Can anybody tell me why does Gimp 1.0.x copy the palettes dir? The logical
way will be not to do so, and copy those palettes that are modified (same
name so user ones takes precedence, or different so you can access all
versions). Like plugins or patterns.
Thanks in advance.

If your eyes are really good, you'll probably notice the difference no
matter what you do. In JPEG the math is more important than the bits.
So, some images really do look better and store smaller as GIFs - usually
because they either have a lot of mostly-same color patches, they see
enough optimization from left-to-right GIF compression (and maybe speed
from top-to-bottom loading and interlacing), or something is so subtle in
the image that you're better off losing colors than image details.
In a GIF you can customize the palette, or even force the palette to your
selection. (I assume the destination is web; if not, maybe you should try
other file formats too.)
I'm not sure of the source of your JPEG, and whether you have been mixing
parts from multiple images together, so this may not apply to you. But,
when working with layered content, I seem to see better results when I
"merge visible layers" instead of flatten. So, ever since my experience
with that, I don't use flatten.
(Well, I used it once to get a weird effect. But never mind that.)
When my destination is GIF or JPEG, I -always- save the XCF I got started
in. It contains a lot more information than either of these formats, and
if my client doesn't like the results, I can go back and modify the
offending layer(s) easily, index using another palette, try to get the
"same" effect using slightly different features, etc.

When you save an image as a jpeg in the gimp, the options box gives you a
place where you can choose the compression percentage from 0 to 100 (zero
is totally compressed and 100 is uncompressed - different graphics programs
approach this in different ways - in another program I have, this would be
backwards). In gimp, I usually get a pretty good result by setting it to
around 85 - not too much loss of quality while still getting a decent file
size. Another thing to remember is that jpegs lose quality each time they
are edited and resaved, so you only want to save as a jpeg when you are
certain you're finished editing the picture. Also, jpegs have a tendency to
look bad if you have large areas of solid color. If you still have your
original image that still looks good, try making copies of it and saving it
at several different compression levels between around 70 to 100 and see
what happens.

JPEG compression is based on getting rid of some information your eye
might not see. That's why you get worse quality.
PNG or Tiff might be a better suggestion, depending on what you are
going to do with the images.

Hi,
i have a problem with the jpeg format. When i save an image in this
format, after make a flatten image, the quality of the image is not the
same that the original image, even i choose quality one. The color

I have just installed Redhat 5.2, including Gimp "out of the box".
When I start up Gimp, I get a bunch of messages:
"file gtkpreview.c line 563 gtk_preview_draw_row
preview_class -> info.visual != NULL"
As I said, it's "out of the box" so no configuration has been done.
Can't find any logs or additional diagnostics. Looks to me like
something is missing but gtk is there according to glint.
Anyone got any ideas where to look for the answer.
Cheers,
Cliff

I need some help. TheGimp.com is short an Artist of the Month this month.
I contacted a couple of people but their schedules just didn't give them
time to work on the required info (which really isn't that much). I had
hoped to have this months issue up by today, but thats not going to happen
now. If I can't find someone quick, I'm stuck showcasing my own work again
- and I already did that just 2 months ago.
So, does anyone know someone (including yourself) who would be interested
in being this months Artist of the Month? The basic requiremenst are:
1. 1 small image for the main page, with a full size version linked from
there (I'm willing to drop the large version, or just make the small
version myself if you can't/don't know how/etc).
2. A description of the processes you go through to make your images,
preferrably the one you went through to make this particular image.
3. A description of your hardware configuration.
You can look at the current issues artist, Johnny Taporg, for an example of the
info I need.
One additional requirement this month: I need this info by tonight (friday
night, USA), or I'm going to have to spend the weekend coming up with another
image of my own.
If you want to nominate someone else, I need a URL to see samples of their
artwork and a working email address (I got several nominations previously that
had no valid email - so couldn't contact the artist). If you want to
nominate yourself I need an URL of your artwork. Please don't send artwork
just yet - I only have a 33.6 modem!
BTW, this upcoming issue has a sneak peak at the status of the 1.2 release,
a tutorial on making your friends into aliens, and a slew of tip
comparisons between Photoshop and the Gimp. Plus a spotlight on some lucky
artist! :-)

The TIFF and XPM librarys are not a part of the gimp distribution. You
should look at the configure output. If configure doesnt find the
appropriate librarys, the plugins for TIFF and XPM will not be build.
There are no explicite error messages at the compile process.

Hello Jim,
If I am not mistaken the first use of morphing (warping) was precisely that.
I think They added depth information on all morphpoints on the grid.
which gives you more or less a 3D model, and then giving it an other angle
is easy( You rotate your 3D grid, project it again and morph).
but since most morphing tools don't handle additional info like that ,
you to do the modifications on the grid yourself.
But if you dont mind the manual work,I think it could be a quick fix.

Hello all...
I have been asked a question I sort of know the answer to but cannot make
work. Someone wondered if a picture of a server taken at a slight angle
could be rotated to get a straight on shot. There are so many parallel
lines that are in the wrong place that I cannot get it right. I tried just
cropping the stuff I don't want, but that still isn't quite right. When I
use the perspective tool, I get a ton of smear and cannot get the
parallelogram right. Is there a way to do this that yields more
staisfactory results? All wrongs and no rights make me exasperated.
I have the image if someone would likme to take a crack at it.

I just installed gimp-1.0.4 and gtk-1.2 on Solaris 5.6.
When I try to open a .xpm or .tif file I get an open error dialog. I
can read a .gif file however.
I can also open the same .tif files in XV but not the .xpm files. I
received no compiliation errors when compiling gimp so I assume the tif
and xpm libraries were built and installed correctly as part of the gimp
packages. Also how do I install the patch-1.0.3-1.0.4 patch and where do
the fonts go?

I *did* say this. I even conjectured why.

I could see it being real handy during presentations setup, get your box
up fast so that your audience sees color and knows they're in the right
place.... and leave the pointer gadget unplugged until you're actually
ready to roll, so nobody can screw it up.

Oh well. I was kind of hoping those tab dialogs were something like Fvwm's
"swallowed" objects, that maybe they could be unswallowed.
I love gradients, gradients are my friend :) By mixing and matching gradient
on different layers, you can get really impressive "painting like" perspective
which is quite unlike real perspective.

greetings and salutations...
i am having a somewhat frustrating problem-
whenever i open a new window (including the main window when i run
gimp), it shows up minimized (iconified?). i had this happen before with
gimp 1.1.?, and kde 1.0, but when i un-installed 1.1.? and reinstalled
1.0.2, the problem went away... thusly, i assumed that it was related to
the 1.1.x versions.
i am running gimp 1.0.4 (the only big difference i remember noticing is
the tile-based hooah), and kde 1.1
i sure would love to fix this problems, since (as i am sure you can
imagine) having every filter, tool, etc. window minimized to start with
gets tiresome pretty fast during any serious project.

Actually, the success/failure of the X server to start based on the
availability of a pointing device is pretty much X server dependent. Xi
Graphics server, for example, will start if it doesn't see a mouse. This
is useful for applications that use keyboard interfaces only (like some
kiosks implementations).

Not without reprogramming the interface. The size of the prefs box is not
a preference option. :-)
