Why stupid? The original was very clever and fooled those who took it too
seriously without reading carefully and looking at all the information
given. Of course, we'd all love the real thing, but...

Nothing like a good spoof. How many of you fell for "Beat the Devil" with
Humphrey Bogart and Gina Lollabrigida and Robert Morley and Jennifer Jones,
thinking it was a terrible picture full of every cliche in the book? And
then suddenly realized - yes, it has every cliche of the genre on
purpose. I was more than half way through before I cottoned on - but
rather than blame the stupidity of the picture, I praise the makers for
their ability to lead me so far astray! We need a good sense of humor to
survive this mad world we are living in.

Lightheartedly yours, in all seriousness,

Eric

And "Beat the Devil" has one of the best movie "bits"
with Peter Lorre's "What is Time?" speech followed by
Bumphrey Hogart's retort "It walks, it talks, it
philosophizes". I love that! Of course the combo of
Truman Capote (who supposedly had measles?) and John
Huston (talk about Frick and Frack!) exemplifies the
tongue-in-cheek flavor of this film (with the script
being lowered in a basket from Capote's hotel room
window because he was contagious)!!!

Still laughing and pulling this DVD out for this
weekend!

I was the person that identified numerous fakes in the 1970s and had
them withdrawn from an important japanese catalogue : Schubert 2 an d3,
1946 (!) Schubert 9th, the infamous "Chris Hoch speaking to you from
Vienna" Beethoven 5th, and so forth. Not so funny any more!

NOt bad at all.

I thought too that it should be worst. Did you understand the german
commentary at the
end of the cd; I don't. But is it of a certain interest to understand it?

I think he's just talking about which stations are connected.. I will
listen again. On the 1936 Lohengrin act iii he clearly says "In the
presence of the Reichsfuehurer and the entire Reichsgovernment" but the
rest is the usual " Radio CAnada, Radio Luxembourg." .

Hello folks,

While this is not timely, I figure it can't hurt to share something before this
list stagnates further. The weblink offers some very well considered thoughts
IMO. I add this in hopes that someone else who has not seen this may find this
as interesting as I did.

Interesting. I talked about Nov 30 with Elisabeth Furtwaengler in June, and she
still was very distressed over the cancellation of the
concert in PAris, which she attributed to American influences on UNESCO. IF
true, its amazing that the atmosphere that kept Furtwaengler
out of the US and Chicago in 1949 -- and probably prolongued his
"denazification" according to her -- still permeates US attitudes towards him.

It is not true, I can assure you, but it made good a little bit of
anti-americanism in Paris, for a disfunctional action trying to involve UNESCO
in the anniversary,

My attempted translation: Harnoncourt, who conducted the Verdi Requiem in
the morning and in the afternoon gave his own reminiscences of his great
colleague at the commemoration for the 50th anniversary of the death of the
conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler in the Brahms Hall, received not only the
notice of his honorary membership of the vienna Philharmonic, but also had
to blow out 75 candles on his birthday cake.

My question: Is there any record of Harnoncourt's remarks on WF? I'd be
curious to know what he had to say about his esteemed predecessor.

Lured by a handful of Furtwängler recordings and a very useful discography,
I decided to subscribe to the andante.com site, which is very attractive in
terms of facilities for reference and streaming music. However, I found the
audio tended to stutter in very unlistenable ways on my brand-new Compaq
laptop (other streaming services are fine), so around five weeks ago I used
the online contact page to ask for advice (after reading Andante's unhelpful
FAQ); four weeks ago I used this page again and also added an email; three
weeks ago I did the same; two weeks ago I had another go; one week ago I
cancelled my membership in disgust. I am curious to know whether others have
had the same dismal experience of andante.com's customer 'support'. I must
say it was the last thing I expected from such a well-conceived site. I
really couldn't recommend the site until they sort this appalling service
problem out.

Thanks for the warning. I went to their site this morning to check
out an interesting Szell recording, clicked on the audio samples, and
was treated to several quite pleasant samples of someone playing
Schubert’s Tod und das Mädchen quartet.

Still, it would be nice if their service worked.

I have the complete performance forst issued on the
Italien label "Idis". I believe the Andromeda edition
is just bits and pieces as opposed to the entire
concerto. According to the notes the original discs
are from de Vito's own collection. I have read
elsewhere that Henry Vogel has come firmly down on the
side that this is NOT a Furtwaengler performance. I
have not listened enough to formulate my own opinion.
There is no mention in either of the Tremine
discographies or the concert listing (but this amazing
discographical achievement (second only to Monika
Wolf's discography of Fischer-Dieskau) contains errors
and omissions). I rather like de Vito (I have a large
box set issued in Japan - where they seem to be crazy
for all things violin) that has some rather lovely
playing: Bach with Kubelik especially.
