---------------------------------------------------------------
Evolutionary computation (EC) and multi-agent systems and simulation
(MASS) both involve populations of agents. EC is a learning technique
by which a population of individual agents adapt according to the
selection pressures exerted by an environment; MASS seeks to
understand how to coordinate the actions of a population of (possibly
selfish) autonomous agents that share an environment so that some
outcome is achieved. Both EC and MASS have top-down and bottom-up
features. For example, some aspects of multi-agent system engineering
(e.g., mechanism design) are concerned with how top-down structure can
constrain or influence individual decisions. Similarly, most work in
EC is concerned with how to engineer selective pressures to drive the
evolution of individual behavior towards some desired goal. Multi-agent
simulation (also called agent-based modeling) addresses the bottom-up
issue of how collective behavior emerges from individual action.
Likewise, the study of evolutionary dynamics within EC (for example in
coevolution) often considers how population-level phenomena emerge from
individual-level interactions. Thus, at a high level, we may view EC and
MASS as examining and utilizing analogous processes. It is therefore
natural to consider how knowledge gained within EC may be relevant to
MASS, and vice versa; indeed, applications and techniques from one field
have often made use of technologies and algorithms from the other field.
Studying EC and MASS in combination is warranted and has the potential
to contribute to both fields.

The goal of this workshop is to facilitate the examination and
development of techniques at the intersection of evolutionary
computation and multi-agent systems and simulation.

The ECoMASS workshop welcomes original submissions in the theory and
practice on all aspects of Evolutionary Computation and Multi-Agent
Systems and Simulation, which include (but are not limited to) the
following topics and themes:

-Multi-agent systems and agent-based models utilizing evolutionary
computation
-Optimization of multi-agent systems and agent-based models using
evolutionary computation
-Evolutionary computation models which rely not on explicit fitness
functions but rather implicit fitness functions defined by the
relationship to other individuals / agents
-Applications utilizing MASS and EC in combination
-Biological agent-based models (usually called individual-based
models) involving evolution
-Evolution of cooperation and altruism
-Genotypic representation of the complex phenotypic strategies of MASS
-Evolutionary learning within MASS (including Baldwinian learning and
phenotypic plasticity)
-Emergence and feedbacks
-Open-ended strategy spaces and evolution
-Adaptive individuals within evolving populations

Workshop Description

Within the last decade, the use of computational intelligence techniques
for solving challenging defense related problems has achieved widespread
acceptance. The genesis of this interest lies in the fact that repeated
attempts of using more traditional techniques have left many important
problems unsolved, and in some cases, not addressed. Additionally, new
problems have emerged that are difficult to tackle with conventional
methods, since social, cultural and human behavioral factors tend to be
at the heart of these new types of problems (e.g. within the broad areas
of the global war on terrorism, homeland security, and force protection).

The purpose of the workshop is to introduce and discuss current and
ongoing efforts in using computational intelligence techniques in
attacking and solving defense-related problems, with a focus on genetic
and evolutionary computation techniques. These include, but are not
limited to the following:

* Genetic and evolutionary techniques in the design of military systems
and sub-systems.
* Genetic and evolutionary techniques for logistics and scheduling of
military operations.
* Genetic and evolutionary algorithms (GEAs) in strategic planning and
tactical decision making.
* Multiobjective GEAs for examining tradeoffs in military, security, and
counter-terrorism procedures.
* Automated discovery of tactics and procedures for site security, force
protection, and consequence management.
* Genetics-based knowledge discovery and data mining of large databases
used to recognize patterns of individual behavior.
* Co-evolutionary for simultaneous red-blue team strategic-tactical
simulation and gaming.
* Other computational intelligence techniques for applications in the
areas listed above.

The workshop invites completed or ongoing work in using computational
intelligence techniques for addressing these or any other applications
to defense related problems. It is intended to encourage communication
between active researchers and practitioners to better understand the
current scope of efforts within this domain. The ultimate goal is to
understand, discuss, and help set future directions for computational
intelligence in defense problems.

Workshop Description

The seventh annual Undergraduate Student Workshop at a GECCO conference
will occur on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 as part of the GECCO-2009
conference in Montreal, QC, Canada. The workshop will provide an
opportunity for undergraduate students to present their research in
evolutionary computation. Typically, presentations will describe
senior-level research projects supervised by a faculty mentor; however,
summer research projects or exceptional course projects may also be
appropriate.

The workshop will be a half-day event, during which approximately eight
undergraduate students will present their work to each other, to
participating students' faculty mentors, and to GECCO participants
interested in undergraduate research. Students should plan on 20-minute
presentations, followed by five minutes of questions and discussion.

Students invited to the workshop will also participate in the conference
poster session. Students will display posters summarizing their work,
allowing the larger GECCO community to see what's being done by
undergraduates in evolutionary computation. The poster session will also
be a great opportunity for networking!

The goals of the Undergraduate Student Workshop are to:
(*) provide a forum allowing undergraduate students to put a capstone on
their undergraduate research activities, by presenting their work at an
international conference
(*) encourage teaching faculty to consider undergraduate research
opportunities for their students in the EC field
(*) prepare undergraduate students for graduate work in EC areas
(*) encourage sharing and networking amongst teaching faculty with
students participating in undergraduate research projects in EC
(*) provide networking opportunities for graduate school faculty and
undergraduate students interested in pursuing advanced degrees, and
(*) encourage more emphasis on education at the GECCO conference

Workshop Format

We anticipate a half-day workshop with approximately 8 presentations,
organized according to the following schedule:
14:00 – 14:10 Workshop welcome
14:10 – 15:50 Four presentations (20 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A each)
15:50 – 16:10 Coffee break and informal discussion
16:10 – 17:50 Four presentations (20 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A each)
17:50 – 18:00 Discussion and planning for future workshops

Submissions

Students are invited to submit papers not to exceed 6 pages that must
strictly adhere to the ACM formatting rules; Word and LaTex templates
are provided at http://www.sigevo.org/gecco-2009/papers.html.

Papers should be submitted in PDF format only and should be submitted
via email to ayworkshops@.... Be sure to place the text
"GECCO 2009 UGWS" in the subject line of your message.

For additional information, please refer to the workshop web site at
http://math.uaa.alaska.edu/~ugws2009/

In addition, each paper must be accompanied by an email message from a
supervising faculty member verifying that the author(s) performed the
research described in the paper while enrolled as undergraduate students
during the 2007-8 and/or 2008-9 academic year. By custom, faculty
members are not named co-authors of Undergraduate Student Workshop
papers, although they may be recognized in the acknowledgments section
of the paper.

Faculty Participation

Since many undergraduate students do not normally read the EC newsgroups
and mailing lists, faculty participation is a key element for promoting
this workshop.

Faculty who have taught undergraduate courses related to evolutionary
computation, or who have supervised undergraduate research activities in
the field, are encouraged to consider which of their outstanding
students might wish to submit papers for the workshop. In addition,
faculty members who are interested in undergraduate education may serve
on the workshop panel. The panel will provide an excellent opportunity
for sharing project ideas and pedagogy related to evolutionary
computation. Interested faculty members should contact the workshop
organizers at ayworkshops@....

   *SUBMISSIONS*

   *Full Papers*
Regular paper submissions must present original, highly
innovative, prospective and forward-looking research in one or
more of the themes given above. Full papers must break new
ground, present new insight, deliver a significant research
contribution and provide validated support for its results and
conclusions. Successful submissions typically represent a major
advance for the field of wearable computing, referencing and
relating the contribution to existing research work, giving a
comprehensive, detailed and understandable explanation of a
device, system, study, theory or method, and support the
findings with a compelling evaluation and/or validation. Each
paper must be submitted as a single PDF file in IEEE Computer
Science Press 8.5x11 inch two-column format (not longer than
eight pages in length). Accepted regular papers will be
included in the printed conference main proceedings and
presented in the paper sessions. Submissions to ISWC'09 must
not be under review by any other conference or publication
during the ISWC review cycle, and must not be previously
published or accepted for publication elsewhere.

   *Notes and Posters*
Notes (not longer than four pages in length) and posters (not
longer than two pages in length) must report new results and
provide support for the results as a novel and valuable
contribution to the field - just like full papers. Notes are
intended for succinct work that is nonetheless in a mature
state ready for inclusion in archival proceedings. Posters are
intended to present very concise, yet focused and significant
research results. Both notes and posters will be held to the
same standard of scientific quality as full papers, albeit for
a shorter presentation, and must still state how they fit with
respect to related work, and provide a compelling explanation
and validation. Notes and posters must be submitted as single
PDF file in IEEE Computer Science Press 8.5x11-inch two-column
format. Accepted notes and posters will be published in the
conference main proceedings. Notes will be presented in the
paper sessions of the conference, posters will be presented at
the conference poster and demonstration session.

   *Late Breaking Results*
This submission format aims at presenting very topical issues
and late breaking application oriented results in all areas of
wearable computing. Just like regular papers, late breaking
results should present directing research, but in a very
focused and compact format. Late breaking results are not
understood as short papers condensed into less page space, but
are intended to present pointed results at a high level of
technicality. LBR submissions can gain from an "extended
submission deadline" (May 18, 2009), and should be formatted in
Springer LNCS single column format, not exceeding 8 pages).
They will undergo a scientific reviewing process managed by the
LBR program committee under the steering of the LBR chair.
Accepted LBRs will be presented at the conference, and will be
published in the "Advances in Wearable Computing" book of the
OCG (adjunct proceedings), accompanying the conference
   proceedings.

   *Video Papers*
Submissions are invited to present novel wearable computing
systems, devices or just designs, or demonstrate innovative
styles of interaction or usability of those systems - in a
lively format: as a video. Video clips should be no longer than
8 minutes and be accompanied by a 4 page (or approx. 2000
words) written summary. Video paper submissions should be
formatted in Springer LNCS single column format, and not
exceeding 4 pages). Accepted video papers will be published in
the "Advances in Wearable Computing" book of the OCG,
accompanying the conference proceedings. The author(s) of a
video are expected to present a brief introduction at the
conference, while all full videos will be presented during the
ISWC'09 night show - a special event in the frame of the 30th
anniversary of the Ars Electronica Festival. Video papers will
be published in the ISWC'09 adjunct proceedings, all video
clips will be presented in the ISWC'09 Video DVD.

*Reviewing Process for Papers, Notes, Posters, LBRs and Videos*
ISWC'09 will adopt a double-blind process for full papers,
notes and posters - as well as for late breaking results and
video papers. Authors' names and their affiliations must not be
revealed or mentioned anywhere in the submission. Please refer
to the paper submission link at the conference website
(www.iswc.net). Questions about the papers, notes and posters
should be directed to progchair@..., about late breaking
results submissions to lbrchair@..., and about video
   papers to videochair@....

   *Demos*
Demonstrations provide an opportunity to show research
prototypes and works-in-progress to colleagues for comment in a
relaxed atmosphere. Both independent demonstrations and those
accompanying accepted papers and posters are welcome.
Demonstrations will not be published in the main conference
proceedings, but will be included in the adjunct proceedings.
Accommodations (power, space, etc...) will be limited, so
participants should plan to be mobile and self-supported. To
apply to perform a demonstration, please submit (i) a one-page
summary that describes what you plan to demonstrate, including
a 200 word abstract (ii) a photo or diagram to be included in
the demonstration handout alongside the abstract (minimum size
   640 x 480 pixels), and (iii) to demonstrations@... by
Monday, May 18, 2009. Only the abstract will be included in the
"Advances in Wearable Com-puting" book (adjunct proceedings),
the rest of the summary will be used to judge the quality of
   the submission.

   *Design Contest*
Participating at the ISWC design contest is a great opportunity
to showcase your product or prototype to the leaders in
wearable computing. The design contest will take place during
the conference banquet dinner on Sunday, September 6, 2009 and
can be used to demonstrate your "smart gadgets" (plan to be

Abstract :

Autonomous Search is a new paradigm, which aims at producing adaptive and
self-adaptive algorithms, and is now rising and crossing several computer
science areas, including the integration of tools from machine learning,
combinatorial optimization or constraint programming. In this context, the
purpose of this thesis focuses on autonomous local search for combinatorial
problems solving. The definition and the management of neighborhood functions
is a key issue when using local search algorithms to solve difficult
combinatorial optimization problems. Unfortunately, the neighborhood is often
problem dependant and requires a great expertise to achieve good performances.
Therefore, in order to provide more autonomous solving facilities, we propose to
automatically generate suitable neighborhood functions together with their
control features in a uniform solving framework. We will use genetic programming
to facilitate the design of functions and also control techniques including
learning mechanisms. Finally, the integration of the approach will also be
considered in a distributed framework in order to optimize the stages of
knowledge acquisition and of resolution.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Twelfth International Workshop on Learning Classifier Systems
(IWLCS 2009) will be held in Montreal, Canada, Thursday, July 9, 2009
during the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference
(GECCO-2009), July 8-12, 2009.

Originally, Learning Classifier Systems (LCSs) were introduced by John
H. Holland as a way of applying evolutionary computation to machine
learning and adaptive behavior problems. Since then, the LCS paradigm
has broadened greatly into a framework that encompasses many
representations, rule discovery mechanisms, and credit assignment
schemes.

Current LCS applications range from data mining, to automated
innovation and the on-line control of cognitive systems. LCS research
includes various actual system approaches: While Wilson's accuracy-
based XCS system (1995) has received the highest attention and gained
the highest reputation, studies and developments of other LCSs are
usually discussed and contrasted. Advances in machine learning, and
reinforcement learning in particular, as well as in evolutionary
computation have brought LCS systems the necessary competence and
guaranteed learning properties. Novel insights in machine learning and
evolutionary computation are being integrated into the LCS framework.

Thus, we invite submissions that discuss recent developments in all
areas of research on, and applications of, Learning Classifier Systems.
IWLCS is the event that brings together most of the core researchers
in classifier systems. Moreover, a free introductory tutorial on LCSs
is presented the day before the workshop at GECCO 2009. Tutorial and
IWLCS workshop thus also provide an opportunity for researchers
interested in LCSs to get an impression of the current research
directions in the field as well as a guideline for the application of
LCSs to their problem domain.

Bill, your GP bib contains too much information for him. I guess he just want to
know whether even parity, artificial ant, etc can be considered as benchmarks or
just toy problems.

Honestly, so far I have not seen a concrete agreement on the benchmarks although
people frequently use some common problems (like the ones I just mentioned
above) in their research.

It would be nice and useful to have a discussion here and reach a firm
agreement. :-)

Designing, Implementing and Analyzing Effective Heuristics

                                SLS 2009

                 3-5 September, 2009. Brussels, Belgium

More details and up-to-date information at
                         iridia.ulb.ac.be/sls2009

Scope of the Workshop
======================

Stochastic local search (SLS) algorithms are among the most powerful
techniques for solving computationally hard problems in many areas
of computing science, operations research and engineering. SLS
techniques range from rather simple constructive and iterative
improvement algorithms to general-purpose SLS methods, also widely
known as metaheuristics, such as ant colony optimization,
evolutionary computation, iterated local search, memetic algorithms,
simulated annealing, tabu search and variable neighbourhood search.

In recent years, it has become evident that the development of
effective SLS algorithms is a highly complex engineering process
that typically combines aspects of algorithm design and
implementation with empirical analysis and problem-specific
background knowledge. The difficulty of this process is in part due
to the complexity of the problems being tackled and in part due to
the large number of degrees of freedom researchers and practitioners
   face when developing SLS algorithms.

This development process needs to be assisted by a sound methodology
that adresses the issues arising in the phases of algorithm design,
implementation, tuning and experimental evaluation. In addition,
more research is required to understand which SLS techniques are
best suited for particular problem types and to better understand
the relationship between algorithm components, parameter settings,
   problem characteristics and performance.

Relevant Research Areas
========================

The aim of this workshop is to stress the importance of an
integration of relevant aspects of SLS research into a more coherent
engineering methodology and to bring together researchers that work
in various fields, including computing science, operations research,
metaheuristics, algorithmics, statistics and application areas.

SLS 2009 solicits contributions dealing with any aspect of
engineering stochastic local search algorithms. Typical, but not
   exclusive, topics of interest are:

+ Methodological developments for the implementation of SLS
algorithms (engineering procedures, integration of tools in the
       SLS engineering process, ...)

+ In-depth experimental studies of SLS algorithms (behavior of SLS
algorithms, comparison of SLS algorithms, ...), problem
characteristics (search space analysis, ...) and their
       impact on algorithm performance.

+ Tools for the assistance in the development process of SLS
algorithms (software libraries, automatic and semi-automatic
       tuning procedures, learning techniques, ...).

+ Case studies in the principled development of well designed
SLS algorithms for practically relevant problems.

+ Aspects that become relevant when moving from "classical"
NP-hard problems to those including multiple objectives,
stochastic information or dynamically changing data.

+ New algorithmic developments (usage of AI/OR techniques, large
scale neighbourhood searches, new SLS methods, data structures,
       distributed algorithms, ...)

+ Theoretical analysis of SLS behaviour and their impact
on algorithm design (analysis of operators, dynamic behaviour
       of SLS algorithms, ...)

                      Sponsored by ACM SIGEVO
                  http://www.sigevo.org/GECCO-2009

We are pleased to announce the official start of the second contest of the
GECCO-2009 Simulated Car Racing competition, titled Optimizing Car Setup.

*Important Dates*

    * Submission deadline: July 1st 2009
    * Conference: July 8th-12th 2009

*The Goal*

The second contest simulates the days before a race when mechanics and
pilots work on the car setup to find the one which will result in the best
performance. The goal is to build an evolutionary algorithm that can replace the
team of mechanics and pilots and can find the best car setup (e.g., gear ratio,
wing area and angle, spring setup) on a given track.

*Rules and Regulations*

The contest involves three tracks. The evolutionary algorithm will have to find
the best car setup for each one of the tracks. The contest is divided into an
optimization phase and an evaluation phase. During the optimization phase, the
evolutionary algorithm will be applied to search for the best parameter setting.
During the evaluation phase, the best solution will be scored according to the
distance covered in a fixed amount of game time (or game tics).

A parameter setting is represented by a vector of real numbers. The
competition software provides an API to evaluate a specific parameter setting on
a track and returns the best lap time, the top speed, the distance raced, and
the damage suffered. Through the API, it is possible to specify the amount of
game tics to use for evaluating a car setup. The game tics spent for an
evaluation are subtracted from the total amount of game tics available. When the
10 millions of game tics are exhausted or the evaluation process has taken up
more than 2 hours of CPU time, no further evaluation will be possible.

*Competition Software*

The competition software, including the servers for Linux & Windows, the
C++ and Java clients, can be downloaded from the competition webpage:

The design contest will take place during
the conference banquet dinner on Sunday, September 6, 2009 and
can be used to demonstrate your "smart gadgets" (plan to be
mobile and self-supported). Contributions are encouraged from
all areas of wearable computing, from technologies to textiles,
from potential employers to product vendors. Direct questions
related to the Design Contest to designcontest@....

Hello everybody!

I hope this list is an appropriate place to ask my question.

It's going to be rather lenthy mail since I need to put across some
background. Thanks in advance for your attention.

Imagine we have a system with N numerical inputs and 1 numerical output.
Let's say that using GP I want to guess the implicit relation between
inputs and output. The criterion for the better fitness will be the
lesser summarized error of the candidate solution at K historical samples.

Very classical statement.

Then to be concrete let's say I have N=30 (number of inputs) and K=6
(number of historical samples). As you see N is several times greater
than K.

Now, if I wanted to use linear regression (or any parametric model
with about 30 parameters) - there would be now way to
proceed since input data set is too small to resolve against 30
unknown coefficients.

But I can easily try to attack the problem with GP.
Formally nothing prevents me from doing so.

But if paramtric model fail to deal with this case -
****

1. what is so
special about symbolic regression that it does allow us to do this?

2. is there any prerequisites for problem statement to be able to use
GP?

****

If we look at this as quantities of information - it's OK to derive
values for 30 coefficients from 30 facts about the model (30 samples).
But GP pretends to be able to find a formula interconnecting 30 inputs
basing on 6 facts...

I'm really sorry for not being able to describe my concerns more
precisely but I think I've managed to conduct the feel of the
problem.

Thanks!

Sergey
