Hi,

For the past year, I have been involved with a FD/EMS GIS User Group formulated
through ESRI. Approximately 4 months ago, it was decided to have a 2 day
seminar regarding GIS in FD/EMS. I have been one of the members organizing this
seminar. The first day of the seminar is going to be in Burlington County, NJ
hosted by Chief Greg Collier (Mount Laurel Fire Department) and the second day
is going to be at the FDNY Headquarters.

Currently we have planned presentations by:
FDNY GIS Operations - Myself
GIS with a Type 3 Incident Management Team - Sarah Lerly (Montgomery, MD FD) and
Eric Fisher (Fairfax County, VA FD)
Implementation of CAD System - Eric Fisher (Fairfax County, VA FD)
Power Failure - Peter Hanna and Jim Potteiger (Baltimore City, MD FD)
Deploying GIS Data - Keith Silverman and Todd Brown

Representatives from the NFPA, Boston FD, Philadelphia FD will be attending.

The reason I am contacting you is that I would like to officially invite you to
the seminar. The seminar is going to be held on 11/19/09 and 11/20/09. I think
that it will be interesting seminar and a good networking opportunity for GIS
Users within FD/EMS organizations.

If you are interested in attending you can register at the Public Safety GIS web
page at http://www.publicsafetygis.org/events/user-meetings.html.

I apologize for any cross postings. If you having any further questions, please
feel free to contact me. Hopefully you will be able to attend.

Seems the solution to my problem was quite simple. The hyperlinks in the DOiTT
metadata were not broken... I just needed to allow my web browser to run active
content, also known as ActiveX controls. Duh on my part. Thanks to Yitzchok
Friedman from DOiTT for a timely solution to my problem and also to Michele
McInnes from City Planning for sending me the metadata via cut-n-paste. Michele
also passed along a separate link with some generalized metadata for the DOiTT
data. Much appreciated. -James

http://www.nyc.gov/html/doitt/html/eservices/eservices_gis_metadata.shtml

***ORIGINAL QUESTION***

Hello:

I'm sure many of you have noticed that DOiTT recently updated the list of GIS
datasets you can download. Included with each shapefile download is an .htm file
that is suppose to be the metadata for each dataset. However, .htm files don't
offer much in the way of metadata and seem broken... when opened you can not use
the hyper-links to access the other categories of information such as 'Spatial'
and 'Attribute' information.

I have two questions. One, does anyone have accurate metadata for these for
these layers? And two, does anyone know what the values in the FEATURE_CO and
SUB_FEATUR fields of the OPEN_SPACE shapefile represent?

I of course will also be emailing DOiTT to ask about the broken metadata files,
but thought I'd get a faster reply for group users.

Thanks,
James

GISMO Listserv Guidelines

The following topics are covered in this message:

1. What is Virtual GISMO?
2. What is the GISMONYC listserv?
3. How do I subscribe to GISMONYC?
4. How do I post a message to GISMONYC?
5. What types of messages can I post?
6. How are messages stored?
7. How do I reply to posted messages?
8. How do I change my email address?
9. What do I do if I want access to the GISMONYC site, but
I don't want all that email?
10. How do I unsubscribe from GISMONYC?
11. Questions?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

1. What is Virtual GISMO?

Virtual GISMO is a subgroup of GISMO devoted to facilitating the online
communications of the group, via a web site
(http://www.geo.hunter.cuny.edu/gismo), and a suite of online communication
tools located at Yahoo! Groups (http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/gismonyc).
The web site includes information about GISMO meetings, functioning and
policies, subgroups, contacts and archives and acts as the main portal for the
communication tools. The Yahoo! Groups site contains an interactive calendar,
listserv/bulletin board, polling tool, member directory, links and file
archives. As of the September 1999 issue, the GISMO newsletter is also being
stored at the Yahoo! Groups site. Each of these tools is linked from within the
GISMO site for easier navigation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

2. What is the GISMO listserv?

The GISMONYC listserv is GISMO's most active communication tool, and is located
at Yahoo! Groups: http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/gismonyc. The listserv is
a moderated email list that allows members to send email messages to the entire
group using a single address. Messages can be read on the web site by anyone,
regardless of whether they are a member of GISMO, but you must be a registered
member of GISMONYC to post or receive messages in your email box. Other content
on the Yahoo! Groups site, such as the file vault and member directory, is not
viewable by the general public.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

3. How do I subscribe to GISMONYC?

To subscribe to the GISMONYC, you must be a GISMO member. Either you have
attended at least one GISMO meeting and have filled out a member form or you
mailed a form and submitted a personal paragraph. New members are added to the
list after each meeting as the database is updated. If you do not receive an
email invitation to join the listserv, you may subscribe by sending a blank
message to:

gismonyc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Once your GISMO membership is verified, you will be added to the list.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

4. How do I post a message to the GISMONYC?

To post a message to the GISMO listserv, you can either send an email to:

gismonyc@yahoogroups.com

or, use the online form located at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gismonyc/post

While you do not need to be registered with Yahoo! to post or receive GISMONYC
messages via email, if you wish to use the online form to post a message, or to
review any other members-only areas of the site, such as Files, Polls and
Databases, you must be logged into Yahoo! Groups with a Yahoo! ID. To create a
Yahoo! ID, visit http://edit.yahoo.com/config/eval_register.

Once your message is approved by the listserv administrator, it will be sent to
all members of the group and stored in a searchable Bulletin Board archive at:

http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/gismonyc/messages

-----------------------------------------------------------------

  5. What types of messages can be posted?

The list is moderated to ensure that messages are appropriate to GISMO
interests. Feel free to post any message on GIS and mapping related topics,
including upcoming events, reviews, commentaries, etc.  Ideas are not censored;
however, personal, off-topic and overtly commercial messages will not be
approved. The administrator will usually notify you if a message is not
approved, or to verify whether a message of a personal nature was intended to be
sent to the group.

The only exception to the no advertising rule is that Yahoo! Groups, our site
host, requires discreet advertising at the end of each emailed message. (Not so
discreet on the site, but that is the price of a free site).

Meeting minutes and articles of interest to GISMO members are periodically
posted to the listserv. If you have written a piece that you believe is
appropriate for archiving on GISMONYC, please forward a message to
gismonyc-owner@yahoogroups.com, copying Jack Eichenbaum at jaconet@....
This way, we can review the content of the essay, and proof and format it before
it is saved in the File folders and forwarded on to the group.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

6. How are messages stored?

Messages and replies are archived by on the Yahoo! Groups site at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gismonyc/messages. Messages can be viewed either
by date or by thread.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

7. How do I reply to posted messages?

The listserv is moderated by the listserv administrator. If you believe your
reply is of interest to the entire group, feel free to respond directly to the
listserv address. Otherwise, reply just to the original sender. Refer to your
email program's "Reply" and "Reply To" functions to determine the best way to
send your reply.

Please remember, however, that when you reply to the listserv, the reply will be
sent to over 400 people! If the reply is intended only for a specific
individual, please delete the listserv address in the To: field and type in the
individual's address before sending. Messages that are obviously intended for
the sender and not the entire group will be forwarded to the original poster and
marked "Ignore" by the listserv administrator.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

8. How do I change my email address?

Please send any email address changes to the listserv owner at
gismonyc-owner@yahoogroups.com, including your name, old email address and new
email address, so that we can verify the change against the GISMO member
database. Please note that if you are changing your email address, do not just
send a message to gismonyc-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Your identity as a GISMO
member may be unknown, and the list owner will have to contact you anyway for
your name and old email.

You may also update your email and other information via your Yahoo! member
profile by visiting this address:
http://edit.yahoo.com/config/eval_profile?.intl=us&.done=http://groups.yahoo.com\
. Enter your password to access your profile. Please note that the Yahoo!
database is maintained separately from the GISMO member database. Therefore, if
you update your email address at Yahoo!, you will also need to forward the
change to gismonyc-owner@yahoogroups.com so the change can be reflected
appropriately in the database.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

9. What do I do if I want access to the GISMONYC site, but
I don't want all that email?

Yahoo! Groups has a function that allows you to select the type of email
delivery you prefer: every email to your box, digest mode, or no email. To set
your preferences, go to the "Edit My Membership" section of the site at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gismonyc/join to update these settings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

10. How do I unsubscribe?

To unsubscribe to the listserv, please send a message to:

gismonyc-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

Please note that if you unsubscribe, you will lose access to the member
directory and other featured areas on Yahoo! Groups.

If you cancel your membership with GISMO or GISMONYC, your email will be removed
from the Yahoo! Groups list.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

11. Questions?

Please refer any questions about the listserv or the Yahoo! Groups site to:

Greetings All –

The Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) software company ESRI has partnered with National Geographic to recruit GIS professionals to mentor students.  When you look at the Map, several folks have volunteered in NY, but no one has volunteered as of Nov. 5 in NYC.   Please see the information from NGS below for additional information and use the www.GeoMentor.org website to sign up for the program.  See below for more information.

 1.  GEOMENTORS! - Volunteers Ready! A New Force to Inspire Geographic Learning

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volunteers Ready! Let GeoMentors Help Students See the World in New Ways

Hundreds of professionals have stepped forward, through the new GeoMentor Program from National Geographic and ESRI, to help students better understand their world. These volunteers are ready to share insights into the importance of geography and the geo-technologies increasingly used in the workplace for analysis and problem-solving. Each GeoMentor has registered through www.GeoMentor.org and is ready to connect with a classroom or afterschool educator to determine how they can help enrich students’ learning.

Educators who work with students in grades K-16 are invited to sign up to locate a GeoMentor who can help with projects and programs. The GeoMentor Program site has a database and map feature that enables educators to browse for potential GeoMentor volunteers who have expressed interest in helping different age groups with a variety of opportunities. These range from hands-on activities teaching fundamental geography skills from National Geographic to activities using geo-technologies online, with GPS units, and more from ESRI.

With Geography Awareness Week and GISDay coming up the third week of November, now is a great time to contact a volunteer from your local area or at a distance who can inspire students to learn more about how geo-tools and insights are changing how we tackle and solve problems from local to global scales.

To sign up today, go to www.Geomentor.org!

I've been a member of your esteemed group for quite some time, I believe it is

I have around 10 years experience using ESRI products, and a strong background
in programming and graphic design.
I haven't had much luck with the usualy job search sites (Dice, Indeed, Monster,
etc), so I thought I'd post my resume here, to see if I can get a bite.
Thank you all.

Hi,

For the past year, I have been involved with a FD/EMS GIS User Group formulated
through ESRI. Approximately 4 months ago, it was decided to have a 2 day seminar
regarding GIS in FD/EMS. I have been one of the members organizing this seminar.
The first day of the seminar is going to be in Burlington County, NJ hosted by
Chief Greg Collier (Mount Laurel Fire Department) and the second day is going to
be at the FDNY Headquarters.

Dore- while I abdicated czarship four years ago you know I am still interested in the continuation of GISMO. Its the only child I ever had.  I plan to be in Colombia from mid January to mid February. If possible can you begin the regrouping process as early in January as possible? Twentieth anniversary, BTW, is in May.

Thank you for your send but I must point out that it does not clearly state that there is no meeting.

Hello GISMO friends,

Many of you know about Green Map System, a locally-led global movement
that has been supported in many ways by the GISMO community over the
years. Many of you have enjoyed the printed and interactive NYC Green
Maps we have created and distributed free since 1992, used our
mapmaking resources with classrooms and community groups, or taken
part in our tours, exhibits and parties.

Today, our movement is growing faster than ever! In addition to our
local projects, Green Mapmakers in 55 countries are charting new
directions to a sustainable future. Thanks to the hundreds of Green
Maps published worldwide, millions have a fresh green perspective of
home and are guided to better choices for lower impact, higher quality
everyday living.

Now, we need your help:

In November, we are taking part in a 50% donation matching challenge.

Your $10 donation is worth $15 to us, plus you will help us win cash

Hi, Folks-

Jack Eichenbaum recently had a note from Tom Hibbard:

"You may remember me as showing up from time to time at the GISMO meetings. I
had the pipe dream of creating a map of street parking for Manhattan and a
couple times asked you for possible friendly contacts at the DOT (not too many
when it comes to parking signs). Well, I have finished the first edition of the
map and installed it (with some nifty layer controls) on a web site:
parallelspaces.com. I hope you can take a look sometime.

Over the years I have dropped in on the GISMO meetings and always appreciated
the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism there, and some of the contacts you
have given me helped me in my very drawn out FOIL Requests, so I would be happy
to share this map and its unusual symbols at a meeting some time."

Those of us working behind the scenes to get GISMO back in gear fully intend to
invite Tom in as a speaker in the not too distant future.

In the meantime I want to share couple of links I'm sure many of you are already
well aware of (I'm in "belts & suspenders" mode here):

All best to all of you & yours for the upcoming holidays. ~dorothy

This came to my office email, is there anyone on the list who can jump in and assist and/or respond.

Thanks,

Ken Reid
Greetings Mr. Reid:

I am writing to explore the possibility of arranging a visit for a Chinese delegation to GISMO next month.

The delegation consists of 18 professionals providing mapping and surveying services to Hubei province, China (please see the delegation name list in the email attachment).  They will be in the US for a training program on geographic information system (GIS) in December and their last stop will be New York.

The training program is to support the province’s plan to build “Digital Hubei,” a plan inspired by the concept of “Digital Earth.”  One of the important objectives of the plan is to improve functionality and availability of geocoded data for public use, such as construction, emergency management, city planning, and environmental protection.

We are wondering whether the delegation can meet with you or colleagues from GISMO to discuss the use of mini – or –micro-based geographic information systems.  It seems that mini – or –micro-based geographic information systems provide more options for costs, functionality, ease of use, future stability, development potential, support availability, and maintenance costs – all of which is very important to “Digital Hubei” project.

The proposed date of the visit will be 12/18 (Friday), the visit will be maximum 2 hours.  We will provide an interpreter for the visit.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at (626) 579-6980 if you have any questions.  Thank you very much for your kind consideration of our request and wish you a very happy Thanksgiving holiday!

Sincerely,
