This problem is known to me - just forgot to mention it in the
announcement:
OS X 10.7 has a severe problem - probably not the only one but this
one hits FDRTools: one of the OS X runtime libraries causes programs
using OpenMP (a parallelization technique) to suddenly crash.
Unfortunately I can't simply solve this problem by myself. I can
only hope that Apple fixes this bug with 10.7.2. If not I will have
to struggle to find a solution...
10.6 does not have this problem hence my recommendation is to stay
with 10.6.
Downloaded the Windows version installer file and first tried to install on my
Windows 7 box (64 bit). Everything appeared to install correctly (filed
installed in the Programs (x86)directory), but no joy even when clicking
directly on the fdrtools.exe file in the installation directory. Tried checking
compatability -- again no joy. So tried to install on my older Win-XP SP3 box
and the same thing happened. Thoughts? Advice?

Hi Andreas: The behavior I see is as I described. After installation, when I
double-click on the FDRTools icon on the desktop nothing happens for either a
Win7 HomePro 64-bit or WinXP sp3 installation. The same for double-clicking on
the fdrtools.exe file in the installation directory. Can you check to see if
the download installation file on your end is OK? Thanks.

You are right. I have identified the problem: when building the
executables Debug and Release coomponents were mixed together.
That's bad but unfortunately I didn't recognize it. I'm sorry. Will
build Beta2 asap.
This update is free of charge for registered users.
Please note that this is a beta release. It works fairly stable
already. However, you might still encounter problems. So please test
this version intensively and report possible malfunctions as a reply
to this message.
Changes Beta1:
New or changed functionality:
Tone Mapping: Compressor: "History" resp. "Undo/Redo"
functionality added.
Tone Mapping: Compressor: "Save/Load module state" feature
added, also known as "Save/Load settings".
GUI: improve responsiveness of scrolling in Preview mode.
GUI: the Preview can now be zoomed via the mousewheel.
GUI: make selection in the "small" Navigator within Preview
moveable by dragging via left mouse button.
GUI: hide (evtl. visible) Preview when closing a project.
Projects: derive project name and output file name from input
images.
Preferences: option to configure the program language added.
Preferences: add "output color space" parameter to "Raw
Conversion" tab.
System: add entry to the Windows registry so that FDRTools
executable can be found from other applications.
External software: "dcraw" updated to v9.10 and "ExifTool"
updated to v8.65.
Bugs fixed:
HDR Creation: Separation: strange colors may occur in regions
with moving objects (multithreading related).
HDR Creation: Separation: color shifts can occur when
switching from Exif to Auto and back to Exif.
HDR Creation: Separation: choosing all color channels as
separators causes grain in regions with strong colors.
HDR Creation: Separation: pressing the 'Defaults' button does
not switch off separation mask and does not deselect layers.
HDR Creation: Separation: with active Separation module the
program could crash during image saving.
HDR Creation: Separation: active separation mask caused crash
when switching between tonemapping modules.
Projects: thumbnails from .dng's were not recognized.
Projects: project settings are lost if the "Save" dialog is
active while the project settings are being saved.
Tone Mapping: Compressor: Postprocessing curve: changing
dynamic range and collapsing the curve caused problems.

is not always redrawn if the tooltip of the "Compressor" slider
is being displayed.

I was pleased to get your email about the updated compressor plug-in for PS. I
just downloaded the 3.0.3 compressor plug-in and installed it in the filters
folder of PS CS5 64-bit, Windows 7 OS. I cannot seems to find where to access
the plug-in in PS. Either I did not install it right or cannot find the drop
down where the FDRTools plug in link is listed? I cannot find any instructions
online to answer either question. Can someone please let me know what I am
doing wrong or not doing and point me in the right direction? I have been
waiting for this plug in and would really like to use and see the results!
Robert
the latest plug-in version 3.0.3 appeared in May. The "problem" with
the plug-in is that it is a 32 bit version, only usable with
Photoshop 32 bit. Photoshop 64 bit does not recognize 32 bit
plug-ins. See this post for further infos:
Hello Andreas, Thank you for your reply. I would really appreciate it if you would please let me know if the 64-bit update ever becomes reality. Robert

Hello Roger,
I think I have found a workaround for the Lion OpenMP bug. At least on my
machine I have no crashes any more. Could you please test Beta4 on your machine?
Thank you.

Does anyone know how to contact FDR? There is no e-mail address on their website
(or I missed it). I purchased and registered version 2.3 and when downloaded
2.5.0 it deleted the 2.3 version.
When I purchased 2.3 I received a user name and password to a link to download
the unlocked software. When I start up 2.5 it wants the location of the
registration number bin file. I don't have one and don't think I ever did. How
do I get 2.5.0 unlocked??
Thanks for any help or info.

Hi Martin,
the official contact details are shown here:
http://fdrtools.com/about.php. But you may use any common username
(local-part) like support or contact.

No, downloading and installing FDRTools does not delete other
versions. On Windows different FDRTools versions are installed, used
and uninstalled independently. On OS X downloading new versions and
unpacking the .dmg does not delete prior versions. After that you
may copy the resulting FDRTools folder to any place in your file
system. This step can of course overwrite an existing FDRTools
folder but OS X explicitly requests your approval before doing so.

Yes, in 2009 the registration system changed from "password
protected download directory" to "license key". If you purchased
FDRTools before the change date you need to get a license key to be
able to use new versions. This does not happen automatically. To get
your personal license key contact us per email. You just did that so
you will get your key asap.
Note: Creating the license keys requires manual action on our side.
Creating all keys in one go was not manageable at the date of
change. In order to stretch the workload I decided to wait for user
requests. This is not very convenient for users I know. I'm sorry
for that. However, meanwhile I think most "senior" users have their
license key.
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I look forward to getting the new license key. FDR has been extremely helpful tool in achieving the look I want in my prints.
Best,
Martin Wesley

FDRTools Advanced is now also available as
64 bit version. It utilizes all the system memory and hence
can process much larger images than was possible with the
previous 32 bit versions.
Note that version 2.6.0 will not introduce new
functionality.

Hi, I have tried to add FDRTools into lightroom3 via the L/R plug-in manager but
I get an error message. I am assuming it can be integrated into L/R like
Photomatix, SNS-HDR etc etc
Many Thanks
Russ
Hi, I don't believe there is an FDRTools "plug-in" for Lightroom in the same way that there is for Photomatix.
You need to "file->open" the Raw files from the FDR tools menus for the files to be imported. Equally you need to "file->save" in FDRTools for the file to be saved somewhere (and then use "Library->import" in Lightroom to load the LR catalogue).
There is, however, a plug-in for Photoshop which allows you to call the FDRtools plug-in directly from Photoshop and return the results to Photoshop, however this seems still to only operate when photoshop is running in 32bit mode.
Perhaps in a future release?

I can start a new project and select 3 dng images. When I click on Prepare,
each image is loaded and saved, but when the program trys to load the saved
images to begin the alignment process, I get a C++ Runtime Library runtime
error... This applicaton has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an
unusual way...
If I select the same images, but in jpg format there is no problem.
