Hi!

It's been a while since I've heard from any of the
people interested in the Flash group. I went to the
ActionScripting seminar a couple of weeks ago and got
20 or so names of interested people. One of them,
Charlie, is helping to find a meeting place. We hope
to find one in downtown Minneapolis, but are open to
suggestions.

Dan has offered to continue to be the moderator of the
Flash Yahoo group. Will someone volunteer to create a
Flash website? Dan already has the skeleton, but we
need content.

I will send out a copy of this email to all those who
signed up at the seminar.

Questions to ponder (and I hope to make a reply):
What is the focus of this group?
Do we want speakers? How will the website function?
One suggestion is that it be a showplace for members
to display their latest Flash creations.
What kinds of topics do we want to discuss?
What do you want to learn and what can you teach to
others?

Okay! Let's get those replies back in! Please send the
reply to:  flashmn@yahoogroups.com

Thanks!  Joanie

Hello again Flash MN people...

The Actionscipting seminar today was quite interesting.  There was really too much information to go into depth about here, but I will refer you the website the lecturer has put up to share his tutorials and other information, apparently:
Unfortunately the site seems to be broken right now, so I can't refer you to any notes for today.  The cd he gave out which he co-authored looks like it has a lot of very useful information & tutorials, so I imagine the website is likely to be a pretty useful resource.

Some MX highlights from today:

1) You can insert .jpg's and .mp3's in flash. .jpgs insert the same way you insert a .swf file:

loadMovie("picture.jpg", mc_instancename);

2) Any named object in flash can now trigger an event.

3) You no longer have to put button commands on a button.

Instead of putting the following on a button:

on (release) {
    gotoAndPlay(1);
}

You can put the following in a frame:

buttoninstancename.onRelease = function (){
gotoAndPlay(1);
}

4) You can control the timing with the setInterval command that will keep time independently of the movie's frames per second.

5) You can create new movie clips without having to put a movie clip on the stage with the createEmptyMovieClip:

_root.createEmptyMovieClip("NewPlace", 99);
loadMovie ("yourmovieclip.swf", NewPlace);

6) Text boxes no longer have to be made into movie clips to animate them.

7) Flash now handles cookies independently of your browser, with it's own system. Since flash movies do not require a browser to run, these cookies are not limited to the browser. Cookies in flash are called "shared objects" in flash. We should most likely all fear for our privacy.

8) Flash can detect fonts installed on a user's machine & display them.

Thanks to Joan for getting the speaker to mention our fledgling user's group, and for generally spreading our propaganda... let's hope we get a lot of active members from it.

~Steven Stwalley

Hi!

I went to the Flash seminars on Wednesday, saw the
ColderFusion user group flyers and asked Tom if I
could bring a flyer for our group. He said "Sure!"

Today I went to the ActionScript seminar and brought
the flyer. Tom provided a sign up sheet for our group.
The main presenter from Macromedia, Greg, held up a
copy of my flyer and announced the group's existence
at the beginning of the seminar. Both Tom and I put in
a good word for our fledgling group -- and now I have
19 names of interested area Flash users! Wow!

Joanie

P.S. The seminar was good, too.

Hello Flash Users Group folks,

Here's some information on the Macromedia seminars from today, if you're interested.

 The first seminar, "Data-Driven Sites," was really interesting & made developing simple databases in Dreamweaver look surprisingly easy to me. It seems like an interesting thing to explore to me, although experienced database developers may have no use for it.

The second seminar was on "Rich Internet Applications," which is what Macromedia is betting on as the next generation of web development, and they made some pretty convincing arguments for it. "Rich Internet Applications" are what they are calling applications that function inside your browser, but potentially do the same sort of thing as the things you find on the desktop of your computer. They combine the power of databases with the versatility and multimedia capability of flash. They showed many huge advantages to this, such as being able to complete complicated processes, such as e-commerce transactions, on a single page, rather than having to go through many pages (potentially saving the client a lot of time and much frustration). They also have added actionscript in Flash that helps to remedy the problem of the Flash movie moving faster than the database can keep up with, as happened in the previous version.

Here are some links they went to during the session:

Here was a flash movie they played for the introduction... a piece of propaganda for rich internet applications that is itself a rich internet application.

Here's info on the development of that presentation:

Here are the "Trio Motors Website" demos that they executed; The site they showed for a demo was pretty amazing, but as far as I can tell you have to install the demo to see it.

They showed the "Lawn Products Calculator" from here...

Here's a really impressive one page e-commerce solution for a hotel... they claim this solution vastly improved the number of people making reservations online, saved clients from being frustrated and calling to make reservations, and increased their available bandwidth by 85%.

Unfortunately, they left little time at the end to show off the new multimedia functionality of Flash with streaming video and audio, and their demonstration of it was actually less informative than the one yesterday... they didn't show how they built the files this time, which seemed pretty impressively simple when they showed it yesterday.

Hi all,

I went to the second of the Macromedia seminars today. It was really worthwhile, and they really seem to have done a good job integrating their MX products. They were mostly talking about Fireworks MX and Dreamweaver MX this afternoon, which was interesting stuff, and they talked about Flash MX for about the last half hour. More specifically, they talked about their newest product, Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX, which you can read more about here:

They demonstrated it's ability to stream video, audio and text simultaneously inside of Flash without the need for an additional plugin.  This was all built with drag and drop elements inside of Flash MX that are added when you install the server software.  Additionally, they showed a flash movie two users were both interacting in simultaneously, which opens huge possibilities for online gaming, among other things.  They'll be talking about this more tomorrow afternoon in the "Delivering Results with Rich Internet Applications" seminar. The seminar if free, and if you can make it I highly recommend attending.  There is obviously a sales pitch, but there is much to learn as well.

Hi,

You have the weary sound of the man who has bumped
into a wall! Obviously, I didn't get to the seminar
today, but I'll be interested in Steven's report.
Today is probably a general intro.

Don't let a small bureaucratic *&Y*#$*?%!!! blockade
stop your energy. We're going to have a great group!

the 'established' level of the group actually doesn't figure in to the
struggles of getting some exposure there or not. the issue is that
'seminars' is a different department in macromedia than 'user groups' and
my contacts there are are frustrated as i was. sigh.

i'm not going to get to the seminars. however, you can point people to
flashmn.com even though it's in development. that's an easy url to
remember. steven is at the seminar going on right now, we'll see what kind
of feedback he gives....

Hi

No, I haven't got anything to hand out. I've been
going to job interviews. There is hope! I'm not sure
I'll make it to the afternoon seminar today, but will
definitely be there Wed and Thurs.

If we had a more completely established group, we'd
probably get more cooperation from Macromedia. I've
been telling lots of people about the group. How about
you?

Nice job Joanie,

I like the idea of southdale or ridgedale since i'm an hour south-west of mpls...

Also, since i'm a beginner at flash, (but i learn quick) and idea for a first meeting would be cool to do a basic fundamentals walk-through, of planning the project, and getting started, and learning the basics of Flash.  I've gone through all the built in tools, but it would be way better to see somebody who knows what they are doing, explain some fundamentals as the start to build a project.

just my $0.02. :)

We brainstormed ideas about where to meet and are
checking into meeting at a library (Southdale or

We would like a corporate sponsor if possible.

We currently have 17 signed up for the user group but
need 20 for offical Macromedia status.

The structure of meetings:
Monthly, on the 3rd Thursday of the month to avoid
conflicts with CFUG and Director group meetings.
Social time 6-6:30, speaker and business at 6 p.m.

What topics would we like to address at meetings?
Some possibilities included neat little tricks and
shortcuts, animated buttons, cursors that are not a
"hand", importing files from other software, and
possible speakers like Doc Ozone.

Benefits to members?
Learn about animation and Action Script, learn new
stuff with less of a learning curve, an opportunity to
show off your latest work to the group, links from the
group site to your site, connection with Macromedia,
networking, speakers.

That's it for my notes! Thank you, Dan, for getting
this group started. It's something I've wanted for
quite a while. Oh, and remember to sign up for the
Macromedia seminars in Mpls next week. I'll be there!

flash guy, i'm a coder. i'll be a great guy for talking actionscript and
server/flash interaction but a horrible person to discuss animation
with. but that's why we have a group, right?

Hey Dan...
Tuesday should work for me... I may end up being a little late though, since I often don't get off until 6:00. Talk to you soon.

Don't know yet, I haven't planned for next week. Just let me know when it is for sure and I'll try to make it.

Thanks Dan,

Hi Dan and others,

I just joined.

I use Flash with Macromedia Generator to generate gif's on the fly
for the web sites I make at work. Since that is the *only* thing I
use Flash for, I'd really like to expand my Flash abilities to
include animation, etc.

Currently, there is no particular day of the month that would be bad
for me.

Thanks,
Carrie

Hi,

Thanks for the invitation to join the group. I'm already part of CFUG
but on the designer side, not the database side. I am sooooo ready to
learn to use Flash really effectively and to wrap my brain around
ActionScript. I live in the visual right brain world as much as
possible. I'm out of practice with left brain logical stuff like
writing code. I've been looking for a group like this one for
inspiration, feedback, and way-cool stuff being done locally. Bring it
on!

As for nights to meet? Would we meet monthly? I can handle any night
that is NOT Fri, Sat, or Sun. I do a lot of outdoor activities, and
like to get away when I can.

Joanie

P.S. The guitarlady name comes from playing classical style. Not great
at it, but it lights up my soul.

meeting night.  where?

oof - I think I showed up too early. (c:

okay - a little about me: I'm great at planning, and
participating online, but not at actually SHOWING UP
to events. However - as I get more into Flash, that
may change.

Thanks for starting the group.

flash and databases will definitely come up but i want to stress that this
will be a flash user group rather than an 'integrating macromedia products'
user group. so when we start talking animation and special effects please
be patient!  welcome aboard!

the purpose of this list, imho, is to talk a little bit about what we'd
like a group to be and discuss when we'd like to meet. since we're
starting out right now we have more freedom to choose a 'good' night than
after we're established. first and second wednesdays of the month are out
as those are the coldfusion and php user groups. i'd like to propose
monthly and i'd like to propose that we try to establish a meeting time
soon since macromedia will be in town soon for their 'roadshow' in a few
weeks and it would be good to have a presence there...
