Hi Mike,

There's no need for this, just free some disk space as a
new partition and add 'GrUB4DOS' into XP's NTLdr booting
menu file called 'Boot.INI'!
Hi Dan, thanks for your interest, it is an old 386 laptop, i have a 40 meg hdd
and one floppy drive; i am happy with getting Odin working on it tbh :-) I would
like to check out the latest cd also, maybe i will wipe my win xp on my desktop
and give it a try ??
Thanks again Mike
I think i need to edit the config.sys & autoexec.bat files on the actual floppy
disc, before i install it- but it doesnt seem a big deal, it works ok still-so i
will try your suggestion first.

I think you can run the text editor by typing "edit" and loading any file you wish to look at or modify, to include cutting out the message that tells you to edit your configuartion and batch files.

I've been working on trying to recompile some Open Source stuff I use to build
with djgpp. Managed to get lcal, pcal and diffh from Sourceforge to build
executables.
Anyone have any favorite applications they'd recommend others try out (at
Sourceforge or elsewhere)? Would be interested in recommendations for Open
Source or just good freeware programs. Thanks.

Are there any good web sites for Open Source applications on FreeDOS? I know
the FreeDOS site and djgpp site have a lot of Open Source libraries and programs
that work on FreeDOS. Was wondering if there were any others anyone would care
to recommend.
Am considering trying to port some of the Open Source applications I use on
other operating systems to FreeDOS and don't want to reinvent the wheel if
someone's already done some of this. Any pointers to other sites or projects
doing this sort of thing, please let me know.
I was also wondering what developers typically use to compile C/C++ on FreeDOS.
I've read the FreeDOS project itself stays strictly with 16 bit DOS mode
programs so it will run on a variety of machines. Am curious if other
developers use 32 bit much. What compilers do developers typically use, Watcom
for 16 bit DOS, Delorie djgpp (32 bit) or something else?
Read something about the HX extender and the possibility of it working with
mingw compiled apps to run them on DOS. Does anyone know more about this? Any
pointers to documentation or a how to on the topic?
Thanks.

Since they do not charge for FreeDOS - with it being free - one
does not have to pay for an operating system; perhaps it is easier
to install or they do not have to pay Microsoft for it? I just think
it is neat that it is an option. For a long while, the only option was
Windows or Mac if one bought an Apple computer. It is nice to
have a choice.

Thanks for the info, BigWarpGuy. I will look for that once I get a FreeDOS system running again. I read somewhere on the web that an alternate GUI, "SEAL," is included in the FreeDOS CD. I've tried both and I think OpenGEM is a much better fit, for several reasons, one of which is that it was more recently updated.

I really like OpenGEM, a lightweight GUI for DOS. I have used it w.
FreeDOS. It does seem to work fine w. FreeDOS. Both are GPL. So I
thought, why not include OpenGEM as an option in the next release of
FreeDOS?
I think it would bring some energy, synergy, to both projects. FreeDOS
would be seen by the mainstream as less of an quaint,
command-line-based anachronism. More people would find out about OpenGEM.
Anyone agree?
