Hi Kevin,
    Wonderful stuff, had some problem though with k2. Specifically
enabling the k2 sidebar manager causes the plugin to fail with

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_register_sidebar_widget()
in /.../wp-content/plugins/fireeagle_4_wp/fireeagle_4_wp.php on line 20

Disabling the sidebar manager fixes stuff up.

Thanks for the feedback! I have fixed the error you mentioned when using
the K2 theme. I should have an update on the server by tomorrow (dependent on push schedule).

Unfortunately the K2 theme uses a different module registering API then the default
 WP widgets, so my plugin will not blow up now when using the K2 sidebars, but the
widget does not run in the K2 sidebar. You can use the K2 theme, but not their module
stuff with the Fire Eagle plugin. I will look further into seeing what all I have to do to support the
K2 theme, I just want to stay away from the slippery slope of having to maintain X number
of plugins for diff themes. I'll shoot an email to the list when the updated plugin is live and ready
for download.

Cheers!

None that we know of, other than Mologogo.

What flavor of library would you need to integrate with OSMTracker?

Is there any FE updater apps for Windows CE? I've got an old Axim X30 running Windows Mobile 2003 SE. Mologogo crashes on startup due to some .net weirdness, but I've got OSMTracker and TomTom on it so not really wanting to give it up easily.

Maybe one day I'll get FE capabilities integrated into OSMTracker :-)

The Problem
I am trying my first steps with the php walkthrough but it fails:
http://www.dotcomslave.de/fireeagle/test.php

I can't find out what the problem is. When I manually use the created
URL the response seems to be correct.

I can't speak to the problem you're having that well; hopefully Phil will be able to jump in and see what the problem is.

The Question
I aim at writing a module for Zikula and I read the threat with the
Drupal guy. If I understand it correctly the plugin auth now works but
with limited access because fireagle doesn't know who the calling app is.

For Google Maps every webmaster has to generate a key and they are used
to obtaining keys for special modules. So would it be possible to let
them create their own app key at fireeagle if they want the full
service, so they don't all use my key?

Fire Eagle knows which "app" is accessing it, just not the specific instance.  The only functionality that's being dropped as a result of plugin auth is "recent" and "within", which is mainly useful within a social context.  If you want to re-enable access to those API methods, you can provide instructions so that maintainers of individual Zikula instances request their own consumer keys by registering an app referring to their installation.

It's up to you whether you include a consumer key and secret corresponding to the plugin or if you require people to register themselves before it can be installed.

Can you point me to this in the docs, as it's an incorrect assertion?
We can't do this, as it would potentially constitute leaking
proprietary data.

When we return a location, it's limited to specific information about
that location (and what it's parented by). We include bounding boxes,
names, and WOE ids, but cell info is not part of what constitutes a
location.

Your best bet is to poke around the ZoneTag API to see if it will get
you closer to what you're trying to accomplish. Otherwise, I'd
suggest getting in touch with Skyhook and/or Navizon to see if they
can help.

> I have hooked up ZoneTag with FireEagle to automatically broadcast my
> location via my mobile. However when I query my location via the API,
> I do not get the Cell ID level data back. In FireEagle itself, my

Our cell coverage is quite limited (as you've discovered); as such,
we're recommending that people resolve cell ids to locations elsewhere
and update Fire Eagle with the resultant location.

We're looking into what Yahoo! can do about improved cell coverage,
but at the moment, it doesn't look like we'll have anything better
than what Skyhook / Navizon offer by the time we launch (and at
present, considerably worse). As such, we've actually floated the
idea of removing "official" support for it (either by striking it from
the docs until we're happy or even by removing support for cell ids
entirely).

I hope this helps.

Hey Samir.

Late, but hopefully still helpful.

(Someone correct me if my Python is wrong.)  For "import oauth" to work, oauth.py needs to be in the same directory as the script importing it.  If it's in a subdir (or elsewhere in your PYTHONPATH), you'll need to do "from oauth import oauth".

I developed one for the iPhone under the brand SearchQuest.
Unfortunately, it is in review at Apple since July 7 and they did not yet published it in the App Store. I hope it is going to be available this week.

You can send a location update by shaking your phone, perfect when you walk.

I demo my software at FireEagle office last week.

I also added in my app a list of "iPhone optimized" website like metosphere.com for example. If you have developed a FE website designed for the iPhone, let me know I can add it to the list.

fire eagle, you need to tell fire eagle where you are, so go to http://fireeagle.yahoo.net/my/location
Once you have done that, you should see your location on your blog, if these steps do not work, please
let me know!

Cheers!

Hi,

you might want to offer a zip-file without all the .svn-directories, though. ;)

Besides that: awesome!

Dominik,

Hehehehe, yeah, I had been moving the zip around and forgot to remove the .svn stuff (booo!)
I have a new one bundled up that should be posted soon that is clean and has some minor
tweaks.. I'll post to the list when it's up!

Thanks for the feedback!

You can find the new one at http://wordpress.fireeagle.yahoo.net

the bottom
of the page and click on "Release Notes" or "Help"

This version just has a few minor tweaks to fix some issue i have had
feedback on

Bug fixes:

      * Fixed an error if you have moved your WP admin directory to
another location other
        than the default location

New changes:

      * none

Happy Geo!

Sorry it has taken me a few days to get back to you, I've been busy in Fire Eagle Land ;-)

So, I think you have a very early version of the plugin, you should remove the old one
and install the newest one.

You can download the new one at http://wordpress.fireeagle.yahoo.net. There is also
Install and Uninstall instructions on the page if you need them (under Help!).

Give the new version a shot and let me know how it works out for you. If you still have
problems, can you send me the following info (along with any errors you may see)

WordPress Version
Theme in current use
You plugin install location (ie, where your core files are installed if not the default install)

Cheers!

Subject: Location updates with geometry parameter

Do location updates with a geometry parameter work?

I am having 401 OAuth errors. I am using the google code java OAuth
library. Or 400 errors if I remove some characters that cause problems.

Problems seem to occur with quotes (") (and maybe other characters) in
the geojson value, so I was wondering if it is a URL encode issue. The
Java lib does some funny extra changes to encodings:
(http://oauth.googlecode.com/svn/code/java/core/src/main/java/net/oauth/OAuth.ja\
va)

  return URLEncoder.encode(s, ENCODING)
                     // OAuth encodes some characters differently:
                     .replace("+", "%20").replace("*", "%2A")
                     .replace("%7E", "~");

Can someone give an example of what the geometry parameter value can be.
For example, does it need to be a full GeoJSON polygon like:
"geojson":{"type":"Polygon",
	           "coordinates":[[-122.40650177,37.7494697571],
				  [-122.3790893555,37.7494697571],
				  [-122.3790893555,37.7862281799],
				  [-122.40650177,37.7862281799],
				  [-122.40650177,37.7494697571]],
	           "bbox":[[-122.40650177,37.7494697571],
			   [-122.3790893555,37.7862281799]]}

Or can it be some subset, e.g. just above with bbox part?

Thanks for any help

Hey Clive.

The short answer is no.  The docs claim that geometry parameters can be provided, but the sad truth is that they don't work yet, as we haven't decided how to deal with indeterminate locations.

Thanks Seth. Can someone change the documentation to put "Not
implemented" or something for the geometry parameter on location updates?

This feature seems very much needed as many ways of getting a
location, GPS or Cell ID might be provided to us (by a 3rd party) as a
lat/lon + accuracy - so I want to pass this on to FireEagle, probably
as a bounding box for the location.

I assume you are tackling the tensions between location
obfuscation/privacy and indeterminate location. What does one do if a
person sets their location to the US/Mexican border with 5km accuracy.
  You can't return a semantic place name for that (unless you are very
clever), maybe just a GeoJSON bounding box?

Hey Everyone,

Check out the nifty little J2ME Fire Eagle updater app that Simon
wrote. It does exactly what it says: automatically update your Fire
Eagle location from your mobile phone. Nothing less, nothing more.

It's not been rigorously tested so try it out and give us any feedback.

Cheers,
Jeannie
