Hi all -

I'm setting up Genius to help me study Dutch. My biggest vocabulary challenge at
the
moment is learning genders of nouns. I'd love some advice on how to make
flashcards that
quiz me on the base noun, the gender of the noun, and the translation of the
noun. At the
moment I'm somewhat at a loss for the best way to do this (sorta needs three
card-states)
- but I figure people studying many other languages have had the same problem,
so
perhaps you could give me a little advice?

Thank you!

"Learn" means use more items that you haven't studied yet (where the
score is "--")
"Review" means the opposite.

There's a tooltip on the slider that says the same thing. I agree it's
confusing, but I couldn't think of a better solution. Any ideas?

Great! I'm studying Swedish so I'd be curious as to what I can
recognize :)

Yes, Genius can import tab-delimited text files. Just make a text file
like this:
foo bar
blah blah
with tabs between the columns, and use "Import..." under the File menu.

Awesome! I'm in the Bay Area. It sounds like that's no longer being
shown in SF anymore?

Probably not on memory, since you guys already had one. Maybe on study
skills, or on alpha consciousness. I'll check out the current exhibits
at the Exploratorium and we can talk more off-list.

John: Love that Genius. Is there a way to import questions/answers
from, say, a text file, that will automatically load into a new Genius
file? I would like to create a file of common Latin phrases ("non
compos mentis," "etcetera," etc.), and will type it all out if
necessary, just looking for a shortcut. Keep up the good work, Freezing

have done a lot of work on Memory, including a major exhibition that is

I'm wondering if there was something in all this that could translate
to an exhibit. Any ideas? Thanks again. D.

Weclome to the new website:

www.geniusfiles.info

Now that I have posted all of the lists you sent me, I am beginning to see
some issues with the evil plan. Taken out of the context, the lists kind of
lose
their usefulness. For example, I posted a vocab list for Korean. However,
unless you were doing the on-line Korean course at U of Michigan, it is not
much more than a random list of Korean words that you would probably have
no interest in studying. Therefore, this service is going to be of much less
use
to those of us across the world from each other than people taking a course or
something together. Of course, those working on a course/project together
can pretty easily share the files themselves and probably have little use for
such a service. Basically, the only way this will be of use is once we have
cataloged every possible list that anyone would need. Counter arguments
anyone?

Hi,

The quiz items appear in large text if they're only one line of text.
If they're multiple lines of text, they appear in small text.

Hope that helps,

Hi; I just downloaded Genius, and for the half-hour I've used it, I've liked the
way it works.
Thank you, Mr. Chang.
However, I have one problem: I'm studying Japanese, and kanji (Chinese-origin
characters)
are rather hard to recognize (for a beginner) when they are 10 pixels tall.

Is there a way to change the font size, at least during quizzes? I think there
is, because the
US state capital sample uses larger text, but I haven't found any info in the
menus, help
text, the version info, or Mr Chang's website.

I apologize if there is some obvious way to do this that I am ignorant of, and I
thank you
for any help.

Oh, now that you explain that, it makes sense. You
were using the word "Review" in the sense of, "Review
the items once again that you've already been
learning/quizzing." I was thinking of review in the
sense of, "Review the new material before you quiz
yourself on it." As in, first go around in the
learning process.

In essence, then, what that slider is designed to do
is mix the quiz batch between only new items, only old
items, or a blend of both. Is that correct? Previously
I was thinking perhaps it caused the program to
perform differently ... a beforehand practicing mode
vs a testing mode now that I've spent time learning
the items.

I don't know if confusion could be minimized by
selecting two different words that are less vague, or
by simply explaining more in the help file. Perhaps
both, but I would definately like to see more
explanation of the intended purpose for things and how
to go about using them. Although I'm sure it's
blatantly obvious to you, as the creator.

Yes, I see what you mean about editing existing items.
Tabbing through each column takes you to the next item
and the next and the next. Which seems as it should
be. I was thinking more of how Tab should work when
creating the items in the first place. Which is kind
of like being perpetually at the end of the list. Yes,
I think using the Enter key would be a good choice
with which to end editing. Enter, or a final press of
the Tab key, either one.

Is that to say that in place of using drawers for
Notes and Info, you would make them into columns,
along with Group and Type?

Yup.

"Review Only" tells it not to use any "new" items, that is, items where
the score is blank. So in this case, with a new list, there is nothing
to review. Some other people have been confused at this, so perhaps I
need to change it. Any suggestions?

Hmm, if you're editing in the middle of an existing document, it
behaves correctly (it cycles through each field). I guess this is only
the case where you're at the end of the document. How about making the
Enter key end editing?

That must be a bug. I'll look at it.

No "hard" limits, but you'll hit a performance ceiling.

One of the major changes I'm looking to make in the next major release
is moving to an embedded database technology. This should improve
performance and enable new features (like iTunes-style "Smart
Playlists").

Yes, actually, I had implemented this in a development build but didn't
put it into 1.5.3. I can do this (and at least the "Reset" bug fix)
for 1.5.4.

Thanks for your feedback!

What do you mean by image comments?

The biggest feature that I'm planning for the next major release is
multimedia support (images and sounds). I don't have much free time on
my hands right now and I'm waiting to code for Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger",
which has an embedded database technology which I want to take
advantage of. This does mean that Genius 2 will require Mac OS X
v10.4... (It will also change the file format, although it will be
able to import Genius 1.5 files. If you're doing the web repository
you should take this into account.)

Okay John, here are a few thoughts, questions, observations and/or suggestions
that I
have at the moment.

The percentage bar at the bottom ... it tells me what percentage of the list I
have
reviewed/studied up to that point, is that correct?

Let's say I put in a brand new list of ten items. If I then select "Review Only"
the program
tells me there is nothing to review. Why is that?

The inclusion of shortcuts for Importance level is a nice improvement. Here's
another
change that I think would be helpful. When entering a new item, I use Tab to go
to each
new field. When I get to the end of a row I expect that entering "Tab" one last
time will
either 1) complete the new item, taking me out of "edit" mode or 2) complete the
new item
and take me to the next line to begin entering another new item. Instead, Tab
takes me
back to the beginning of the same line, still in edit mode and then I either
have to choose
control + shift + n to enter a new item or I have to click outside the line to
"enter" it.
Could that process be changed to something a little more final?

If I choose Control + = it brings up a dialogue asking if I really want to reset
the item. The
default choice is "Reset" but when I hit enter on my keyboard nothing happens
and I get
the system error sound. I have to reach up with the mouse and choose Reset
manually.
Can this process be changed?

Is there a limit to how many items I can have in any particular Genius file?

Say I want to be able to see the Info and/or Notes windows every time I work
with a
particular file. I open them and when I'm finished working, I save the file.
Next time I open
it, my columns are still as I set them, but the Info and Notes windows are
closed. Could
this part of the layout be saved and remembered as well?

Say I'm only using one Genius file for my study needs ... a big list of general
Spanish
vocabulary, for example. In that instance, I'd love to have that file open
automatically every
time I start Genius (being that it was the last file I worked on). The default,
it seems, is for
Genius to start and open a new blank window. Obviously I could make an alias of
my
Genius file and click on that, but that's just one more icon on the dock or
desktop or
wherever. Is it possible that Genius could be set to start with whatever file
was last worked
on?

Okay, that's it for now. Thanks, as always for the program and the feedback!

John,

As you have probably noticed, people are asking questions about vocab
lists
when they are critiquing the program on version tracker. I am seeing
a very
lucrative (or at least potentially inundating) requirement to start
cataloging all
the conceivable lists in a central repository. I, for one, would at
least like to
think that all my work was going to have a lasting value while I am
sitting here
turning mounds of hangul flash cards into Genius lists. I would be
more than
happy to post my vocab lists onto a website and swap them out for
Japanese
or something.

So long story short, are you going to do it, or would you mind if I
start it up (strictly voluntary)?

Other issues:
1. How exactly does the export function work?

2. Is there a print function? I would really like to be able to
print the lists back
into flash card form but I am not a code writer so all I could do is
describe a
requirement for someone as to how it could conceivably work and what
the
output should look like (basically the Tuttle Kanji cards).

3. I also like the image comments for visual things and chinese
ideograms.

Thanks again for this little gem.

Okay, excellent. Having keyboard shortcuts to set the
importance level of on item is a nice improvement.
Having played around with the beta file, I have
several observations/suggestions. Shall I present them
one at a time or all at once?

It's just extra information for you. Genius doesn't use it.

Yes, I think that's really annoying, too. So...

Do you want to play beta tester and give this a shot?
http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/Software/Genius-1.5.3.zip

It contains mostly aesthetic changes so it should be pretty stable. I
haven't posted it to VersionTracker yet. Let me know how it goes.

Hey there, John. Thanks for opening this forum back up.

I'm curious, can you tell me a little more about how you intended for
the Group and Type
selections to be used in Genius? For instance, can I quiz according
to group or type, or is it
just extra information for me to organize by?

Also, is there a way to set the importance of an item from the
keyboard without having to
stop and reach up with the mouse?
