If you wish to be a volunteer at FOSS.IN/2006, then you have to attend the
volunteer briefing and orientation meet:
November 19th, 5pm
HP Shezan Lavelle
Lavelle Road
Bangalore
As mentioned earlier, there are some special conditions this time.
- Registration:
DON'T come unless you have registered as a delegate at
https://foss.in/2006/cfp/delegates - and bring your delegate code with
you. There is no separate volunteer registration form. If you don;t have
your delegate code with you, you cant be a volunteer.
- Photo:
You will also have to bring a recent, passport sized photograph for the
special volunteer pass (which is different from the delegate pass). Jokers
who bring pictures of Tux (or don't bring pictures at all) can't be
volunteers.
- Delegate Fee:
We ask you to bring your delegate fee of Rs.500 with you. We assure you,
if you don't give us a reason to be upset with you (like disappearing, or
not even showing up, or not doing what you promised to do), you *will*
receive your delegate fee back the day after the event. We are not trying
to make money off volunteers, we are just trying to create an entry
barrier for those insincere people who don't really care about the event.
- Checklist:
[ ] Filled out delegate form (https://foss.in/2006/cfp/delegates)
[ ] Delegate code (8 digit hex code)
[ ] Recent passport sized photo
[ ] Rs.500 (refundable)
- Requirements
Please be clear about this:
- You will have to be available 23/24/25/26 of November
- You must be able to reach the venue independently
- You are preferably from Bangalore or have somewhere to live here
- You are here to help the event succeed, not to save on delegate fees
- You are responsible and dependable
- You know Linux/BSD/FOSS
- You are not a rabid advocate, but a sane representative of FOSS
- You don't expect to be paid for your work (none of us are)
If you don't match all of the above, don't volunteer.
Also, Team FOSS.IN is dominated by the women who actually run the show
(you didn't know that, right?), so we are looking for volunteers on both
sides of the gender line. In legal terms - we are an "equal opportunities
employer".
- Directions
To get to HP Shezan Lavelle, go down Lavelle Road, do NOT turn left to go
to Airlines hotel, but continue down Lavelle road as it curves down past
that fantastic little cottage on the left that I would give my life's
savings to own, and HP Shezan Lavelle appears on your right.
Turn into the small road on the right and park there, and walk up to the
entrance, register, get a tag, and walk through the door up the staircase,
through the door, past the bannister to the conference room at the rear.
Note that people who do not show up for the volunteer brief meeting cannot
be volunteers. At the same time, selection of volunteers will be up to us
- please understand that if 3952 people show up, we still cannot choose
more than 30. Your selection depends primarily on your being at the meet
(repeat, you dont come, you havent volunteered), you participating in the
discussions at the meet and you showing us clearly that you are interested
for the right reasons.
If at the end of the meeting, you'd rather not volunteer, that is
perfectly OK and we appreciate it if you are honest with us.
On the other hand, if you *do* decide to sign up, be aware of the fact
that being a member of Team FOSS.IN is a very serious and responsible
thing.
This means that you have to satisfy the manager you are assigned to.
He/She will allocate tasks to you, and will depend on you to complete them
- and by depend I *mean* depend. Everyone at Team FOSS.IN completely
relies on everyone else in the team without a second thought - that is the
kind of dependability we are looking for in our volunteers as well.
Everyone currently in Team FOSS.IN was a volunteer once, this is your
chance to join a team that has a reputation for creating some of the best
FOSS events in the world - since 1999.
Some of these people will be at the meet to share their experiences with
you about their being members of Team FOSS.IN over the years. Listen to
them carefully - these are the people who put Linux Bangalore and FOSS.IN
on the world map. Not with big talk, but hard work.
This is Team FOSS.IN. We are the best there is, and proud of it.
we look forward to meeting you on the 19th and your joining us.
