IMO it said November 1st week... it should be open sometime this weekend.

Information about it will be posted to all the BLUG lists and to LUGs across
the country... so there is not much chance of you missing it.

Hi folks,

So, what has been decided on the caterers issues ?
Have we decided on anyone ? I think we got two or three ideas on the
same.
One was from Infy, the other from Wipro and the third one ?

Regarding posters, had anyone made any posters for LB/2002 apart from
the only one that was posted ?

Hi Folks,

Going by the talks that were given last year, did we miss out some
really important topics last year ? What more topics need to be covered
, which were not covered last year ?

I can think of Embedded Linux as one. We had a few development talks on
Linux last year. Any other topics which we might have missed ?

I am outstation , will get back in detail little later, the basic idea is to
have setup of 1-2 pcs in venue , having all localisation stuff -
language support, fonts , translations , tools etc installed. So would need 1-2
pcs. I can bring my HDD with everything setup. Will
also need couple volunteers. We could have 10-15 min sessions for a group 5-10
people ( I really dont know how the response
would be or how it can be managed , ). But it would be good if we can do this
will help speed localisation efforts.

Some details needed -

* Size (atleast minimum size) in pixels

* As Prady pointed out earlier, the LB/2002 logo has to be there on each
poster. The logo already has a Tux with the text "LB/2002" and the
event slogan. So, something "extra" is needed to create a poster, like a
quote or ...... any ideas?

I just came across somebody who does low/medium-volume A3/A4 color laser
printing at fairly reasonable rates: Rs 16 each for print runs of more
than 7. The company is called Print Xpress and they have offices in
Koramangala and Residency Road.

Let me know if I should get more information or try to negotiate.

Subject: OpenSource Stalls
achitnis
Send Email Send Email

All:

The exhibition stall details go up tomorrow, but before that, I'd like to
forestall some "high prices are an attack on my freedom" kind of posts:

First of all - note that the exhibition is for *commercial*
products/services. This means it is for businesses and/or organisations
that intend to derive commercial benefit out of exhibiting at the event.

This does *not* mean that we are leaving the OpenSource projects out in
the cold.

Far from it. You know us, we are full of surprises.

We are reserving a series of stalls for the display/demonstration of
OpenSource projects - set to various themes. There will be no charge for
exhibiting in these stalls, ****B-U-T***....

There are going to be extremely strict rules about who can demonstrate a
project there.

The first and foremost rule will be - no commercial products. Period. Not
even "wannabe" commercial products, or "pseudo open" products. If we find
any such item being exhibited based on false pretenses at the time of
application for place in this area, we will unceremoniously kick the
"gentleman" out.

Here is the list of themes that will be exhibited in this area (which is
yet to be named - suggestions are welcome):

Development - e.g. Anjuta

Localisation - e.g. IndLinux

Education - e.g. LAP, The Goa School project

Government - e.g. nothing that I am aware of at this time ;-)

Note that the above examples are just that - examples - to give you an
idea what we are talking about.

Examples of stuff that will *not* be done/shown here is low-cost Linux CDs
(sorry guys, I have already given my reasons for this), books, or
*anything* that is aimed at the exchange of even a single rupee (real or
in spirit).

These four themes will be represented in a series of 4 stalls, which will,
however, not be separated from each other. In fact, the whole area will
work as a single gigantic stall, with all machines networked together, so
that anything can be exhibited anywhere via remote X or shells.

Selected exhibitors will have to bring their own equipment - the BLUG
cannot supply this. Machines *must* have network cards, or you get kicked
out as road-hogs - we expect the entire group exhibiting there to work as
a team, no matter how different their exhibits may be.

And a major factor is that the project should be real. No "in concept
stage", no abstract command-line wonders that don't show any output, but
require someone to explain in detail what exactly happened. This is an
*EXHIBITION* - people come to *SEE*, not imagine.

No companies allowed. Period. You cannot use this area to "brand"
yourself or your company.

The project must be under an OpenSource approved license (GPL, BSD, etc.)

No politics. This is a OpenSource area, featuring Linux. You are free to
refer to your stuff as Free Software and Gnu/Linux if that is how you like
your eggs done, but if we catch anyone standing on a soap box ("don't call
it Linux, call it..."), you get shown the door.

There is no sponsorship for any of this stuff - you are on your own in
terms of equipment or travelling. Sorry about that, but we really have to
draw a line. Maybe next year, with more advance warning, we can look at
sponsoring deserving projects.

The idea behind this area (get me a *name* for $deity's sake!) is to
showcase opensource projects happening in India (did I mention that the
projects have to be Indian?). One person per exhibit (though you can work
in shifts).

How do you get your project into this area?

You read the above again CAREFULLY. Then again, and again, until you are
absolutely sure that you fit in the scheme of things. Then run it past
someone else - just to see if s/he too feels that you fit in.

Then you sit down and write a detailed description of your exhibit, and
send it to lb2-oss-expo@.... Describe the exhibit, what
resources you require (which you will provide yourself - you get power
from us, and fresh air - that's it). Describe the people behind it, and
people who are already using your stuff.

Expect to get denied an "opportunity" to exhibit - we are going to be
ruthless. First come first served is the basic rule, but we are going to
look at suitability to the theme, how much you really have to show, etc.
Finally we will be taking the phase of the moon and the angle of the sun
into account, and for good measure will toss a coin.

4 stalls means that maybe 8 projects can be shown (possibly 10, if the
exhibitors aren't sized like me ;)

So now put on your thinking caps. If you are "worthy" of being in this
area (a name, a name, my last pizza slice for a name!), this is going to
be a unique opportunity for you - your project is going to get visibility
in a really major way, and will be the first projects highlighted this way
at an international-class event. If you are an education or eGovernance
project, be prepared to get *serious* attention from government and
education people. If you are into localisation, you are going to attract
serious attention. If you are into development, you are going to have the
cream of India's IT Capital looking over your shoulder.

Make it a good one - this is the fore-runner of bigger things that the
BLUG has got planned, and the better this works out, the greater are the
chances that the BLUG will be able to expand on this success.

Finally - an apology for any harshness you may perceive in my note above.
I mean no illwill towards anyone, but I also have to make sure that the
message gets across, and that the rules are clear.

Any suggestions towards improvement are welcome - in fact *demanded*.

"locale/hi_IN" is the actual term, but this would do just as well.

Sounds good.

How about calling the free software area FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source
Software)? It's a nice, short, sweet and catchy word.

I am a new member. Can you help? We have a groupware solution that works on
Linux. We would really like to promote this at the exhibition.. is this allowed?
Also i would probably like to do a talk..will promise to keep it short and try
and not bore the audience.
Can you give me more info..ie do you have stalls... what the procedure in
booking one..what promotional material can we put up..blah blah.
Thanks
Priti
