You can use USB keyboards and get a USB multiplexer to hook in as many
as you want.

There are dual monitor video cards on the market (Matrox makes one, the
Nvidea Quatro4 200 also works), but with Windows you'll still only have
one keyboard and mouse focus on the screen.

Windows

[...]

I'm buying a new computer and I want to configure it for pair
programming.

Presently my motherboard only has one receptical for a single
keyboard. What hardware do I need to buy for my new computer to
accommodate multiple keyboards for pair programming on windows? Can
we each have our own mouse too?

What about dual monitors. What do I need need for each programmer to
have his own monitor. Does that require an additional video card? It
seems like it should not, I just want the same video signal sent to
two monitors.

If you're using PS/2 keyboards you can use the Y-key adapter:

http://kinesis-ergo.com/other_adap.htm

It allows you to use both keyboards at once. I have one at work because
I use the kinesis ergo contoured keyboard and nobody else can. It works
pretty well except for some skittishness at startup -- sometimes it
doesn't initialize one of the keyboards -- but it's easy to work
around. But since it's $60, if you don't have someone using a special
keyboard you're probably better off just getting two USB keyboards...

Now I just need to get people to pair...

May I confirm here?

Let's assume I get the USB keyboards and multiplexer
or the Y connector for PS/2 keyboards and 2 PS/2
keyboards (http://kinesis-ergo.com/other_adap.htm).

MS Windows (or Linux) is going to think all the
keystrokes are coming from a single keyboard and not
multiple keyboards? MSWindows is also going to think
there is a single mouse and not muliple mice?

Furthermore, I need no special software for this?

   Thanks,
      Siegfried

The purpose of the PS/2-Y adapter is to trick the computer into
thinking a single keyboard is connected when two actually are. It
certainly works that way under Win32 -- no additional software
required. I assume it works the same under linux but I've not tested
this directly.

Using Fedora Core 2 test 3 I can connect as many USB mice/keyboards
and they all work in tandem. Not sure if older distributions work in
this way, but they may..

Hi Rob,

I am working through your online book and I am quite impressed :-))

In chapter 10 under "Footnotes", the footnote "5." is just a cyclic
link to the book itself instead of a link to "refactoring functions
for Emacs".

Since I am using Emacs I would be very interested in seeing those
mentioned "refactoring functions".

Cheers,

Thanks. BTW, I didn't ignore your post for a PDF. It's still in my

to PDF.

I uploaded it: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/extremeperl/files/

We'll add it to the Bivio-bOP release, too. Be warned that all
features in b-perl.el might not work with every version of cperl.

BTW, chapter 10 is almost done. It's got to get done, because I'm
giving a workshop on continuous design in a few weeks. :-)

This is a timely post. I was on the verge of sending out the very same
query. I have two questions:

1. Which versions of cperl has b-perl.el been tested against?

2. How do I reference b-perl.el in my .emacs file?

Thanks,

Greg

4.19 is what we're using. I think the compatibility problems are
related to some of the indenting "fixes" we put in. The refactoring
functions probably will work with any version as they are not related
to any cperl specifics except the cperl-mode-map.

(require 'b-perl)

BTW, I mentioned the wrong chapter number in my last message (not even
realizing the subject was about Chapter 10 :-). It's the Continuous
Design chapter, not Chapter 10 Coding Style, which will be out soon.

Where are the archives of this mailing list where I

thank you. I didn't think that my post was ignored. I just wanted to
state that there is some demand for a PDF version too or at least a
"one file" HTML version. But I did not expect that such a beast would
show up a few of days later.

hooked up to a single motherboard!

I'm having trouble with with the two keyboards. I have two PS/2
keyboards with USB adapters and I plug them into a little USB hub and
Windows 2003 issues a little error message. Only one keyboard works.

Do I really need to buy two new USB keyboards? Are not they the same

We just released a PDF (letter and A4) version of Extreme Programming
in Perl. The PDF was generated by converting the DocBook XML to
LaTeX. There's a TOC and keyword index, all nicely linked. The
translator was added to Bivio::XML::DocBook, which we'll put online
with the next bOP release. Thanks to Justin Schell for struggling
through LaTeX for the first time.

The Continuous Design chapter (12) is now available. There are also a
few corrections based on your feedback (thanks!).

If you happen to like comparing Java and Perl, you can download my
talk on continuous design which is based on chapters 11 and 12 with
examples written in Java:

http://www.bivio.biz/f/continuous-design.pdf

The Perl and Java code are quite different, and we didn't include the
last refactoring (adding a single "get" method for all fields) in the
Java version.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

During development, I often want to quickly see if a table just
successfully inserted a new record.

In MySQL, a field can be used this way. Are there any drawbacks to
using such a field? Of course inserts will be a bit slower. But it is
certainly useful in a dev environment.

The document says it works for 4.1.x or above.
Create a table with timestamp column with default as
current_timestamp so you can avoid the INSERT load.
CREATE TABLE tmp (

     ts2 TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
                   ON UPDATE CURRENT_TIMESTAMP);

Hello Extreme Perlers,

We've been having some discussion at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bivio-bOP/

It's centered around bOP, but it's Extreme Perl oriented, and most
importantly to me, there's a lot of code.

   MINI-LANGUAGES SUCK.

it might be good to raise some points/counterpoints here.
