Hi.
I'd like to use Genius to learn Pitjantjatjarra, an Australia
Indigenous language. The problem is that the language has unusual
phonemes (retroflex consonants) that are normally indicated by
underlining. I can't work out how to underline individual letters.
So, how should I handle this, as Genius doesn't support text
styles? I gather I should be using the Special Characters function
instead, but I'm not quite sure how.
Regards
David

Just use the search box to look for the "type" you're after. So search
on "noun" to do nouns. That gives you a result list you can revise on
its own.
First off I'd like to say that Genius is impacting my life
tremendously in that it's my key to learning Japanese vocabulary
(which is the language I currently attempt to function in on a daily
basis). Now then, Genius is a decent little app and it functions just
fine on its own, but there's one feature that desperately needs to be
implemented. That is, font size control. The default font size is
fairly small and since there's no way to change it, it's basically
impossible to use it for learning and studying kanji. I imagine this
would not be a very difficult change to implement and I hope that you
take it into consideration.
Anyway, thanks for such an awesome program.
I recently downloaded Genius and am using it to learn my Latin
vocabulary words for my upcoming exams. I've been inputing the words
and filling in the 'Type' field with information such as 'noun',
'adjective', 'adverb' etc.
I was wondering, is it possible to narrow each 'learning' or 'review'
exercise to a specified 'Type'? For example, if I want to revise just
my adjectives, is it possible to do that in Genius so that I don't
have to revise any other 'Type'?
Hi,
I just tried downloading Genius, and it seemed to download fine - but
refused to open at all. I tried numerous ways of opening, all futile.
When I then did a find & cleaned out all the Genius files (intending
to start over), there were crash reports, indicating it was crashing
on opening.
Ideas? Similar experiences?
Thanks

I also just started using Genius and agree wholeheartedly with both of
these simple suggestions. Displaying the "notes" during a quiz would
be extremely useful for making language cards that work in both
directions. If you put a bunch of helpful hints in the question (words
with multiple meanings, or to differentiate similar words for instance)
you create cards that are virtually impossible to use backwards. I've
been putting all the clever details in the "notes" field, and it would
be handy to have them able to be displayed as an option (although you'd
want them turned off for running backwards lest they make it too easy).
I find myself often sitting down for 3 or 4 sessions back-to-back. I
read through the website but didn't see any directions specifically
about usage -- is there some optimal amount of time between sessions,
optimal number of sessions per day, etc? If it's not strictly
important to only do 1 session per x hours or something I also think it
would be very handy to have another slider in the upper-left for
duration.
Finally, the info pane is missing a few options. How about being able
to change the importance and current score there to be consistent?
Great utility though! I'm using the Dutch deck from geniusfiles and
have already tripled it in length. When I get my whole set of paper
flash cards converted I'll be uploading it to give back to the
community.
Thanks for all the hard work that went into this program and best
regards,
David

Hi, I just downloaded genius (cause of boing boing article) and it seems cool.
I want to
refresh my multiplication tables (I haven't done math since high school). I went
to the genius
website and downloaded math_multiply1.genius.zip. I did catch two errors in
this file - it
told me 6 x 1 is 5 and it told me that 11 x 12 is 142. I just deleted those
entries. Thanks to
whoever posted this file, but you may have trouble with your 11 x 12s in future!
Just a
warning for others who may download this for their multiplication tables, and a
request - if
you run this and catch any other errors, please let me know. Cheers, Beth

hi,
I started using genius a few days ago, and thanks! that's what I've
been searching for months, it's really helpful to learn a language.
a few ideas though :
- it would be helpful to have the option to display the 'notes' window
content with the answer, sometimes you can remember a word but you
don't want to type all the details about its usage or pronunciation to
validate an answer, but it's still important to see the details at
each review.
think about all non-roman-alphabet language for example for which you
don't learn couples but often triplets : the character, the
romanization (as pronunciation), and then the translation
- the sessions seems really short to me, would it be hard to add a
preference to set the length or is this against the learning method ?
thanks
Now that the SDK is out are you looking at porting it?
Thanks,
Brad

It would be great if we could have a community of people uploading
lists they made, for things like SAT vocabulary, Biology Test,
whatever they have made.
Upload them onto a website?
Hi, I was wondering if anything was in the works for Genius for the iPhone, now
that the
SDK is available. Thanks so much.

Is there a way to add images into the listing?
I am learning Key card memory techniques and need to associate playing
cards with key codes.
Currently I spell out the name of the card but ideally, I should just
'see' the card' and instantly pair it with it's code word.
Is there any way to bold a character or use other fonts in Genius?
The reason I ask, is that I am using it to learn Russian vocabulary.
The problem is, Russian words are heavily dependent on stress.
The Cyrillic keyboard layout does not include characters with stress
marks, so I can't type them.
My alternative was going to be just bolding the stressed vowel.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a way to do this!
Any help would be appreciated.
Hi everyone,
I have been enjoying the fruits of Genius since December 2007 for a
spanish course I did. Well now I am in Japan and the learning of this
language is both hard to read and interpret through sound.
As I see a few people were already requesting the addition of sound, I
haven't seen much headway, so why not. I dont know any mac programming
till today, which I find awkward.
I did it.
Changes:
1) Changed the font numbers for the quiz windows for easier reading
2) Load and play sounds at runtime during quiz (no precaching)
3) Changed the file format to favour sound file sources. Here is the
new tab delimited format:
@"itemA.stringValue", @"itemB.stringValue", // 1, 2
@"itemA._speakableStringValue", @"itemB._speakableStringValue", // 3, 4
@"customGroupString", @"customTypeString", // 5, 6
@"associationAB.scoreNumber", @"associationBA.scoreNumber", // 7, 8
@"notesString", nil]; // 9, 10
4) by default I have chosen to set all entries to zero on import. This
is because scores never mattered to me after a session, and its always
easy to reset all items, but not to zero them out.
5) in the "About" I added __STAV__ to help you know which version you
are using as it is the latest 1.7 source code compiled.
While you may have to take a leap of faith to try software from an
unknown person, I can reveal all code modifications that have been
made and I hope the developer can incorporate them. I do however take
no responsibility for this programs actions.
Firstly I have compiled this on Macbook Pro Intel core duo running Mac
OSX Tiger 10.4. If there are ways for me to spit out a ppc version do
tell.
Instructions:
1) Download the program and bundled sample named JapaneseSTAV.zip
http://www.it.usyd.edu.au/~jstavrak/genius/
2) unzip the contents in your home directory such that you only have
the folder ~/Japanese with 6 mp3 files, one text file and the modified
Genius program inside.
3) Double click the Genius program icon to run the program.
4) Go to the "File" menu and choose "Import"
5) choose the file ~/Japanese/kanji_1-10.txt
6) by now you should see only 3 entries. in the main window. Take the
test and you will hear the question being played
WORKS? IF SO KEEP READING
7) you can switch the questions to answers but I didnt use english
one/two/three mp3s, instead youll be hearing other japanese numbers,
and dont bother trying to answer those long answers, this is just a test.
Customisation
To make your own questions simply export your existing Genius file to
text format. Insert the playback filenames for Question and Answer
respectively as described in point 3 above.
A note on filenames, you can have absolute filenames
/Users/john/spanish.thanks.mp3
use a tilde (preferred)
~/spanish/thanks.mp3
or make it relative the HOME directory ( i didnt know how to make it
relative to program soz)
spanish/thanks.mp3
Supported audio formats include many:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Reference/ApplicationKit/Classes/\
NSSound_Class/Reference/Reference.html
My own further requirements
1) I want to make the sound play more than once, but via a keyboard
command or a button. I dont want a timer based approach, so not sure
how to make this work.
2) I also wanted to make the audio directory changable via the menu,
but I dont understand how the columns work there. Its better off
leaving that to a text file as the find/replace is better for folder
relocation.
3) A problem I found was actually gathering the right audio files. and
then entering them in. I thought about a web based version where the
sound is downloaded and played, but then you have to be on the
internet, and need precaching to avoid lag. hmmm. There was an idea
floating around here to create a repository, this is a good idea, I
will upload something in good time.
Ultimately I want to utilise voice recognition/matchign to aid the
feedback loop. Problems include unwanted noise, bad mics, high
computation cost and more importantly matching the tonal pattern
sample with that of yours for verification. Without it you really do
need a tutor to tell you that your Japanese sux :P
Enjoy
and dont forget to share your data!

This program basically saves my life every day! I use it to study for
French and sometimes I have used it to study for chemistry. I was
wondering if:
a) Is there any way to use a sound file as the "question?" This would
be very helpful for French.
b) I was studying ions in chemistry and had to settle for writing
something like "CO3 2-" instead of being able to format it correctly
with superscript and subscript. If that isn't possible, maybe being
able to use a picture instead of a question or an answer could be
useful for things beyond this specific application.
Thanks for the help and thanks for a great program!
A "check for duplicates" would be really useful.
If would also be great if you could give more functionality to the grouping.
Allow users to "compile" information in a certain group using a flippy triangle.
Allow to order by group. Add an option for giving certain groups colors.
What about letting the percentage gauge at the bottom update depending on your
selection.
And making the gauge more useful - tell people how many times they've gone over
the
selection. Maybe let them set goals for how many times they want to study it and
let the
gauge track how close they are to their goal.
Tell people how long they've been studying something.
Just one more thing but I don't know how broad an audience this applies too:
alerts
reminding you to study on certain days. I have weekly tests I need to memorize.
I supposed i
could be doing it in ical/mail but it would be cool to get it from genius
itself.
Those are my suggestions, hope they were helpful. Thanks so much for the great
app!
Hi,
I really love your program, it is extremely useful. I ran into a bug however.
I'm using Genius 1.7(228) with Leopard, and when I run the Quiz, it will only
show me the
first line of the text for the question and the answer. The parts that are too
long are not
shown, and you have to click on the text and move the cursor right to expose all
of the
question or answer.
I don't know if the problem is with Leopard only, but I do have a laptop that
runs Tiger,
and I've been using Genius 1.7(20061227) with no problems.
I have a couple of suggestions for the next version to make this software even
better!
When you're in the Quiz mode, it would be really helpful if you can mark the
questions
that you think are important so you can look them over later when the quiz is
over.
Also, I make a lot of stupid and repetitive questions sometimes and won't notice
it until
I'm actually going over the quiz. It would be great to be able to delete them
during the
quiz.
Okay that's it. Thanks so much for making this program! I use it a lot! and
it's helping
me get through school.
I'm using version 1.7 to study my Arabic voab. I love the program, but I have a
weird
problem. My س
is getting changed into a ش
With the Arabic QWERTY settings that I'm using that corresponds to inputting a
lower case "s"
and getting a capital "S" instead. I input the character correctly, but at some
point, and I'm
not sure when, the letters get switched. I can correct it, I haven't noticed if
it goes back yet...
Anyway, any ideas on what's going on? I'm running 10.4 and version 1.7 of
genius, any help
would be appreciated!
Isaac
Version 1.7.196 added an automated update feature. So if you have an older
version of
genius, check out http://genius.sourceforge.net/ where you can download version
1.7.228.
Hi Jung,
BTW, do you not use the type field at all? The group field doesn't have the
field
completion, but the type field already does what you want.
The group field is conceived of as something similar to album, and the type is
something
like genre. In this case, it makes more sense to use the type field for what
you are doing.
Kinda like iTunes but without the same nomenclature. Type == genre ==
completion.
Group == Album == no completion.
Cheers,
Chris
