So then, any chance of getting a look at that source code if
I ::promise:: not to give it to anyone? I'd love to be able to fix a
couple of minor issues I'm having with this nearly perfect Java IDE...

The big issue is that Gel is dependant on a variety of commercial
components including the DevExpress Toolbars, VCLZip and common dialog
package whose name escapes me. You would need those packages in order to
be able to do anything useful.

Given that I haven't been in a position to do much work on Gel for the
last six months I'm not adverse to opening development or transitioning
to someone else doing the work if he or she desires to do so.

Alessandro,

I agree with you about that, but none of them are "lightweight
tools", like Gel. I don't know either if such tool is available for
Linux platform. Because of that, in Linux I still prefer VI and Emacs.

   Thanks,

Daniel

there exists other free IDE not as lightweight as Gel, but also not as big as netbeans or eclipse:
schmortopf : http://www.snowraver.org/java/Schmortopf/index.htm
jGrasp: http://www.eng.auburn.edu/grasp/
bluej: http://www.bluej.org/

I once used to use Gel, but as far as I'm teaching java, I want to be able to use J2SE 1.5.
To my knowing - and for the moment -, schmortopf is the only one (with netbeans) that has such capability.
All of these IDE are written in java, so are available under linux platforms.

Usually we not use to convert .class into .exe files.
But you can package your java application into a multiplatforma executable jar file - note you need Java JRE installed to run your package.

see a good tutorial for it:

Well, actually I don't know, but I know that you don't need to leave
Gel to do so, since there is a Jar Maker plugin.

You can get it on http://www.gexperts.com/plugins.html

You can use either Anjuta (well it's preffered by C/C++ developers) 'cause it support a lot of languages (including java, pascal, perl, python, etc).

Hi, Daniel

Yes, those IDEs are heavy weight, i.e,  minimum hardware is 256MB and  500MHz CPU.  BUT all then are Linux ready. I use then on a Debian/Kurumin distro in a very stupid way : JDeveloper for my job, Eclipse for college projects, and JBuilder for my personal projects ( dah !!)

I really   miss a lightweight Java IDE for Linux, as GEL . But there is a lot of good tips just after your post. Thank you.

P.S. On  Linux those IDE starts faster then Win;
Alessandro

I know that Gerald is very busy with real life. And i know that he's not planning to publich GEL source code. But some time ago, in this list, there was a conversation about creating a new version of Gel, maybe programmed in .NET.

That version could even be run on windows usign mono...

Gerald, it would be possible to release some part of GEL code to help that new development? I know that some part of the code are propietary, but i think that a conversion from delphi to .Net would be possible from the current version of GEL, and it can be possible to find some .NET Open Source code to replace these propietary parts (or maybe, there are good enough developers in this list to create them).

What do you think? anyone interested on an open source development?

David.

Peich,

Interested in open source development I AM, and I think other developers too.

But, please NO DOT NET!

Just think: GEL is FAST and lightweight because it is an Win32 PE Executable!
If it is a JAVA IDE, and we want it FAST, why should we develop it using .NET?  If it will be p-code, why not JAVA itself?

Another point: If I'm not mistaken, GEL is written in DELPHI (or maybe Borland C Builder?), and it uses a lot of FREE AND OPEN SOURCE COMPONENTS for Delphi, like Gerarld already  said. And most components are not available for Delphi 8  / .Net platform, right? The shortest path is to keep it written in Delphi.

Well, it is IMHO,

That version could even be run on windows usign mono...

Gerald, it would be possible to release some part of GEL code to help that new development? I know that some part of the code are propietary, but i think that a conversion from delphi to .Net would be possible from the current version of GEL, and it can be possible to find some .NET Open Source code to replace these propietary parts (or maybe, there are good enough developers in this list to create them).

What do you think? anyone interested on an open source development?

David.

PD: Sorry for my poor english, i'm spanish native.

Ok, I downloaded the jar plug-in and I went into
options, plug-ins and clicked "Add" and I recieved an
error telling me that "No JVM exists at the following
location: C:\j2sdk1.4.2_04\bin." This is the location
of my Java installation and everthing has been working
great until this. Any suggestions?

There is also www.jedit.com, which looks attractive, tho I have not had the
need to try it. Gel still does everything I need and should be faster than
a Java implementation.

Try setting your JVM to C:\j2sdk1.4.2_04 (remove \bin)...

You can use "Excelsior Jet" to compile java files into executable
files. The personal edition is free.

Hey everyone,
I just joined this group recently, and today I got a problem. I'm a
new student in high school learn Java, so I'm may not imply the
technical terms correctly.

I have a folder called 'cs1lib', inside it there are many folders
and one is called 'karel', inside it are many classes. I typed 'import
cs1lib.karel.*' in one of my Java(text) file and saved it in the same
folder as the cs1lib folder.

But when I tried to compile it it says package not found, even
though when I'm typing the file Gel auto-completed the import
statement for me. So I assume Gel knows there's a 'cs1lib' folder. But
the compiler just keep giving me that error.

Help anyone?

Hi--

I recently had to rebuild my machine and now Gel has no JDK referenced.

I have installed a JDK at...

C:\j2sdk1.4.2_05

...but I don't know how to easily setup Gel's >Options, >JDK, dialog.

Is there a simple and quick way to do this without having to manually set
all of the paths in this dialog?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi, guis.

I'd like to bring up an issue mentioned at the Acabit
support forum of Gel (btw, is that forum still in
use?).

I would very much like to use the PrettyPrinter
plugin, but it seems to work only once per Gel start.
When invoked for a first time plugin works perfectly.
After that it gives the error: "Unable to parse the
file.", even on the file it formatted seconds ago.
This is absolutly constant and reproducible behaviour.
I'm experiencing it in both RC39 and RC40, using both
JDK 1.3 and 1.4.2 as an embedded one.

Can anyone help, please?

I'm guessing you want something like:

package cs1lib;

import cs1lib.karel.*;

public class xyz {

// In here you can now reference a class from the cs1lib.karel package
// without causing a compile time error.

}
