(For background to this see Optional Scope Contract in this groupıs files. )
I read Kentıs paper that presented Optional Scope Contracts and after
discussing the ideas with some friends, I have some questions.
1. Has anyone managed to write and use such a contract? There is an
implication in the document that Kent has succeeded in this (page 4, last
paragraph before Recording Requirementsı).
2. Has anyone tried and failed to use one, if so what went wrong? What did
the customer object to?
3. What are business people most likely to object to? (this may vary by
continent but there it is)
On point 3 I feel the objections may come not from the managers we may work
with, but from the legal or supplier chain managers who may not trust a
supplier when they cannot see what they are signing for (quality?
requirements? product definition of some kind?).
Perhaps a change of culture is required to enable such contracts to become
the norm for software development?
