SPLITMULTIIMAGE V1.0 RELEASED

The first version of a new tool called SplitMultiImage is now available
for download from http://www.nanunanu.org/~oliver/SplitMultiImage.html

DESCRIPTION

Starting with AmigaOS 3.5, the picture.datatype documentation defined two
new tags (PDTA_GetNumPictures and PDTA_WhichPicture), which allowed
subclasses to return different images from the same file, where relevant.
For example, TIFF image files often contain more than one image, and
WarpTIFF.datatype is able to decode any of those images on request,
returning any of the images to the application.

Unfortunately, not many applications have made use of this feature (in
fact, at the time of writing, I'm not aware of any!) and can therefore read
only the first image in a file. After requests from WarpTIFF users wanting
to know of software capable of reading all the pages in multi-page TIFF fax
files, I decided to write SplitMultiImage. Although not as nice as
Multiview having this capability built-in, SplitMultiImage at least allows
all the images to be viewed by extracting all the images from a file and
saving them separately as IFF-ILBM files.

SplitMultiImage is not restricted to TIFF files - in theory, it will work
with any datatypes supporting the new tags and for image formats that can
contain multiple images.

19 October 2001 - This round of updates is of interest mainly to WarpOS
users, although WarpJPEG has some minor optimizations in all versions.
After a lot of testing and debugging over the past few weeks, I have
finally got to the bottom of the problems with the WarpOS versions of my
datatypes (a big thank you goes to everybody who contacted about the
problems, and helped with feedback and testing). It turns out that there
were/are two separate major problems:

   i) The image corruption problem was caused by a bug in WarpUp V4 (more
specifically, the bug only affected people who have warp.library 4.0
installed). Due to this, I have no other choice than to drop
support for WarpUp V4 - from now on, WarpUp V5.0 is the minimum
requirement. For those still using WarpUp V4, not that you can
freely obtain the all important WarpUp V5.1 libs from the OS3.9
      boing bag available from http://www.amiga.com/os39

ii) There is a bug in WarpUp V5.1 (more specifically, in powerpc.library
16.1) which can cause strange things to happen - the most likely
thing being a Defiant (WarpOS housekeeping task) crash, which will
cause the PPC kernel to hang. This bug can be triggered by almost
any PPC application, including older versions of WarpJPEG, but due
to changes in the last release of WarpJPEG, WarpJPEG certainly did
help make the crashes happen more than usual. Until an official
update becomes available, fixing the bug, I recommend that users
of WarpUp V5.1 should use powerpc.library 16.1beta1 from Frank
      Wille's website: http://devnull.owl.de/~frank/powerpc_V16_1beta.lha
This beta is one month older than the official release, but does
      not contain the aforementioned bug.

Full details of the updates follow...

  WarpJPEG.datatype 44.25 - http://www.nanunanu.org/~oliver/warpjpeg.html
  -----------------------
  - Raised minimum WarpUp requirements from V4 to V5, due to cache flush
bugs in V4 which cause images to be displayed incorrectly (black
stripes, corrupt images or completely black images). These bugs
affected v44.24. WarpUp V5 does not have these problems.
  - Cleaned up the WarpOS version, fixing some potential problems that
could happen when an error occurred.
  - Minor code optimizations.
  - The installer now allows the destination of datatype files to be
    changed.

  WarpPNG.datatype 44.21 - http://www.nanunanu.org/~oliver/warppng.html
  WarpTIFF.datatype 44.5 - http://www.nanunanu.org/~oliver/warptiff.html
  WarpBMP.datatype 44.6 - http://www.nanunanu.org/~oliver/warpbmp.html
  WarpPSD.datatype 44.3 - http://www.nanunanu.org/~oliver/warppsd.html
  ----------------------
  - Raised minimum WarpUp requirements from V4 to V5, due to cache flush
bugs in V4 which cause images to be displayed incorrectly (black
stripes, corrupt images or completely black images). These bugs
affected the previous version. WarpUp V5 does not have these
    problems.
  - Cleaned up the WarpOS version, fixing some potential problems that
could happen when an error occurred.
  - The installer now allows the destination of datatype files to be
    changed.

6 October 2001 - Since the latest updates of my WarpDTs were released,
some users have reported problems which concern the reworked engine in
the latest WarpOS versions of the WarpDTs. Symptoms are that images
are shown with black horizontal stripes or are partially corrupt,
and/or PPC exceptions and Defiant crashes.

I know I've mentioned these problems already, and I'm also aware that
many users have not experienced any of these problems, but I am now
recommending that users of the WarpOS versions of the WarpDTs revert to
the previous versions, which are now all available on my website, until
I find a solution to these problems. I thought I would have found a
solution by now, but so far I have been unable to pin down exactly what
is causing the problems :(

If you have experienced any of these problems (and are able to
reproduce the symptoms relatively easily) and would like to help with
beta testing, then please let me know.

Note: the 68K and MorphOS versions are totally unaffected by these
problems, which only happen with the WarpOS version. Therefore
users of the 68K or MorphOS versions can continue to use the latest
versions.
