The Sumerian civilization, thought to be the oldest on the planet, has
left us an enduring portrait of their society, philosophy, religion,
and daily life in the countless "records" they left behind. When the
Sumerians wanted to write something down, they used a stylus to press
the wedge-shaped marks that composed their alphabet (called cuneiform)
into a slab of clay. When the clay was fired in a kiln, the result was
a very durable document, hundred of thousands of which have survived
to this day. The Sumerian language is well-understood, and for many
years archaeologists have studied the "myths" told about the Sumerian
"gods" in stories such as the Epic of Gilgamesh. Recently, an Ancient
Middle East archeologist named Zechariah Sitchin revolutionized our
understanding of these Sumerian "myths". Sitchin
realized that eleven of the "gods" described in the Sumerian records
were actually the heavenly bodies of our solar system (the planets
plus the sun and moon).
Sitchin further realized that the Sumerians had a knowledge of the
outer planets that, by all rights, they shouldn't have had. Sitchin
proved this to the world by submitting to NASA detailed descriptions
of the outer planets (as found in the Sumerian records) BEFORE the
NASA space probes reached these planets. Images sent back by the
probes confirmed that the ancient Sumerians indeed knew what these
planets looked like.

Just as interesting, the Sumerians always described their gods (the
planets) starting with Pluto, then Neptune, Uranus, etc., as if they
were seeing the planets from a heavenly body (or spacecraft) that was
entering our solar system from the outside. The Sumerian records also
talk about a "twelfth" planet, one whose elliptical orbit
brought it close to earth for a brief period every 3,600 years.

Looked at from this new perspective, the Sumerian religious epics
contain a startling story:

The "twelfth" planet, known as Marduk was inhabited by humanoid beings
very much like ourselves, known as Nibiru. A problem with their
atmosphere sent them on a mission throughout the solar system in
search of gold, a metal which they believed could be used to heal
their planet. Using rocket ships to shuttle people and supplies
between their planet and Earth, during those months when Marduk's
elliptical orbit brought it close to Earth, the Nebiru established
colonies in Mesopotamia (now southern Iraq) hundreds of thousands of
years ago. They eventually found rich veins of gold in southern
Africa, and established mines exploited
by the worker element of their society, called the Annunaki.


Eventually, the Annunaki tired of this unpleasant work, revolted, and
forced the Nebiru leaders to find another source of labor. Their
solution, related in great detail in the Sumerian records, was to
create a slave race by splicing their genes with the genes of the most
advanced primate on the planet at that time (approximately 200,000
years ago). Thus was born the human race (Homo sapiens).

Recently scientific discoveries (the uncovering of neolithic gold
mines in southern Africa, the tracing of all human DNA back to a
single source, called "Eve" by the genecists), have tended to confirm
Sitchin's interpretation of the Sumerian records. Why science has
never found "the missing link" (the fossil record that would show the
evolutionary path from the early hominids to modern man) is also
explained by Sitchin's interpretation: the "missing link" is not a
fossil, but rather a genetic experiment performed by beings from
another planet in our solar system.

Sumer

Sumer and Sumerian civilization. A notable non-Semitic culture
appeared in S Mesopotamia (Sumer) at least as early as the 5th
millennium B.C. By 3000 B.C. Sumerian city-states, e.g., Erech, Kish,
Lagash, and UR, developed considerable power based on irrigated
agriculture. Pottery and metalwork were made into fine arts, and the
Sumerians probably invented CUNEIFORM writing. The Sumerians were the
rivals of Semitic cities such as AKKAD and ultimately were conquered
by them. A Sumerian revival under the third dynasty of Ur (c.2060
B.C.) lasted until that dynasty fell to ELAM, and the growth of
BABYLONIA ended the
Sumerians as a nation.

An ancient country of southern Mesopotamia in present-day southern
Iraq. Archaeological evidence dates the beginnings of Sumer to the
fifth millennium B.C. By 3000 a flourishing civilization existed,
which gradually exerted power over the surrounding area and culminated
in the Akkadian dynasty founded (c. 2340) by Sargon I. Sumer declined
after 2000 and was later absorbed by Babylonia and Assyria. The
Sumerians are believed to have invented the cuneiform system of
writing.



Literature, 3000 B.C.E.

Gilgamesh in Sumerian cuneiform is the first known written legend
and tells of a great flood in which man was saved by building an ark.



The Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER)
spectrometer instrument on SOHO detected the solar wind by observing
the ultraviolet spectrum (a separation of light into its component
colors, or wavelengths) over a large area of the solar north polar
region. By analyzing light this way, astronomers learn a great deal
about the object emitting the light, such as its temperature, chemical
composition and motion.


Today's physicists enjoy speculating about Theories of Everything, but
they really don't mean everything. They just mean physics and
cosmology. Some 5,000 years ago, the Sumerians constructed a
remarkable Theory of Everything based upon music, a base-60 number
system, and symmetry concepts. These Sumerians didn't have
supercomputers but they were able to incorporate into their theory
much more than physics and cosmology. Below, E.G. McClain provides
some insight into ancient Sumerian thinking:

"In ancient Mesopotania, music, mathematics, art, science,
religion, and poetic fantasy
were fused. Around 3000 B.C., the Sumerians simultaneously
developed cuneiform
writing, in which they recorded their pantheon, and a base-60
number system. Their
gods were assigned numbers that encoded the primary ratios of
music, with the gods'
functions corresponding to their numbers in acoustical theory.
Thus the Sumerians
created an extensive tonal/arithmetical model for the cosmos. In

understanding of mathematical

To understand the role of musical theory in modeling the cosmos, one
must realize that it involves: "the definition of intervals, the
distance between pitches, by ratios of integers or counting numbers."
For the ancient Sumerians music was a tool that helped them describe
the cosmos.

FIVE REASONS WHY UFOs ARE NOT EXTRATERRESTRIAL MACHINES

Regardless of what mainstream science thinks of them, UFO observations
continue to pile up---by the tens of thousands. In fact, like the Crop
Circles events, UFO reports are increasing in number and strangeness.
It doesn't matter that the UFOs and their alleged occupants may not be
physically real. There are tens of thousands of people who think that
they have observed something strange --- even after all hoaxes and
misinterpretations of natural phenomena have been culled out. Most of
those who are willing to accept UFOs as valid phenomenon think they
are real hardware piloted by extraterrestrials.


J. Vallee, a computer scientist and prolific writer on the subject,
demurs, and he gives five reasons why:

"(1) Unexplained close encounters are far more numerous than required
for any physical survey of the earth; (2) The humanoid body structure
of the alleged 'aliens' is not likely to have originated on another
planet and is not biologically adapted to space travel;
(3) The reported behavior in thousands of abduction reports
contradicts the hypothesis of genetic or scientific experimentation on
humans by an advanced race; (4) The extension of the phenomenon
throughout recorded history demonstrates that UFOs are not a
contemporary phenomenon; and (5) The apparent ability of UFOs to
manipulate space and time suggests radically different and richer
alternatives."

If not extraterrestrial hardware, what are the UFOs? Vallee has three
suggestions: (1) they are "earth lights" a la P. Devereux; that is, an
unappreciated terrestrial phenomenon that impresses mental images on
the minds of observers; (2) They are artifacts of a "control system"
operated by a nonhuman intelligence or, perhaps, a Gaia like
manifestation of supernature (of which we are a tiny part) that is
trying to modify our behavior; and (3) They are apparitions caused by
entities manipulating space and time; viz,. time travellers from our

the transpersonal component of the human psyche

In probing the Other we shall always come back with images of
ourselves. In probing ourselves we shall return with images of the
Other. In the phenomenon of being itself no less than in the
phenomenon of the UFO encounters we are merely privileged observers of
a relationship between what is naively called the world and the
transpersonal portion of the human psyche. How this relationship came
to be, and what its limitations are, we cannot know until we gain
access to the transpersonal and a-temporal part of the psyche. Of what
this consists we do not know and no hypothesis can be ruled out. My
hunch is that if we could really comprehend death then we could
understand the UFO. But that neither can be understood unless they
are looked at in light of the question, what is humanness?

I believe that the transpersonal component of the human psyche is not
distinct from matter and that therefore it can literally do anything.
It is not subject to the will of any individual. It has a will and an
understanding that is orders of magnitude more sophisticated than any
one of the individuals who compose it as cells compose a body. It has
a plan, glimpsed by individuals only as vision or religious
hierophany. Nevertheless, the plan is unfolding. There will be many
more UFO sightings, many more close contacts. Our belief systems are
undergoing accelerated evolution via increased input from the other.

Somewhere ahead of us there is a critical barrier where we will at
last have enough data to obtain an integrating insight into the riddle
of humanity's relation to the UFO. I believe that as this happens the
childhood of our species will pass away and when this is done we will
be free to use the staggering understanding that humankind and the UFO
are one.

It is the genius of human technology to master and to serve the
energies of life and death and time and space. The UFO holds out the
possibility of mind become object, a ship that can cross the universe
in the time it takes to think about it. Because that is what the
universe is--a thought. And when thought becomes mobile and
objectified, then humanity--novices in the mastery of thought--will
begin to set out.

Of course we may discover that we are not to set out; the future may
reveal instead that there is something out there calling us home. Then
it will be our technology and the call of the Other that will move
toward meeting. The saucer is an excellent metaphor for this. When
Jung suggested that the saucer was the human soul, he was more correct
than he may have supposed. It is not so far away. That is the other
thing. The last shift of epochs gave us relativity theory and quantum
mechanics. Another epochal shift looms, but whether or not it is the
final epoch is hard to say. Our roles as parts of the process
introduces an uncertainty in our observations that bedevils
prediction.

The Big Picture

Let's put all this hype about change and transformation in
perspective. It's underhyped.

A few billion years ago, the Earth was a big, sterile rock covered
with puddles of chemical soup. Gradually, little drops of oil - random
chemical combinations - formed in these puddles, and some happened to
absorb nutrients from the outside, causing them to grow. They
eventually split into smaller drops of roughly the same composition.
The "cells" that did a better job of attracting chemicals and dividing
survived and split into future generations. These cells evolved an
information processing mechanism, a way of recording for posterity
their recipes for success. The mechanism they evolved - the genetic
code of DNA - is still in use today. With DNA came an evolutionary
advantage: knowledge, as genetic recipes, could accumulate from
generation to generation.
As cells became more sophisticated, they started to communicate,
exchanging chemical messages. Synergistic communities developed that
survived or failed together; if the community was successful, all the
individuals were favored by evolution. This step took another billion
years - bringing life to the stage of multicellular communities, in
which cells are no longer out for themselves: digestive cells depend
on skin and muscle cells, and vice versa. These communities became so
close that they collaborated in writing the whole recipe of the
community on one string of DNA. The most interesting evolution shifted
from the cellular level to the community level.
Next, these communities of cells, these organisms, began to abstract
information and build special structures - neural structures - that
did nothing but process information within the community. After
communities of cells built up a data processing apparatus (the
neuron), they developed structures for sensing, recording, and
understanding information - eyes, ears, and brains. With neurons,
learning happened within the time span of a single organism. An
organism could learn not to eat a fruit that repeatedly made it sick.
Lessons no longer had to be absorbed through evolution,
through the diminished fitness of millions of individuals over many
millennia.
Then these learning individuals started working out the quirks of
communicating with each other. The most sophisticated version is human
language, whereby complex ideas in one brain generate ideas in
another. This lets us function as a community, and in some sense as a
single organism. And so we - humanity - have repeated the process of
connection, communication, and construction of specialized structures
to process our communal information. We're replicating the levels of
chemicals and multicellular organisms, abstracting out our methods of
sensing, recording, and understanding information. Language was only
the first step. Telephony, computers, and CD-ROMs are all specialized
mechanisms we've built to bind us together. Now evolution takes place
in microseconds.
The first steps in the story of evolution took a billion years. The
next step - nervous systems and brains - took a few hundred million
years. The next steps, including the development of language, took
less than a million years. And the most recent steps seem to be taking
only a few decades.
The process is feeding on itself and becoming autocatalytic.
And now we are beginning to depend on computers to help us evolve new
computers that let us produce things of much greater complexity. Yet
we don't quite understand the process - it's getting ahead of us.
We're now using programs to make much faster computers so the process
can run much faster. That's what's so confusing - technologies are
feeding back on themselves; we're taking off. We're at that point
analogous to when single-celled organisms were turning into
multicelled organisms. We are amoebas and we can't figure out what the
hell this thing is that we're
creating.
I cannot believe that we are at the end of this story - we are not
evolution's ultimate product. There's something coming after us, and
Iimagine it is something wonderful. But we may never be able to
comprehend it, any more than a caterpillar can comprehend turning into
a butterfly.

What's the mission? To spread the millennialism at the heart of
information. At the wackofringe of a wacko phenomenon, you find a
mutant equivalence of identity and information, as if the glut of data
and images that continues to rewire the postmodern subject is only
the leading edge of a much greater transformation. Though
characterized in many ways, the new space we are moving toward is the
space of information itself-nonlinear, disembodied, complex,
synthetic. Bashar calls it the "fourth density," wherein one
experiences that"everything is interconnected holographically;
everything is the same one thing manifesting in all the different,
multi-faceted, multi-dimensional ways that it can-simultaneously." In
one of _The Starseed Transmissions's_ most remarkable passages, the
channeled beings say of their gnostic proclamations: "This new
information is not additional data that you will act upon. It is,
rather, the very reality of your new nature. You are not to act upon
my information in the future, you are to be my information
yourselves." These alien angels are telling us something computer
junkies already know: the degree to which we truly live in cyberspace
is the degree to which we identify ourselves with information. Perhaps
the UFO is nothing more than the pied piper of hyperspace. Flying pie
tins, conspiracies, and anal probes are nothing more than lures,
bobbing plastic worms that tantalize us just enough so that we will
look up, and slowly ascend to the edge of the world.
