run foldmonitor. Sometimes the clients just quit when i get home....
Been watching the process here for a couple of hours and it occurs
when foldmonitor updates the screens and stuff. At that point the
client gets a Q for quit, uploads and exit. Must say that it occurs
ocaisional but not before i used foldmonitor.

of that nice tool foldmonitor to let him know that his statspart of
his site has been down now a couple off days since the maintainence

Greetz,

The newest Distributed Folding run has an interval of 5000 instead of
10000. To correct this in the monitor (latest 5.1.3) do the following:
Options->Edit Preferences
At the bottom you'll see "Interval for current DF protein"
This needs to be set to 5000 for the current run
Den
v5.1.3
- Fixed (Distrib) Fixed Current Structure complete in HTML output to
reflect number of structures total instead of values over 100%
- Added (Distrib) Added preferences item to set the number of
structures for current protein (5000,10000,etc)
Files available in the Files section of the FoldMonitor Yahoo group

It probably was. I didn't RTFM but I finally figured it out.

FoldMonitor does not start the client. It only monitors clients that
are already started.
This should have been displayed on the screen in a message box when
you choose the client executable.

The time calculations are based on the timestamps of the files. It
looks to see when the work was written to the drive and then uses that
as the start time. It then takes amount of time between the start and
NOW and then divides it by the work completed. For frame times, if you
stop it and then restart it, it will say the last frame took X
hours..which is true based on the write of the last frame. It will
slowly drop the times back to normal as the client progresses.

I try to stay away from reading the log files. It's only read on new
protein starts (only as a failover) and when you open it manually. If
I used the timestamps in the log then your machine would spend to much
time reading and parsing log files...and using too much time.
I'd like to change it and do more, but i'm limited with data that I
can easily gather without using too much CPU time and heavy disk
access. Remember there are also people monitoring multiple clients
which sometimes amounts to 10 or more. So multiple any CPU time or
disk access by that amount and you see it would cause problems.

I find the Foldmonitor v5.1 very helpful to check how folding is
going in my PC.
It's been working well so far on Win98SE.
This is my wish for future upgrading.
I usually run winFAH client while PC is powered but not 24 hours a
day.
That means that folding stops and restarts everyday.
In such case, some data of FM's display become inacurate because the
monitor calculates data based on the assumption that the client is
running from start without disruption. If the monitor takes actual
folding time elapsed, we can see more realistic projection from the
monitor.
As a further wish, I would dream of an intelligent FM that can check
the client's running pattern in the past days and estimate completion
time.
Thank you.

v5.1.2
- Fixed (Folding) Current frame progress bar for Folding and i'll
guess Genome
too. Progressbar indicator and % complete were not functioning
properly due
to a typo in the code that was probably introduced in 5.1
- Fixed (Distrib) "Avg Time Per Str" was incorrect once the client
passed the initial block of 5000 structures.
v5.1.1
- Fixed progress being 5000 on client startup with no progress yet.
- Fixed missing > at end of html output.

It is viewable and I use it often. WinXP with IE6. Just the closing tag stands out. Just wanted to make you aware of it and your next release can fix it. No need to make a seperate patch for it. You can wait.

Is the report not viewable in your browser? Works with Netscape 6.2, so I never noticed it. If it's stopping you from using the report I'll release a new version. Otherwise I'll just wait and it'll be in the next one I release.

This update adds support for Distributed Folding. If your using it for
FAH2 or Genome there is no real need to update.
v5.1
- Added support for Distributed Folding clients. You can now use:
foldmonitor.exe --distribfold
or
foldmonitor.pl --distribfold
command line option to run it as FolditMonitor. This is still in
testing.
It will display the progress in the current run of 5000 structures
and also display the client's grand total for the current client
session ( since last restart of client ).
I'll bump this up to 5.1 so people can keep track of version has the
support or not for that project.
NOTE: If your monitoring multiple foldit clients on different
machines it is VERY picky about the clocks being sync'd. You'll see
negative values for times.
I disabled the progessbar and percent complete text for this very
reason.
- Various display formatting changes ( appearance wise ). Client
history window text justifying is one example. Had to make room for
larger numbers.
All the gurus and code masters please look aside, i am just trying to
help people like me ;-)
Any comments or corrections are welcome.

Well, i was one of those guys who requested this, so OK, here is how
i got it to work:
After setting the options for folding2pov in the foldmonitor.config
as mentioned before in another post i had to adjust the following:
When installing perl on my machine i didn't let it add itself to the
path, so i had to manually insert it in front of the call in the sub
run_folding2pov section close to the end of foldmonitor.pl.
Also i didn't let this call give any of the command line options but
set those options directly in the folding2pov.pl instead using DOS
directory names only, since there seems to some kind of misconception
in handling long filenames.
Thus the appropiate line in the foldmonitor.pl looks just like:
system("c:/progra~1/perl/bin/perl $cfg
{folding2pov_dir}/folding2pov.pl");
When all the paths in foldmonitor.config, foldmonitor.pl, winstart.pl
and folding2pov.pl are set correctly suiting your system, you can
just run run the winstart.pl and enjoy optimum monitoring power with
visualization capabilities.
My thanks fly out to Den for giving us what we need.
HTH,
Florian
Hrum hum hum, from now on i officially love your work!
Thanks for adding the folding2pov option again, i will just go and
try to get it working now.

v5.0.11
- New: Option to have FoldMonitor generate HTML reports.
You can turn this on in the preferences menu. There are 2 types of
reports. The normal mode uses your current color theme and makes a
FM looking table for each client. Then there is simple mode with
makes a tables that looks something like the clients window. You can
also set what you want to call the html file and where you would
like it written to. This should be cool for people with webservers. They
can have the html placed somewhere on their site and see what their
clients
are doing..maybe from home or work.
There is also a setting for the interval to create the HTML page so
it's not
being gen'd every update. The default is set to 10 and can be changed in
the preferences menu.
- If FM can't read logfile_*.txt it fails over to FAHLOG.txt. There are
timestamps in the log now. I added code to work around these.
Probably the
only people that will see this are people monitoring clients on
smbmount'd
shares in Linux.
- Fixed date from going off end. I had it set before to kill
2001..it's now
whatever year it is.
- Trying to fix genome percentage from being something outragous at
the end of a
workunit and reset properly.
- Added option of having button to launch folding2pov. I'm currently not
supporting the use of folding2pov. It's there for people that want
to fool
around getting it going. It works, but it's not a simple deal to get
it going
for most people. This was added by request. This also adds
skin item : button_folding2pov_x
skin item : button_folding2pov_y
skin graphic: button-folding2pov.gif
The default with no button-folding2pov.gif is to use the pointer
graphic and
have it appear up by the help menu.
As usual just start FM and 'save config' to get the new stuff added
to your config file.

Hi Den!
Thanks for the quick response.
When i saw this option listed in the foldmonitor.config i thought it
to be a really cool feature, so i personally would instantly vote -
hm, or beg - to get it back again, preferrably as a button and not as
a menu.
Thanks,
Florian

When I went to the newer versions that supported skins I disabled the
povray stuff ( actually removed the button to launch it, the code is
still there ). The protein name used to turn into a button.
It's something I have to add back to the preferences and add a menu
item to launch it or something.

Hi there!
First of all, thanks Den for two really wonderful programs, they are
exactly what i was looking for when i started FAHv2.
There is only one thing i am confused about, i don't know whether it
is a bug, whether it was a feature once, or whether it is just me ;-)
I tried to look it up in google (keywords foldmonitor OR
folding2pov), but didn't find anything useful...
OK, my problem is, at the bottom of the foldmonitor.config it says:
|(...snip...)
|# These are only needed if you have folding2pov and you want to be
able
|# to launch it from foldmonitor - requires folding2pov ver 0.5.3
|# Folding2pov options
|# 1 = on, 0=off on Turns protein name into button to launch
folding2pov
|folding2pov=1
|(...snip...)
|folding2pov_dir="c:/Programme/Folding@Home/folding2pov"
|(...snip...)
|povray_options="+W1024 +H768 +V +D +X +Q9 +A +P"
|(...snip...)
When i start foldmonitor in debug-mode i can see these values are
used:
|cfg{folding2pov}=1
|cfg{folding2pov_dir}=c:/Programme/Folding@Home/folding2pov
|cfg{povray_options}=+W1024 +H768 +V +D +X +Q9 +A +P
But when the program is running i see no way to start folding2pov
from within FoldMonitor, no "button" as it was mentioned in the
foldmonitor.config.
The path to folding2pov is correct, and folding2pov is working just
fine when started directly. What am i doing wrong?
Or did this feature _only_ work with folding2pov ver 0.5.3 and not
later?
Maybe someone can give me a hint, since i don't know perl myself and
the helpfile that came with perl didn't help me...
Keep up the great work,
Greetings,
Florian
I have multiple machines in different networks, but not with some commonly seen
file system.
the only way to reach one network from the other is by ssh (firewalled).
it would be nice to have foldmonitor monitor remote machines via ssh/scp.
is it possible to include that feature into the program?
senks e lot ;)
-- redsoft
Hi Den
I am monitoring eight machines, but the "clients' window only shows
the 1st seven.
History for my more productive machines is cut off at the bottom also.
Could you add a scrollbar so I can see the entire listings?
All complaining aside, I have been using this program for quite a
while and it works well! Thanks!!
Jody Byram, aka
jbyram2(MadOnion.com)
Are all the clocks synced on all the machines?
Also are the time zones set the same ion all the machines?
The 0-100 progress bar is based on the number of frames
completed/stored. The rest is based on timestamps comparing them to
the system clock on the computer the monitor is running on.
