to customize the content and formatting of
new documents.
Open and print documents directly from the Windows desktop
without having to start EXP first.
And much more!
If you need to include mathematics or other scientific notation in
your documents, EXP is the tool of choice.

This is very surprising. The only things I've seen about EXP such as the
Brooks/Cole feature list at
http://e-catalog.thomsonlearning.com/112/
are a very small subset of the features of very old versions of Scientific
Word. It's not much of a comparison.
I can't find very much more on EXP. If it's much better than Scientific Word
that would be great.

I haven't found anything like that in my web searches so far.
Is there a trial version?

Dear EXP Users,
The release notes for EXP 5.0.2 failed to mention that EXP 5.0.2 supports
the euro symbol. The EXP name for the euro symbol is "euro". If you are
using Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 and your system has not been updated for
euro support, the euro symbol will not display correctly. For complete
information about Microsoft Windows support for the euro symbol, please see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/euro.asp
Regards,
Simon Smith
Dear EXP Users,
This is very embarrassing. There was a serious problem with EXP 5.0.2 as it
was posted on January 28. I have now corrected the problem and posted new
download files on the EXP web site. If you downloaded either the EXP 5.0.2
Update or the EXP 5.0.2 Viewer prior to receiving this message, please
download the files again. I apologize for this nuisance.
Just to let you know the problem wasn't a programming error in EXP... the
trouble turned out to be a certain compiler optimization option that
Microsoft has apparently changed in the latest version of their C++
compiler. This option used to work fine, but now it seems to be causing
parts of EXP trouble.
Also, some people have reported having a problem going to www.expswp.com. If
it does not work for you, it could be because your organization is using
Internet software that is blocking URL forwarding. In that event, please try
going directly to the EXP site at:
http://home.att.net/~expswp

Simon Smith
Dear EXP Users,
The EXP 5.0.2 Update is now available for download from www.expswp.com. I
would appreciate it if you would pass this message on to other EXP users you
know.
