Welcome Steve, <br><br>As you may have noticed,
there are a few other "dated" members here - those of
us who got thier first ST back when they were new.
It'll be nice to have a Fuji "expert" here. Do you have
experience with the X series as well?
I just joined and wanted to say hello. The first
camera I ever purchase was a ST-701. As the years went
by I replaced it with a Contax and then later with a
couple of Maxxum 9000 (I now mainly shoot with a Maxxum
7), but I fondly remembered learning photography with
that 701 (worked my way through college working in
camera stores).<br><br>I recently purchased another 701
off of ebay and found out my little sister still had
my old one (I'll probably try to talk her out of
it). Brings back good memories. I'll probably try to
flesh out a lens system for it (all the things I
couldn't buy as a poor high school and college
student).<br><br>Anyway, hope to help contribute to this online community.
Since I worked in camera stores during the ST series
heyday (sold at least a hundred) I may be able to answer
some questions (Its been a while though - hate to date
myself).<br><br>Steve
Ask away. You have a completely manual camera.
It's really not all that hard to learn to use it. Soon
you'll be getting terrific results.<br><br>The biggest
thing to learn is the tradeoff between shutter speed
and aperture.
Hello everyone, the names Reuben. I just got
myself a Fujica ST605, camera. Im as ameturish as one
can get. I never took any photography classes or
anything, but my friend has, and hes going to show me the
ropes. I just thought id say hi to everyone here, and
forgive me for any ameturish questions i might ask.
<br><br>Thanks<br>Reuben
>>Do any of them allow full aperture
metering with the Fuji bodies? If so, how can I tell with
which lenses (third party?)?<br><br>Indeed they do, and
they should be automatic exposure on the 901 and AZ-1
as well. The Vivitar TX mounts work only with
Vivitar TX lenses. The Tamron Adaptall mounts work only
with Tamron Adaptall lenses.<br><br>Be sure to get the
Fujica ST mounts. There's also a generic Pentax Screw
mount, but the lenses will act like an automatic screw
lens--there's no indication of max aperture on the generic
mount for open-aperture metering.<br><br>Have you seen
the Cult Classics lens website? You can read more
there.<br><br>A quick glance at eBay shops that three such mounts
have recently gone by with no bids! Too bad! Nothing
currently available there, but keep
checking.<br><br>However, Searching for "Vivitar TX Fujica" and "Adaptall
Fujica" turns up lots of mounts for sale on the
web.<br><br>Secure the mounts first, then start bidding on terrific
lenses like the Tamron SP90, the Tamron 17mm, and three
Tamron zooms that are f/2.8 the whole way through the
zoom range!<br><br>The Vivitar TXs are nice, too. I
have a 35mm 2.8.
Dude, <br><br>I'll keep an eye out for your Fuji
lens article. <br><br>I'd like to learn more about
these adapters you speak of. Do any of them allow full
aperture metering with the Fuji bodies? If so, how can I
tell with which lenses (third party?)?<br><br>Congrats
on your 135 mm win for $1. <br><br>I recently placed
a bid on a 901 with the coveted 50mm f1.4 - just
don't see to many of those.
>>In partucular, I remember that the pubs -
in review after review - consistently raved over
Fujica's optics.<br><br>"Sharp and contrasty" seems to
often be said about them.<br><br>I recently wrote a
Shutterbug article about the X-Mount series. I'm not sure
when it's going to run. The editor liked the article
quite a bit, but he has a large backlog of articles.
They went to the trouble of making me sign the
contract and tax ID stuff, so I assume it will eventually
run.<br><br>My experience with the lenses has been very
favorable. The only problem is availability. In X-Mount,
it's easy to find 50mm lenses (even the terrific 50
f/1.6). 135mm seems to be very plentiful (both Fuji and
3rd party). After that, it's rough. The odd 24, 28,
and 35 flutter by on eBay. I've not seen any short
(70-105) telephotos. Zooms are around, but they are
slow.<br><br>In screw mount, it seems even tougher. I haven't
seen much except for the normal lenses. (Of course all
M42 lenses can be used, but not with open-aperture
metering--not a problem on my 605).<br><br>To fill out the
gaps, I have a Vivitar TX mount for Fujica ST, and
Tamron Adaptall 2 mounts for both ST and X-Mount. The
Tamron SP 90 f/2.5 is an insanely great lens that
focuses down to 1/2 life size. It's the lens I tend to
use most on my X-Mount cameras.<br><br>The great
thing about these adapters is that they are 100%
compatible with the manufacturer's mounts. Tamron is _still_
making Adaptall lenses that benefit from modern design
and construction methods.<br><br>I'd love to find
more Fujica lenses, but untill I do, I'm glad the
adapters are around.<br><br>By the way, I usually put down
small "token" bids on almost all the Fujica stuff on
eBay, just in case. I won a 135mm 2.8 X-Mount just last
week--for a buck! If there's anything you really want, let
me know and I'll back off.
Very possible that some of us here may wind up
bidding against one another at some point. :)<br><br>Back
when the Fuji's were in production, I remember pubs
like Popular Pho, Modern Pho having very nice things
to say about the Fuji's in general (I read all of
the reviews back when I bought my first). In
partucular, I remember that the pubs - in review after review
- consistently raved over Fujica's optics.
I have the Ivor Matanle book (Collecting and
Using Classic SLRs), and he says nice things about the
801 and 901 (and Fujicas in general).<br><br>He
mentions that the 605 and 705 are smaller and lighter than
the 01 series, so you're probably wise to keep your
eyes open for an 01.<br><br>I'm loving my 605. I'm
always looking to score other models. Hopefully we
aren't bidding against each other. :->
Dude: I have the ST901. Like Doogie, I have a
thing for a particular model. I have one that I bought
new circa 76 and another that I picked up on e-bay -
(and again, like Doogie) I'm looking for a third. I
suspect that a lot of the STx01 series parts might be
common to the various models and therefore
interchangeable and I'm keeping a watch for "beater" 01's on
e-bay to use as parts cameras.
EBC stands for Electron Beam Coating, Fujica's
fancy name for their lens coating. I don't know much
about it. I assume it's a standard multicoating. I'm
not sure if it changed through the years.<br><br>And
I don't know if all Fujica ST and X-Mount lenses
are marked EBC.<br><br>I think Fuji still marks their
medium format and digital lenses EBC.
I just visually compared my ST605N with my AX and
STX cameras. The spool looked exactly the same
(though I didn't measure). I see a lot of "broken" and
"as is" AX's and STX's on eBay, so I'd guess you
could enlarge your scope in the search.<br><br>Which ST
do you have? I'm not sure the earlier ones are as
compact as the later ones, so you might not be able to
assume a match.
Sounds great. I only have the one ST605n (so
far), but I always watch the Fujica stuff on eBay, and
I bid on stuff that seems underpriced. Hopefully
I'll eventually be able to build up a
system.<br><br>I've had more luck picking up the Fuji bayonet stuff
than the screw-mount stuff, probably because people
with other screw-mount stuff often know about the
Fujica screw-mount bodies (which are among the last of
the Japanese screw-mount cameras).
love the 801's Dude'i bought the first one in
there first year of production about 73-74 or some time
around then that camera [along with the other two] has
never let me down ,i couldnt guess how many films have
been through it,but an avid hobbiest,four kids,etc i'm
sure your getting the picture ,the light tight
material in the back and on the mirror dampening is the
only thing needing attention ,recently had shutter
speed checked still spot on,led system in veiwfinder
suits me and seems heaps better than match needle, i
could go on and on but i'm not sure how much space one
should take up regards.doogie
Doogie,<br><br>How are the 801s? Since you have three of them I assume you like
them. The 901 appeals to me, also. They don't come up all that often on eBay.
Howdy.<br><br>Regular screw-mount lenses are
plentiful, but the special Fujica ones are tough to find.
Every once in a while they come up on eBay, either
alone or as a kit with a Fujica camera.<br><br>For the
regular lenses, go to the Photo section of eBay and
search for "M42". Also try "Pentax Screw" and "screw
mount" and "Takumar." I've also found them in pawn
shops.<br><br>Another way to get a good collection is to buy Vivitar TX
lenses and a Fujica TX adapter. There's also a Tamron
Adaptall 2 adapter for Fujica ST. These mounts are fully
compatible with the ST bodies, and act just like Fujica ST
lenses.<br><br>There are also some screw mount and Fujica ST mount
lenses available from the big camera stores on the web
and in the backs of camera magazines.<br><br>I can
provide some links if you like.<br><br>I have the ST 605.
Since it's a stopped-down metering camera, I use it
with a Super Takumar f/1.4 lens that's just great (and
pretty cheap).
I have 3x50mm f1.8 1x200mm 1x1oomm 1x35mm fujinon
screw lenses ,have no idea what they are
worth, currentley not for sale but maybe at a later date if there
was any interest.also have three st801's all bought
new by me ,would be interested in a 901 if anyone
knows off one.
All I can think of is suggesting that you pick up
a "parts body" on eBay. I've bought two working
STX-1's on eBay in the $35-$40 range. Non-working cameras
go for less. There's usually three or four for sale
at a time, but the pickings are slim right now.
There is one available now. It's working but slightly
damaged. Buying it would give you a nice stock of parts
for the future.<br><br>I'd advise checking every
couple of weeks. The stock of cameras ebbs and
flows.<br><br>Also, I've written an article for Shutterbug on Fujica
cameras. It probably won't appear for a few months, but
keep an eye open for
it.<br><br><a

I need to locate a rewinder for a STX-1N. The
gears have been stripped out in the one we have and we
need to find a replacement part. Anyone have any
reccomendations?<br><br>Thank you!<br><br>Craig Williams.
Thanks for stopping by. I'm going to be adding a
lot of stuff to this site over the next
month.<br><br>Obviously, there aren't a lot of members here yet to answer
your question. I've not been inside any of my Fujicas
yet, so I'm not sure how to get at the shutter
release. I suggest you try your question at the camera-fix
group.<br><br><a href=http://groups.yahoo.com/group/camera-fix

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knows how to get access to the shutter
release button mechanism, because it sticks each time you press it, ie. it
doesn't pop up automatically. Please help!
