Very well said, and I heartily agree. I feel the same way about Lego.
With my Lego in the 1960s I could build a plane, spaceship, boat,
building...just about anything. Nowadays a kid wouldn't even try unless
he had a special kit with special parts for each of those.

... Seems simple enough to re-make! I haven't searched vry hard, but the biggest challenge looks like finding a (soft )copy of the Workbook....

Try a Radio Shack kit, Models "28-278","28-280" (and maybe "28-281"). You can get them on eBay for much less than retail. Much easier than rebuilding something...
