I ran across this too. Put the browse button graphics in the same folder with
the .db? files that FH creates. Then Click the Build button. There should be a
settings button in the Page Layout frame. From there, make sure you browse to the
right file. You may need to just erase the path there and enter just the file
name...Make sure you change them for both the enabled and disabled images.

Really wierd one here . . .

I'm using Forehelp 5.0.2 , building chm files. External style sheet (don't
overwrite option)

I have paragraphs marked as 'bullet1' style. When I build the htm files
and compile, they are being tagged as 'bullet11' - suble difference -
notice the extra '1' there.

'Bullet11' style doesn't exist in my Forehelp style list - or in my style
sheet. I couldn't get it to build properly last night - got to 1 am, so I
cheated and added it to my style sheet - at least the chm looks ok now.

Anyone else come across this before?

Hi Alastair & everyone,

I had this problem too - for me the extra '1' was added to my graphic file names - and although I don't know how I caused it, I think it had something to do with leaving my old "built" files in the build directory and then changing one or more options in the "Advanced" settings for the Build.  (I was working with an inherited project and didn't know how the options had been set up originally.)

To "fix" it I manually edited the HTML (I did it from ForeHelp, don't know if I needed to) on all files to delete the added '1' , and then I deleted all files from the Build directory before building again.

I would love to hear the "why" for this problem if anyone knows....

Regards,
  Emily Goodin

Dear Alistair,

Emily's message stirred a couple of old grey cells into activity.
I recall a time when ForeHelp would (not) overwrite graphics when
it wanted to change a bitmap to transparent. There is a setting
on the Preferences, General tab that says something to that effect.
I have that selected, so any changes overwrite the original file,
but if it isn't selected, FH may be changing the name of the bitmap
file by adding a number on the end.

It may not be that... after all yours is a style that's affected...
but you never know!

Best regards,

David

Thank you to everyone who responded to my earlier request for new list
moderators (there were quite a few excellent volunteers).

In sum, the new ForeHelp list owner is Pete Lees (who also moderates the
MSHelp2 list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MSHelp2 ) and our new
co-moderator is the able (and co-Coloradoan) Dana Cline.

Thank you both for taking this on, and thank you members for making this a
swell couple of years with a truly professional list.

Hi there,

I'm updating a help file using Forehelp 5.0 and for some reason I have a
popup that insists on jumping. Here's the story:

I'm using the Related Topics Wizard and in the Advanced HTML Help Options I
have specified that the hotspot should display as a popup menu. However,
when I compile and test, the hotspot jumps to the other topic rather than
displaying the popup menu.

I've deleted it and redid it and still get the same behavior. I really don't
understand - none of the others in the help file behave this way and this is
not the first time I have used this.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Do all the Relate Topics hotspots do this or just this one? I make no claims of authority here, but I seem to remember this issue (or one similar) coming up sometime in the past and the response being that if there's a single entry in the related topics it just takes you there. But you should check the archives on this to find out for sure.

I'm sure MJ or Dana will pop up with the correct answer if I'm way off base.

Do the other hotspots that work also only have one target?

Have you checked the HTML code or the Object Tag parameters for a hotspot that works and one that doesn't?

I don't use the Related Topics Wizard but I do use the Alink control and it has an extra flag for what to do if there is only one target - either jump straight there or show the popup.  In older versions of FH (sorry, I don't remember which one), I would tick the check box saying "show the popup if only one item" but when it created the code it occasionally missed the flag off.  So I manually edited the Object Tag in the topic and added the flag - it was an extra "1" on one of the parameters, I think.

I haven't had the problem with the 5.01 version I use now (or at least I haven't noticed it yet).

I just checked the HTML Help Workshop help, and it seems that the extra flag (PARAM Name="Flags" Value="1") is only used for Alink and Klink, not Related Topics.

I also checked my 5.01 created Alink objects - and they don't have this flag, even though I always tick the check box.  I have very few single target hotspots, so that's why I haven't noticed.  So I will still need to manually add the flag if I do have a single target topic.  Oh well.

Since the Related Topics command doesn't seem to have the extra flag, perhaps it does only jump directly when there is a single target?

I believe the help is wrong about this. If you use the ActiveX
control wizard in HTML Help Workshop to insert a Related Topics link,
and you choose the option to "Display dialog or menu even if only one
title", then you get a control like this:

<OBJECT id="hhctrl"
   classid="clsid:adb880a6-d8ff-11cf-9377-00aa003b7a11">
     <PARAM name="Command" value="Related Topics, MENU">
     <PARAM name="Button" value="Text:Click Me">
     <PARAM name="Flags" value="1">
     <PARAM name="Item1" value="Topic title;filename.htm">
</OBJECT>

The Flags parameter has the same effect here as in a KLink or ALink
control.

I'd like to say thanks to Ross for moderating this list over the past couple of
years, and also to Pete Lees and Dana Cline for taking on the job. I'm sure
we're in good hands. This is a great list!

And just in case anyone is in the mood for solving mysteries...

This isn't a *problem*, as such - it's more of a puzzle. When I'm creating or
editing topics (in FH 5.0.2), I can apply a bullet style to a paragraph. So
far, so good. If I then select all the text in that paragraph and turn it into
a jump, all of a sudden, the text zooms off to the extreme right-hand side of
the topic and appears to go up a line and the bullet vanishes altogether. But
when I build the topic, it displays just as it should. And if I don't select
the text all the way up to the bullet to make the jump, or if I add in, say, a
space before the jump, it goes back to normal. Weird, no?

So it's not really a problem, because it displays properly when I build - it's
just something affecting the edit topic display. But it's intriguing me, so if
anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, I'll just chalk it up
to aliens putting space dust on my computer and I'll learn to live without
knowing the answer. :-)

FWIW, we experienced the EXACT same problem on a project a year or
two ago. I don't think we ever tracked down the cause of the problem,
but the workaround of adding the "bullet11" style to the style sheet
is probably as simple a solution as any.

In our case, and because there were a number of formatting problems
to deal with, we created a batch script with FAR
(http://helpware.net/FAR/index.html) to perform multiple search-and-
replace operations on the build files. We then recompiled the project
with HTML Help Workshop. This works well enough but is probably not
the preferred solution, as you have to remember to run the script
after every build.

If it's any help, there is a white paper called "Effective Formatting
with ForeHelp Styles" at:

http://www.wwwinnovations.com/resources/ForeHelp/Styles.pdf

But the troubleshooting section at the end doesn't address the
problem you raised.

Ta for that. It is nice to know that I'm not going crazy.

The post-processing option is probably not for me - as I typically produce
a new documention release every week, from multiple development streams,
and I'm working by myself.

Thanks for the great help everyone. Usually Forehelp will take you directly there if there are only two subject in the Related Topics Wizard but for some reason, it was doing it will four topics.

Tried a number of suggestions (thanks very much for all of them) but wasn't able to correct the problem. So when in doubt, delete the topics and create them again. Everything now seems to be OK.

Can you give us more information? Does the compile die on a specific bitmap? Which version of the compiler? I think older versions couldn't do 24-bit color, or had other limitations. What program was used to create the bitmap? Do you get a specific error message during the compile?

How many colours are you using in your graphics? If there are more than
256 colours in each graphic, that may be the source of your problem.

Sorry, I attached a picture but it does not appear in the body of the
mail, the error that happens is "There is not enough memory avaliable
for this task. Quit one or more applications to increase avaliable
memory, and then try again"

My PC configuration:
PIII 900 - 256 Mb RAM - HD 20 Gb - W2000

The graphics are 24 bits Bitmap (BMP). What I'm not undertand is that
I've already had compiled this file yet, and now I changed some
graphics and than it doesn't compile more.

OK, should be plenty of memory. Look at wherever your Temp directory is and make
sure that drive has plenty of free space.

Sounds like the problem lies in the bitmap itself. Is it particularly large
(i.e., several megabytes)? Do you have the latest help compiler (4.03, I think)?
Are there a lot of bitmaps in the help file? So it sounds like the compiler
doesn't actually point you to the offending bitmap? If you've only a few new
ones, you could selectively omit them from the compile and see if that makes a
difference...

24 bit is high . . . but should be ok.

Since your file used to compile, the problem must be one of your graphics.
Remove all the changed graphics from the build. Add one back to the build,
rebuild. If it fails, that is your problem graphic. Repeat this until you
find the problem graphic.

Check that the rtf files being output contain 'bm*' (where * can be c, r,
or l) references for the graphics, instead of having the graphic pasted in
there.

Greetings everyone,

I’m a newly-hired “lone writer” at a small one-year-old company, taking over for a contractor who did the initial creation of the online Help for their one product.  So now, I can basically “set the standard” for the appearance of the Help.  But of course, I want to set *good* standards.  I have a specific ForeHelp question about this, and a more general one.  (FYI, the previous writer used HelpBreeze initially for this project, and she said that it broke when the project expanded beyond a certain size, so she’s been manually editing the individual HTML files to update the help.  Ugh!  I want to use ForeHelp because I used it in a previous job, and this company doesn’t have the $$ right now to go with something really robust like FrameMaker/WebWorks, which I don’t know how to use anyway!)

My specific question is, does ForeHelp do a good job of setting the formatting defaults so that the Help output conforms to what users expect to see, as in font sizes for topic headings, etc?  I’ll be generating Javahelp and HTML Help output.  When I used to ForeHelp before, I remember having to manually override something in the Properties to make the font size large enough (setting it to MS Sans Serif 12 perhaps?) for Javahelp output, but I heard from a former co-worker that the need to do that may have gone away with a newer version of Javahelp.

The general question is, can you recommend a good basic resource for how to set up the most usable Help appearance, including both the basics like font/size as well as other characteristics of online help, like optimum length for a Help topic, how best to use graphics, etc?  I’ve worked in tech writing and usability for a while but I don’t have a lot of experience in online Help writing.

Thanks much,

  Emily

Forehelp makes the help look just like windows help,
in my experience, I can't tell the difference.

FH is a good tool. I just use everything set at default.

Hmmm...good question...depends on what you think is a good font. About all I can say to that is that FH makes it easy to go back and tweak a style if you don't like what the output looks like. I typically make a minor tweak or two to the default FH styles I use, and I also typically create a few new ones from scratch.

Most help authoring books have good background information, but most are also long out of print. Look for books by either Joe Welinske of WinWriters or Cheryl Lockett-Zubak. Books by William Horton are good to, but I don't remember him having anything specific to help systems.

Best thing is to convince your powers that be to send you to the WinWriters conference (www.winwriters.com) in February. Show them the conference agenda...

Do you make it to any of the local STC meetings? We have a fairly active online SIG... www.stcrmc.org
